T?e Biggest Acre of Corn.
A. Bl. Porcher, of Berkeley County,
writes as follows to the Xeics- and* Char?
rier: I have been expecting to hear
some one correct the statement circu?
lated qaite fre<jaently in t-bc public
prints that Dr. Parker's-crop of ?oro
(raised on oue- acre), was- greater than
ever raised on oue acre.
On the fifth page of the January,
?876 number of the Southern Cultiva?
tor, M*. W. 7u Joues, editor, refers
specially to an acre of corn raised by
Mr. ?. Turoley in 1875. It was
measured by a committee of three, ap?
pointed by Gravely Springs Grange,
&>. 5^0, Graveley Springs, Lauderdale
County, Alabama. The yield of the
acre was 221 bushel's and 7 quart's.
Mr. Jones refers te- the fact of t??e
.yield exceeding that of Br. Parker's
acre (Columbia, S. C ,) by twenty-oue
bushels. Turoley planted three by
three, three stalks left in a bill. Seed
planted carefully selected nnd very pro?
ductive. I happened myself to have
seen Dr. Parker's.celebrated acre of
eora just before it was harvested.
I send this item, havia? a copy ef
1876 number of tbe Southern Cultiva?
tor, The truth- has always some inter?
est. Tbe contestants will have to aim
big ber tba* that of Dr. Parker's re
?or?.
Turoley lays stress on hie very pro?
ductive seed coro, which bad been a
specialty with him.
Harrison's Sooth Carolina
Sheriff.
Many amusing incidents OCCUT in
eoooectiou with the importunities of
office-seekers. Oue of the funniest
occurred yesterday. **Where do you
reckon 1 can Sud Joba Sherman ?"
- said a tall-, typical Southerner, addres?
sing himself to a reporter in the Senate
chamber. "I want to talk to bini
" awhile," and the stranger stroked his
sandy gray mustache and drew his
fingers through bis long goatee. **My
Dame is Tolbert," be continued, John
S Tolbert, and I came from Abbeville
county, South Carolina, from the very
county where John C. Calhoun was
born, and where George C. McDaffie
came from-a grand place. D'ye
? think Butler and Hampton have gone
borne ? Sorry if they are. Butler's
my old Captain. I was a rebel, yon
know, bat there's no better Republican
anywhere than I am now. Where did
yon say Sherman's room was ? I want
to talk to bim. I voted eight times for
bim at Chicago last year. What of?ce
am I after ? Young mao, I am going
to be United States Marshal of South
Carolina-President Harrison's Sheriff
-or I am going to stay here until my
beard gets so long that I can step on it
without bending over*. Ye hear that?"
Tbe reporter beard it, aod that is the
way it got into the newspapers.

~ Crimes North and South.
lt is a singular fact that from the
average Northern stand point lawless?
ness occurring ip the .West and North
west is never attributed to party spirit
or to party influence. Murders, lynch?
ings, mob law, terrorism and every con?
ceivable form of outlawry tn the West?
ern and Northwesters States and Ter?
ritories are complacently set down as
wild westernism, the natural outgrowth
of a new and semi barbarous society,
which excuses are always nt hand for
foch manifestations of disorder and
crime. Tbe country in which they
occur is nearly always spoken of as
.'new" and '"tough." Better things
are looked for by and by, when society
shall have been fully organized and law
fchall bave been established in all its
strength. The region of Arkansas in
which Clayton was killed rs. in the
same sense, *'newT' and "tough." Some
of its people are uot unlike the Western
desperado. The shot-gun and the
revolver settle most of the disputes
there, as they do in many sections of
Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado
and Idaho. Crime in that section of
Arkansas is no more Democratic than
crime in some of the Northwestern
Territories named as Republican.
Efforts to prove to the contrary will not
be a access fal-Chicago Herald.
Electric Lights Assared.
In conversation with Mr. Campbell,
"the representative of the Brush Electric
Light, on Tuesday, we learned that
eoe-half of the capital stock pf the pro?

the remainder is assured. The capita!
ptock will be eight or nine thousand
dollars, which will guarantee a plant
which will be able to supply ail the
fights necessary. This is another evi?
dence of the energy and enterprise of
our citizens.- York Enterprise.

The New Bagging Deal*.
The latest io regard ?o the new deal
of tb? cfotton bagging combination is
that, it will control the supply of bag?
ging for the coming crop quite as
effectively as did thc combination of
last year, though Dot at such high
prices.
Thc coming cotton crop is likely to
[ demand from 45,003,000 to 50,000,.
I 000 yards of badging as covering. As
I the old combination bas 10,000,000
j yards on hand, it is obviously necessary
j that some artificial restraint should be
j placed upon production to "prevent the
j market frsm being swamped with bag
I ging. The Bostou Commercial Bul
lethir which gave the first information
ia regard to the new combination,,
says :
At present the agents of the deal are
? working upon the Southern dealers
urging them to purchase at the present
price, 9Jc free on beard io New York,
asiog as a lever the threatened advance
io prices. It is likely that wheo the
15.000,000 yards have beeo marketed,
possibly before, that the price may be
marked op to ten cents a yard for two
pound- bagging. Thc price is not likely
to be above this ?gure, as twelve cents,
last year's price, led to so general a use
of substitutes.- Wilmington Star.

Wonderful Dreaming or
Fearful Lying.
Some weeks ago the New York Eve?
ning World opened a dream contest,,
with Julian Hawthorne as judge.
Dreamers from many quarters sent into
the office the results of their slumbers,
and all were read and critically passed
on by Judge Eawtboroe, who to-day
I announces that the most remarkable
dreamer is Mr. J. E. J. Buckey, of
Cumberland. Md. The Marylander
received ?20 for his remarkable work
while asleep. The following is Mr.
Berkley's a-cctmnt of his prize-winning
?dream: **I dreamed one night last
summer that I met a man of small
stature, dark complexion, black hair,
aod heavy black moustache, fashionably
dressed, on the corner of Centre and
Baltimore streets in this city. Some
quarrel arose, and ? shot him in the
neck. Some oF h?3 blood spurted oo
j my white vest. The oext morning
j about 10 o'clock, as I was turning the
. corning the corner above mentioned, I
j met the dream man. He sprang back
with a cry, covered his neck with his
hand, and said : 'For God's eake don't
shoot me V We were both too much
shocked to say anything for some mo?
ments. Explanations followed. We
bad both dreamed the same thing.
Oddly enough, in looking at my vest
afterwards I found a smear of some?
thing red on it about the size of a
quarter. This had been concealed by
J my coat, and had not been noticed in
j the hurry of dressing. A chemist
I afterwards removed the stain, and said
it was human blood."
