Bea. F. : BttUtr. I JU The Education of Women. Thc last Edinbarg Renew contains an article with the above title which sketches the progress made in this direction during the last seventy-five years. It recalls the fact that sev enty years ago, there appeared iii the Review au article by Sydney-Smith cn the controversy then raging between the friends and foes of the higher ed? ucation of women. Says the Remeto : Things which, in the days of Hannah More, were sol? emnly affirmed to be unwomanly, in? delicate, unseemly and ruinous to the best interests x>f the fair sex, have been achieved without injury, it is said, to man, woman cr child. 'Much lias been said,' remarked j Sydney Smith, in that opening con ; troversy, 'of the original difference ! between men and women, as if wo? men were simply more quick and men more judicious ; women more remark? able for delicacy o? association, men for stronger powers of intellect, whereas, there is no difference be? tween them bat that which arises from difference of circumstances Women/ he went on to say, 'are excluded from the pursuit of all serious business j it is men, and men only, who are law? yers, physicians, clerks and apothe? caries.7 Ile also exclaims, with a pathos we, seventy years later, can well appreciate, *Vvhy should a wo? man of forty be more ignorant than a boy of twelve ?' This is a little start? ling, read to-day, and reveals the progress made in the advancement of women since this debate was opened. He further queries, 'Does a mother's care depend on her ignorance of math? ematics? Has ignorance been the civilizer of the world ?' 'So completely has woman been crushed,' he goes on to say, 'that scarcely a ?ingle work of reason or imagination written by a woman is in general circulation. * * Scarce? ly one has crept into the rank of minor poets.' Mr. Smith had evi? dently forgotten to note Miss Edge? worth, Miss Austen and Madam de Stael. There are three things which boys, and girls, too, who wish to grow up good and noble men and women, must always avoid-but especially the boys as these are not the sins which usu? ally beset the paths of giris. Some? times, indeed, we hear of women who are^so lost to all good that they are guilty of all three ; but, thank God I not often. The 6rst Hiing and worst thing you may easily guess. It is whisky. Oh, boys, I want you ali to make a resolution now, while you are so young, never to use, buy, sell, make, give, or take that terrible thing called strong drink ! Include the whole clasa-wine, cider, beer, whisky, brandy, rum, gin, alcohol-any tiling and everything which can intoxicate. ! They never bring good, but always do harm. The best physicians say j that even where they are used in j sickness, the patient would be better j off without them, and that no Ufe has ever been prolonged by their use. The next thing to avoid is that nasty, filthy thing called tobacco. Oh ! how mach money, time, health, hon? esty, morality, and happiness have been sacrificed to that terrible old tobacco-worm ? Oh, boys ! as yon hope to be men, don't chew it I Neither chew it, nor snuff li, nor smoke it in pipes, eigars, or those little evil things called cig? arettes, which lead as surely to the greater wrongr, as a shadow follows a substance. Don't use tobacco in any form, at any time, in any place, and j you will be better and happier for it. The third thing to avoid is profan? ity. Oh, if God should take swear? ers at their word, when they call upon him so impiously, what a fearful fate would be theirs ! Dea;- boys, don't open your lips to curse and swear. There is nothing manly or good about it. Keep your lips and your lives pure, and the world will be better because of you. Her Brother. ' The Mount Lebanon (New York) Shakers are a quiet com? munity, secluded from the fret and worry of the outside world They are widely known, how? ever, for their strict honor and probity in business. The Shakers "believe that na? ture has a remedy for every dis? ease. A few have been found the rest are as yet unknown. Many were discovered by acci? dent. Others came to light as the result of patient experiment md research. Nervous Dyspepsia is a com? paratively neiv disease, growing out of the conditions of modern life. It is-a joint auction of the digestive organs and of the nervous -svstem.
