Cotton Seed-A Suggestion to
the Alliance.
It is stated that the cotton seed oil
mil! combination has become an incor?
poration, aud tts capital stock has been
increased to ?^2,000.000. A charter
was obtained from the Legislature of
New Jersey last winter, aud the legal
requirements necessary to put the cor?
poration into working order have just
been complied with. The cotton seed
oil combination is therefore a New
Jersey corporation, abd the impression
is that its purpose ts to carry on a much
larger business than ever before.
This corporation has mills in nearly
all the Southern States, and the pur?
pose of the incorporation-as was that
of the previous combination-is to con?
trol the price of oil, aud also of cotton
seed.
Whether the milli1 make money or
not is a somewhat disputed question ;
but being now one company, they can
dictate prices for cotton seed, aud also
for cotton seed products. The demand
for cotton seed products is steadily in?
creasing, and it would seem as if the
price of cotton seed, under these cir?
cumstances, would improve. The cot?
ton seed oil corporation, however, will
give no more for cotton seed than it
bas to, and it will exact all it can for
the oil and meal.
Now here is something for the Far?
mers' Alliances to tackle. Thus far
they seem to have paid very little at?
tention to this matter. They have
been so engrossed with the impractica?
ble and unprofitable direction of the [
fight against the jute men, that they
have paid no atteution to the greatly
more powerful and haruiful enemy
that has been and is steadily grasping
the products of the farms.
The seed from the cotton crop of
last year, at the av?rage price of 15
cents per bushel, was worth ?31,500,
000. In the South-west where the
large oil mills are located, the seed
was bought at V2}, cents per bushel,
while in this State it fetched about 18
cents. This fali the prices are some?
what h-igher, and will average about
17 cents. In Aikeu County the agents
of the mills are offering 20 cents, and
wc have seen it 6tated that in Abbe
ville County they are payiDg as high
as 26 cents.
Now it may be accepted as as fact,
that jus? as the jute men will get all they
can for their bagging, so the oil mill
will pay as little as they can for the
seed. One of the objects of their com?
bination is to keep down the price of
seed. It has been repeatedly demon?
strated by chemical aufclysis that the
seed is worth to the farmer for manure
at least 28 cents per bushel, and when?
ever he sells for a lower price he throws
away his substance ; and therefore at
the average price throughout the South
of about 17 cents, which the mills are
now paying, the farmers are being im?
posed imposed upon to the exteut of li
cents on every bushel sold. In com?
parison with the amount of money lost
iu this way, the exactions of the jute
men are trifling.
Now this is something for the far?
mers to tike hold of at once, and with
profit to themselves. If they, through
their combination, firmly demand 28
cents for their cotton seed, they will
get it. We are not discussing the
advisability of a farmer's selling his
cotton seed, but are dealing with the
fact that maDy farmers do sell their
seed, and these should get its full j
value,-and can get it if they will only J
act together firmly.-Aiken Recorder.
