TEACHERS' COLUMN..
EDITED BY J. T. - "WILDER.
As an examination for teachers will
be heid on the 6th of next month, and
teachers will be examined io Spelling.

Geography, Grammar, History, The?
ory and Practico of Teaching, and
Physiology and ITygeine, rt will be
weil- -for those who expect to appear
before the Board to make ?ome -spe?
cial preparation for this examination.
In spelling it is our planto submit
twenty-five words lo be spelled,
marking according to the number of
words misspelled. We never select
ratty catch words, but they aro such
as should be 'known. We herewith
.subjoin a list of words for spelling,
Trout which teachers may find, possi
bryj-scrrae of the words which will be
selected.
Our method of examination in
penmanship and reading differs some?
what from the old way of examina?
tion in those branches. These two
branches are very important, yet,
doubtless, receive foss attention than
any others.

Educational Journals.
How many teachers in the State ?
could answer "Yes" to the quest-ion j
always asked in some States in exam?
inations for certificates to teach, "Do
you take an educational journal ?"
In those States, too; if a teacher
should chance tb hz fon nd who is so
dead as not to take and read some
journal of education, he -receives but
little consideration from those who
work with an honest, earnest purpose,
unless he awakes and makes for him?
self a place in the ranks of genuine j
workers. Do not allow yourselves to ?
remain in the well-worn ruts. Be tip j
and doing. Read the journals de-'
?.yeted to your work, and not only
prea'd them but carry the many good
j things which they contain into your
school room and apply them to the
day's duties. New ideas work like
charra ia securing and keeping the at?
tention of the class. Search for the
best plans and make them your own.
In educational journals you will find
true helpers. Take them, read them,
and strive to make yourself worthy of
your position.- Carolina Teacher.

At the last meetiog of the Woman's

were passed :
Resolved, That we, as W. C. T. U.
women of this country, deplore the use
of the pictures of women on the
advertisements of whiskey and tobacco,
and we pledge ourselves to use our voice
against it, for we believe it to be an in?

to the advancement of good morals.
Postmaster Mowry has received a
letter in which it is mentioned that in?
formation is desired concerning Kitty
Harrell, daughter of Josiah T. Harrell.
She is supposed to have married a

The New York Herald continues to
expose the 'trusts' and combinations.
The latest is a triple beaded combine of
the makers of watch cases, makers of
works and jewelry jobbers to keep up
prices to a specified standard. Another
'trust' is that of the three leading spool
thread manufacturers of the country
who are working together to maintain
prices.
Mr. W. L. Bass, of Kingstree, has
invented a type-writer. It is claimed
that his machine is made on a much
simpler pian than others, and that it
can be manufactured at about one-third
of their cost. Another advantoge will
be that it will require only ordinary
type, thus makiog it possible to use any
style of type desired ic the same block.
The type can be changed with very little
trouble and at merely a nominal ex?
pense.

.Peterson's Magazine for April comes, as
usual/among the very earliest of the moa th's
periodicals, and is one of the most interesting
and welcome. The steel-plate wood-engrav?
ings, and dress patterns are all of superior
merit, and the literary portion of the maga?
zine deserves the highest praise. This friend
of countless households for so many years is
still as thoroughly to be depended on as when
it begun its popular career. It never fails,
each twelvemonth, to bring forward new at?
tractions in its literary, fasb'on, .'.od house?
hold department. While retaining old favor?
ites, ''Peterson" constantly finds new writers
of promise; and, in all matters connected
with dress and needlework, it contrives to
render itself more and more i a dispensable to
ladies. It is a live, first-class magazine, np
to the needs of the time in every respect, and
this is the secret of its ever-growing popu?
larity. Terms: Two Dollars a year. Ad?
