WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3.
Experiment in Cotton Cul?
ture.
"J. M. G." contributes the follow?
ing ta the Fairfield News and Herald
AU such observations as are here ?-iven
are valuable, and should be published
for the general good : Having giveu
my attention closely as to th? best mode
of preparing land to -plac?; and cultivate
a cotton crop, I made a discovery the
past year, aod send it for publication
Ito. January,. 1S"S5, ? planted ia tay
garden eight young peach tree?, tu
rows fifteen fci?t apart, and in March
of last year planted lucerne ia drills
jenaing parawel with the trees, com
meacing far enc- off not to be in
jared by ther had the ground
heavily cuan*" bf green cotton seed,
\<? phosphate ana manure, previous lo
preparing to plant, and some of the
eotton seed (Peterkin) was scattered
suSciently far to fall between the trees
Stalks of cotton came up ia April where
there* li ad been no plowitg. I decided
to select a stalk as near as I -couW be?
tween the tr?es, and have them culti
iwfted with the coe in order to keep
grass and weeds from injuring them,
and notice the result I bad eight
?talks, and those which did not appear
affected by the trees made an excellent
yield, one of which had 12$ bolls, and
all, except sir or eight, opened suiri
ciently to be picked. Another, which
was broken about the middie of July,
limbed out and made SD boils, one
??tub having 2S.
The above goes to teach that the plow
ts oftentimes used too freely ia the cul?
tivation pf the crop, for io this iustaoee
there was no preparation of the land
whatever. In the planting of lucerne
below and corn above the trees, the
earth between, where the cott n carne
op, had never leen broken in width
fro? two to two and one-half feet.
The above experiment- clearly demon?
strates that laad generally w>u4d only
refaire thorough preparation to plant,
after which surface cultuie to keep the
crop clean and earth from crusting after
rains. Co oar sloping lands prepare
well, with rows on a level, and cf good
width. Celtivate with a sweep deep
enough to stir the surface well, and hoe j
to keep the crop clean of grass, and on
*'laying-bj'*" always ran a straight
?hovel furrow rn thc middle of each j
row, to receive surplus rain water aud
preventing the washing of the land
across the rows. The only calls for j
?ny more plowing would be in case of j
nins in June, euScient to compact the
?oil on land destitute of hoares, thereby j
preventing the roots from permeating ]
?he soil thoroughly, for after June the
cetton requires all the roots it has for i
?fee full growth cf stalk and develop- j
?men? of fruit. I have often seen i
volunteer stalks near the end of rows j
that received no preparation of land cr ]
?cultivation whatever, wei i fruited.
The above mode of cultivation is
-generally practiced by the majority of j
"farmers on plantations of a sandy qual?
ity of soil, and the above experiment
.shows it can be don*3 on any of our
lands, if the seasons are anywise uni?
form. ? do not advocate it ca the
ground of increased acreage being
planted, bot to lessen somewhat the cx
gease of labor and horse power.
Never Tired,
"When this country was first settled, j
there was an impression assong the I
colonists that the Indians had no intel- i
ligefcce nor craft irr their relations with !
the white men. Thc latter soon found, j
however, that tl?i> was cot the case !
Soae of ike farteers attempted to make j
farm servants cf the Indians, but dis- !
cover*.d that t::cy hud a pr:? pee ?'tv to j
<4get tired" so soon after they bejran j
work that their services were of little j
value. One day a farmer was visited ;
by a stalwart indian, who ?uid, ' Mt j
want work.'*
"No." said the farmer, "you will j
get tired/' j
**Nc, no," said the Indias, "me I
never get tired !"
The farmer, triking his word for it. j
pet the indian to work, and went away j
about some other business. Toward j
noon he teturned to the place, and found ;
'?fr? ?odian sound asleep under a tree. j
"Look here, look here," shouted the
termer, shaking the Indian violently. !
..'you told me that you cover got :;r..d. ;
and yet here you are stretched out oa :
tfce ground P
"Ugh!'7 said the Indian, rubbing j
his eyes, and slowly clambering: to bis ;
feet, "if me not lie down, me get tired i
like the rest !"

Signal Observer O'Brien, of Jupiter
Inlet, Fia., massed through the city
yesterday on his way to Washington on
a fifteen days' furlough. Mr. O'Brien
says that the fish, turtles and other
marine life are being destroyed, about
fifteen miles ofi Jupiter Iu?et, by au
oily substance which has made its ap?
pearance on the water within the past
three weeks. It has destroyed the
splendid snapper ar.d ba?.s Sshing in
; that locality, and deep sea turtle? aud
j many varieties of fish by the thousand*
j have come to Surface as dead ss a
; March berrinp\ It is believed that
I some seismic sub-marine disturbance
I h?s opened a cavi'y and liberated a vein
; of oil, which, coming up through the
! fishing banks, has hilled the fish by
the strong impregnation -of the water.
As thia has occured within fifteen miles
j of land, investigations will no doubt
j follow to see if oil does not underlie
' that portion of South Florida, and it is
! believed that when the matter is brought
! to the attention of oil men prospecting
! will follow. That the substance on the
water is oil is conceded, and being
upheaved ia that immediate locality the
I concision follows that oil can be found

No Darkies in the White

BALTIMORE, March 24.-Tho Sun's

?; the following : "Mrs. Harrison is re
placing the servants in thc White
House, substituting white help for the
negro servauts who have had control of
the c<>me>tie machinery for many years.
; The colored women in the laundry have
; been superseded by white women, and
; the cooks in the kitchen. A white but?
ler and waiters will be the next move,
which will completely revolutionize the
hcusehold corps."

Tin in North Carolina.
The Xew York T:mes says: Mr.
John H. Forman, of King's .Mountain,
N. C., addressed the New York Acad?
emy of Sciences at Columbia Coliege
last evening on :'The Tiu Deposits of
North Carolina " A vein of tin ore
was discovered and investigated by Mr.
Furman, which he thinks will be fouud
cf great value, being richest about two
miles north and six miles south of
King's Mountain. Ur. A. R Ladoux,
who discussed the subject, said the con
dition for inkling tin in the region of
which Mr. Furman had spoken seemed ]
to be favorable, and ail that remained
was to find out i? there was tin in suffi
cient quantities to pay for getting it
