Congratulating you on the great suc?
cess of your enterprise.
Yours very truly,
A.vE?O.CAS AGRICULTURIST
The following i xtract made from
an editorial which will appear in the j
february number of the American Ag-j
riculturt?t :
**The gran? prize of $500 in gold j
will be awarded to Zachariah Jordan I
Drake, of Marlborough Couoty, S. 0 j
Ile will also receive a similar prise from ?
the South Carol-J- Department cf ?gri- j
culture, as this soterprising body offered j
to duplicate our prize if it was takec in
that State.
Mr. Drake's crop oj corn op thc ear ',
from the exact contest acre weighed
17,4(87 pounds. The average of three f
tests, by as many wimesses, was that i
oue hundred pounds of this corn con- j
fained ouly eighteen pounds of cobs, ;
consequently the gross weight named j
contained 44,273? poui;ds of shelled
corn. A ^fifty-six pounds to the bushel '

analyses made at the South Carolina ;
Experiment Statioa by Drs. W. i>. Bur- j
nej and J- B. McBryde, under the j
supervision of the director, Prof. J. M. j
McBryde,.this crop was remark ?bly j
dry, as were ali the corn crops in South j
CaY?T?na. The shelled corn contained ,
only 15 per cent, of water. We 2nd.
therefore, that the 255 bushels of shelled j
corn contained 217 bushels of actual ,
dry matter ia the kernels without any ;
water whatever. Oa the basis of 10 J
per cent, water for thoroughly crib- f
cured old corn. or.kiln dried corn, the ?
yield was 239 bushels of shelled cora, j
The second largest crop wa? grown ;
by Alfred Kose, latu County, N?w
York His yield was I5.S7S pounds :
of corn in the ear, averaging 20 per |
cent. cob. or 213 bu^hcU of shelled
cora green wight, 101 bushels crib ?
cured, aod i/4 bushels of actual dry I
matter.
The third largest crop was grown by
George Gartner. Pawnee Countv, Ne?
braska, his gr>s? weight of corn os the
ear being 11.380 pounds. U averaged I
only 10 per cent cob, or 171 bu.-Le?s ,
green wright. 151 bushels crib cared I
and 127 bushels dry matter. !
These crops break the world's reeord
The largest yield previously recorded
was 200 bushels shelled corn, green
weight, alleged to have been grown by 1
Dr J. W. Parker, not kr fron? Coi- j
ombia. South Carolina, in 1857, atid !
its accuracy has been questioned. But j
there is no d< not as to the compete i
honesty of theso crops in the American :
Agriculturist prize crop competition.
Judgment should be suspended by the j
unbelieving anti! they read in the Ag- 1
ricuiturist for March how these un prece- !

cactions taken to secure abi-olute hou
esty and faithful accuracy.

We may aid also that thc superb !
showing made hy South Carolina will
not be dimmed by the complete record .
of the content corn crop. She ha* j
shown what can be accomplished in the ?
agriculture of the BOW S<>urh S<>uth '
Carolina's enterprise will not only be j
rewarded many thousand fold, but she j
has encouraged ber farmers, to make j
