A MOUNTAIN REVIVALIST.
I.was well above Rogersville. Tenn.,
and could look down into -some of the
prettiest coves and valleys in ail the
state, when 1 heard a voice singing on tho
trail ahead As ? came nearer ? discov
erp4 a man seated ou a rock with a book
in his hand. Do was a hard looking cus
temer, ragged, unshaved and unwashed,
tod ho sung wita such, energy and in
such harsh ?tones thai I suspected hs was
crazy. However, as soon as ho heard and
saw me he called out:
"Ce not .afraid, stranger; I am here to
do tho Lord s .vork. Two months ago I
was the most shnckless critter in ail Ten?
nessee, aed wicked to boot. Light has
busted in upon me, and I am irvin' to
- make my feiler critters see and mend tho
error of their ways. Let us sing."
Ho had a Moody and Sankey hymn book,
birt ho contd only read with difficulty,
and his enthusiasm was too great for him

When he had finished his song ho an
Bounced that he was a revivalist on his
tour to stir up tho sinners of tho moun?
tains, and that ho was to hold services
that afternoon at Whartons Valley, about
five miles away. As I was bound for tho
same place we went on in company. 1
soon discovered that the man was rough,
ignorant and given to plug tobacco, but
ho seemed earnest in his mission, and so i
found many excuses for him. Ho could
chew more toixtcco in a given time and
spit further through his front teeth than
any man I ever saw. I carried a fow plug3
in my knapsack for the benefit of tho na?
tives at largo, and he soon disco vered this
and now and then would obsei ve:
"Yes, stranger, although you may hov
bin a. pirate, there's hope ahead fur you,
and I'll take another bite o* that plug."
By tho time wo had arrived at Whar- I
ton's, ho had wasted half my stock, and
bad spat upon every rock on the wayside.
There were two cabins here, with three
others within the milo, and about fifteen
people had gathered to hear thc revivalist
talk. He introduced me as "a feller crit?
ter** he Lad picked up on tho way, and
added that I evidently needed praying for
the worst way. Tho people received him
rather coldly, I thought, and I soon
learned tho reason. When we liad had a
bite toeat the peopio arranged themselves
about the open door of tho cabin, and the
revivalist began by saying: 9
"Thar's sin and wickedness y ere-heaps
of it. You'uns is nnthin' but a shnckless
pack of sinners on yer way to a fiery fur?
nace fed with sulphur and brims ten. The
devil is clus behind, the hull of yo, an' he s
bound to git ye."
"Look-a-yere, Joe Williams!" inter?
rupted a tail and fierions looking moun?
taineer as ho rose up, "let's start this
yere sarcumstanco at tho beginn in'. In
the fust place, who was ye?"
"Don't interrupt asarvent of the Lord!**
warned Joe.
"Yes, who was ye?" inquired a woman j
as she laid asido her snuff stick to stand ?
up. "Ye was pore an* shnckless an' low
down. Joe Williams, only a few weeks
ago, Ycr hull fain Ty was bar fut, an' tho
hist ye had to eat was bar meat an*
pones. Yo drank mo' whisky than all
the men put together, an' yo never had a
second shirt to yer backl"
This wasn't a corker fer Joseph. Ho
heard the woman through with a smile,
and then said:
"A sarvent of the Lord must take the
abuse of shnckless sinners and tarn tho
other cheek. I hcv cum up yere to warn
ye that tho seventh signals has bin sot in
tho heavens as a warn in "I Woe! Woe!
"Woe! Them as gin heed will pass down
the trail clothed in silks an* satins an'
pearls. Them as scoff an' revile an' cuss
around will be rooken by tho heels an'
Hung into the fiery furnace, which is ICO
feet deep an' full of twist in' sarpints." -
Two children were overcome and began
to cry at this, but the father of one of
them gave Lim a box on the ear and rose
up and said:
"Who was you an* what is you? We
all know you to bo a shiffless, onery,
shnckless varmint. You wasn't fit to wi po j
up skunk's ile fur ten long y'ars. Then j
you went ever to Knoxville, jined tho j
Salvation Army, an' hev cum back yero to I
call us poro and wuthless sinners. "
"Let us sing." enid the revivalist, as j
the other paused, but the people groaned j
him down, and tho oilier continued:
"We'vo bin fcedin* yer pore heart?
broken wife ana children, an* you hev bin
Ijaliivantiu* around an* purtencin' you had
a call from tho Lord to whoop cr up. I
kin tell ye to yer face, Joe Williams, that ,
tb?3 settlement wants none o' your kind j
of religan, an* it wants a mighty sight
less of you! Git right down an' shot!"
Hain't I got relignn?" demanded Joe. -
"Has a b ar got wings?" answered ono i
of tho women. "The Lord wouldn't hev j
ye. Joe, an' you know it. You's too onery !
all through. You's too lazy to hold to j
religion ir you got it."
"He's j ist got to shet!" shouted another i
woman.
"Hain't ? got no call to spread tho Cos- j
pel?" asked ?oe.
"Nary call. " answered one of tho men !

"An* I've? mistook, hev I?" queried tho j
alleged revivalizt.
"You hev! Now, then, you pint fur !

"Nay burs." said Joo after a painful ?
riuso. "if I've mistook then I've mistook. I
reckon you know better nor me, an' I'm i

how I mistook, but I shan't go agin yer j
words."
With that ho stepped down and ont and i
cease i to be a revivalist and soon disap j
peared. Then thc big man with tho seri- j
ons faco got np, turned his eyes to
heaven and said: "Oh, Lord, wo is onery j
an' mean and ?ow down. Wc i> shnckless
an* shif'less. We hov made whisky agin' j
the law, an' we hcv bin liars an' profaners. j
Thar's nothin'pizen mean that wc hcv?'t j
dono ct some timo or other, but we reek- ?
ons on thy goodness to forgive. We is
poro an* ignorant. Some of gas can't road

With that the meeting ended, and tho i
big man took mc by tho hand and said he |

Various Uses for Sawdust.
The uses fer sawdust are steadily mul?
tiplying, and it is in ever increasing de?
mand, lt is used very extensively in
packing goods for shipment. Fer stabling
purposes it is used quite largely, being
cheaper and cleaner than straw. Many
thousands of coras are used yearly in tho
manufacture of terra cotta. It also en?
ters largely into the construction of
apsrtment houses, for filling walls and
floors to deaden sound. Theso are but a
few of the uses for which sawdust ii ia
deisand. Shingle excelsior, when mao*
of cedar, is an excellent moth extermi?
nator, and is much used in packing.
Planer sharings are used for all kinds Of
packing, and also for bedding in stables,

lic has already a very creditable system,
but needs some additional lines and some
extensions. But the projects are coming
np in astonishing numbers, far beyond
the n?eas of tho country, their promoters
being stimulated by the concessions and
guarantees which the government has

Professor Joseph L9 Conto declares that
for every grade of culture, whether of the
individual or of the race, there is a cor?
responding grade of handwork necessary
for the best brain culture. In the child
of pre-school age and in the savage and
in palaeolithic man, it is the simple use of
the hand, or assisted by rude implements:
in the schoolboy cr girl, as also in the
next higher grade of races, it is by tho
use of those finer instruments .which we
call tools; and in the university, as in the
most civilized rc#ces, it is by the use of
scientific instruments and machines.

At tho florists* convention in New York
one of the addresses was on the wonder?
ful growth of the florists' trade in this
country. In 1S40 Isaac McKenna was one
of tho few florists in Kew York. Ile
worked like a slave, standing all day long
on Wall street with a basket of flowers
on his arm, shouting his wares and con?
gratulating himself when fortuno smiled
on him to the extent of $2 per day. Now
some 30,000 buds a year are sold* in New
York alone, and thousands of stores aro
devoted to the sale of flowers.-Chicago

Tho Youngest War Veteran.
The man who claims to be the youngest
war veteran in the country is Charles L.
Stone, of Philadelphia. He was 14 years
of age when he carried a gun at the battle
of Gettysburg. At that battle he was
wounded in tho left arm by a rifle ball.
Part of the "funny bone" had to be cut
away, and he says that his appreciation of
a joke is not as vivid as lt should be.
But he still has tho humerus of his right
arm. That ought to help him a good deal
in keeping up with American wit.-New
