Marblehead, Mass., the great shoe

says the New York Herald, 'the Demo?

March next, represents about ninety
thousand more American citizens than
the Republican party, which enters tbe

Tbe Anderson Journal knows now
why the State of Iowa is so intensely
Republican. Niles G Parker, the in
.JjajBjoaa State Treasurer of South Caro
-S- lina during tHe Radical days of good
stealing, is now the editor of a so-called
Democratic paper in Iowa, and was a
nominee of the party for Cleveland
elector in the late election. Such as
that is enough to make Texas go Re?

One of thc mest important scientific
discoveries lately reported is the dis?

by Dr. J. E Reeves, of Chattanooga
Heretofore these germs have been
searcbod for in vain, and if true that
the microbes have been brought to light,
it is hoped that it may lead to a better
knowledge of the treatment of this
dreadful disease and tbe best way to j
combat it.
Of the death of the notorious Jobo
B Hubbard, the Ooonee Couriersaya:
Mr John B. Hubbard, wbo was con?
nected with the arrest and execution of
Mrs. Surratt and others implicated in
the assassination of President Liu co! rt, I
and afterwards the special detective for
Geo. Sickles during the military gov
ernment of the State, and who was
Chief of the Constabulary force under
Gov. Scott's administration, died at his
borne, seven miles belo* Seneca ii this

ging. These are as follows: 1. The
bagging can be manufactured of almost
any weight per yard. 2 It will not
rot or stain cotton. S It can be manu?
factured and sold at a less price than
jute bagging, even if the jute should be
put on the free list. The committee
think that with new and improved
machinery, the manufacture of pine
straw bagging will become one of the
most popular industries. The raw
material costs nothing beyond gathering
it from the ground and transportation
to the mills.

Rev. Irl, R. Hicks on the
Weather.
The frigid weather following the
December storms will scarcely have
time to react, before we are again
plunged into the active storm period
reaching from January the 1st to 7th
We calculate that equinoxes of both
Venus and Valcan fall on the 2d. con?
sequently their combined influences will
be felt during this period. This com?
bination often results in the widest
extremes of phenomena. The same
locality may have rain and thunder fol
lowed io a few hours by heavy snow
and deathly cold ; and these extremes
often exist at the same moment in
localities near to each o the*. Protect
your live stock.
The disturbing power of Venus will
continue throogjj.^ne nexK?torm period
-from the ?th to 18th-rh4s time
with the direct combination of Vulcan
^afld Mercury, the latter falling on the
13th and the 14th. The presence of
Mercury in the very center of this
period is almost certain to bring heavy
and destructive sleet. Telegraph lines
will suffer. Blizzard regions should be
on the lookout. About .the winding up
of the storms of this period, the coldest
days of the winter are probable-cer?
tain.
The next regular period will run
from the 23d to the 29th. The extreme
cold will most likely relax its grip as
this period progresses, until culmina?
tions of rain and snow appear, after
which it will again turn very cold.
Upon the whole we calculate that
January will prove a bard winter month.
There are two new moons in January
on the 1st and 30th. Earthquake dis?
turbance will most likely occur on
"danger days" nearest to these dates.
Earthquake warning for December was
veri Sed.
Ridiculous and Stupid.
People who deny that the Sootheru
elections are marked, by extensive
frauds will do well to study these
figures, and explaio how it happens that
the Republican vote bas fallen off in
every one of the eight Southern States,
while the Democratic vote has increased
largely in all except South Carolina -
N. T. Tri?we.
What would happen to the Republi?
can vote in New York if that party
shoal i abandon its organization for
eight years, run no tickets, hold no
meetings and put out no "boodle f '
This has been the policy and the con?
dition of the Republican party in seve?
ral of the Southern States since 1880.
The practice of counting every absent
voter as a "suppressed Republican"
is getting to be ridiculous as well as
stupid.-N. 7. World.
The cotton tax, unjustly assessed
upon the Southern people just after the
civil war, one of the many cruelly con?
ceived and oppressive measures of re?
taliation by the leaders of the Repubii
can party, ought to be refunded.
Nearly $70,000,000 of this tax have
been covered into the Federal Treas?
ury under a decision of the Federal
Supreme Court. This vast sum of
money lies there doing noone any good.
Why not return it to the States from
whom it was collected in the sums set
opposite their names on the rolls of the
Treasury. Justice would say that this
should be done, especially hince it is
generally agreed that it would be im?
possible to return it to the original
taxpayers. The Supreme Court has
said that the tax was unconstitutional
and, therefore, wrong and unjust.
Wilmington Messenger.
The colored man is going out of fash?
ion in New York, mach to his disgust,
according to a speaker at the Checker?
ing Hall meeting last week 'The col?
ored coachman and the colored barber/
he said, 'have disappeared from New
York ; the Englishman wears the
waiter's apron in the hotel dining rooms,
the Irishman has seized the whitewash
brush, and the almond eyed Mongolian
peeps over the washtub where once the
darkey's face was seen.'
The Colonel, who lives in the South
was finding fault with Bill, and of his
hands, for neglect of work, and saying
that be wouldn't have any more preach?
ers about the place-they had too many
protracted meetings to atteud. "Bill
ain't no preacher," savs Sam. "He's
only a 'zorler " Well, what's the
difference between a preacher and an
exorter ?" "Why. yoa know, a preach?
er- he takes a tex'* and den he dor e
got to stick to it. But a 'zorter-he

A small piece of salt pork boiled with
fricasseed chicken will import a rich?

better than if nothing but butter ia used
