The Clemson College.
An important meeting of the execu
tive committee of the Board of Trustees
of the Clemson Agricultural College
was held at Pen die ton, Tuesday. All
the members of the committee were
present, as follows : Col R. W. Simp
son, Col. Jas L. Orr. Col. D K. Nor
ris, Col. K. ?. Bowen and Allan John
stone.
Colonel Orr returned to the city yes
terday, and in response to inquiries
gave a reporter for The Daily News a
full statement of the business transacted
by the committee
The executive committee was called
together to consider and decide opon
pians for the buildings for the new
institution to be erected at Fort Hill by
the State's munificence. The prepara
tion of these plane bad been entrusted
to Brace & Morgan, a well known firm
of Atlanta architects. Mr. Bruce, the
senior member of the firm, was present
at the meeting at Peodletoo, and sub
mitted to the committee a series of
plans for their inspection. No one set
of these designs was chosen, but the
committee made up from all the plane
submitted one set which they conceive
to embody the best points of ail, and
which they will recommend to the Trus
tees for adoption. The p?aos selected
comprehend, it is believed, all the
buildings that will be needed to start
the institution and furnish it ample ac
commodations for years to come.
The committee's plaos contemplate
the erection of six college buildings sod
ten professors' bouses. Of the eslege
buildings proper, attention will be
chiefly devoted to the main building.
This will be an imposing structure of
modem and artistic design, embodying
alt the latest achievements in the con
struction of school buildings It will
be built of brick, three 6tories high,
90 feet wide by 112 feet in length.
The building will contain twelve lecture
rooms, two society rooms and a muse
um, together with offices for the presi
dent and the treasurer Attached to
ths main building will be a chapel
measuring fifty by seventy-five feet.
Next in importance wilt be the libra
ry and mechanical department buitdiog.
The laboratory will be a two story
stricture, fifty feet wide and eighty feet
lotg. It will be modeled after the
most approved German laboratories aod
wiil be complete io every appointaient.
The building for the accommodation of
the department of mechanical work will
be iwo stories high, and 40 by 100 feet
dimensions. Both these straetares,
as well as all the othercsHege buildings,
will be built of brick.
The buildings for dormitory purposes
wit! be two io aottfeer and wiU furnish
accommod?t iocs for 150 students.
The buildings wiU be two atones high,
and 38 feet wide by 120 feet long.

four ?od teo rooms each, of modern
tyles of architecture.
The total cost of all these buildings,
as estimated by the committee, will be
$100 000.
It has bee? tound that a very large
part of ?be material needed io the con
stroctioo of the buildings can be obtaind
on the spot, on the Clemsnn property,
thereby materially cheapening the cost
of b'liidiog. The clay on the place has
been tested by an expert and found to
be excellent brick clay. Since there
ia an abundance of this clay on the farm,
ail the brick for the buildings will be
made there. Examination bas also
develop* d on the place an abundant
supply of good building granite, which
will be used io the foundations. It is
probable that the gretti r part of the
lumber osed to the buildings will be
obtained from the same source, there
being an abundance of timber on the
property.
The architects will proceed at once to
prepare the details and elevations of the
plans decided oo by the executive com
mittee. As perfected they will be sub
mitted to a meeting of the full board of
the college trustees to be called as soon
as the decision in the Clemson will case,
now pending before the United States
Supreme Court, is announced. The de
cision will probably be received within
three or four weeks, at the latest, aod
a* soon thereafter as convenient the
trustees will meet, adopt the plans and
order the beginning of the actual work

After their session at Pendleton,
Tuesday, the committee visited Fort
Hill and located the sites for the college

grouped, will occupy the smooth plateau
directly in front of the stately old man- ;

yards diatant from it The spot is the
high 8^ point for some distance around,
aod the ground slopes away from it
gradually in every direction, making j

picturesque, a broad campus sloping j
away in front of the site of the buildings I

Ills Master's Jest.
Entertaining are some angelotes told
of Gonella, jester to Borso, Luke of For
rara, in the Fifteenth century. As (mo
nella was on his way to mass, three blind
beggars implored an alms of him. "Hero
is a florin for you," said the jester; "di
vide it among you." He gave nothiug.
and passed on. The beggars invoked
blessings on him, each supposing that
one of his fellows was in possession of
the coin. When they wished to divide
the gift, not one of thena would allow
that he held it, and they mutually ac
cused each other of .cheating, and from
words proceeded to blows. Gonella
watched the fray with great complacen
cy, and, when the beggars were all
bruised and bleeding, he went on to
church with a clear and calm conscience.
The Duke of Ferrara fell ill, and the doc
tors declared that only a sudden fright
would restore him to health. lie was
too great a man for any one to play
tricks on, except his fooL ?oneila was
with him in a boat, and cleverly pushed
the duke into the water. Aid had been
previously provided, and the prince was
drawn ashore and put to bed.
The fright and the bath and the bed
cured the invalid, but he was so enraged
with Gonella that he exiled the man who
was both a fool and a physician. Go
neiia returned in a cart filled with Pa
duan soil; an evasion of the edict of ban
ishment said to have been practiced by
many a jester. The duke ordered him
to be beheaded, but saying privately
that he would only repay fright with
fright, he directed the executioner not
to use the ax, but to let fall a single
drop of blood on the culprit's neck. Go
nella was led to the scaffold: all the
usual gloomy preparations were made.
He was blindfolded and made to lay his |
head on the block. The executioner. |

laughter, the jester, silent now, was bid
