Mr. Editor ; .1 wish tocall the attention of the County Commissioners and others who may feel interested in the poor people of Sum? ter County, to the fact that we have a lew cases in our neighborhood that need some help, if any in the County do. I most say that I think our Commissioners are failing to do their duty in this very important direction. O o r Conn ty treasory -is dou bt?e&s ?usb enough with means to relieve our starving poor. Some may be ready to say r ; '?We don't think they are starving." Well, you. can call it what you may, bit place yourself io their condition, in every respect, and you will cry out "Starvation" long before yon reach their helpless condition. If the funds in the treasury are not sufficient it would be better to curtail some other expense to relieve the starving, freezing poor. "Blessed is he that coosidereth the poor, , the Lord will de? liver bim in time of trouble." We'have some cases here in our neighborhood and if the Commissioners will call around, twilUtake -pleasure ia carryiag them tbtsee^some of these people of whomT speak.* Irtiin?roor eyes ought to be opened ic this direction. The means for. this relief are placed in your reach, and God will hold you accountable for these things. You ought to plead for help for the poor. Christmas is drawing near and all the bornes of the wealthy and the well-to do class of people are filled with joyful antic? ipations of the rich feast of good things. Now what for the poor? What is their hope of enjoyment? And just nereis a great work we can do. Let os deny ourselves a little "and make glad the hearts of the needy.*' At that Great Day when all flesh will stand be? fore the tribunal of God, the Great Judge will fill these neglected and penniless ones with all the good things of Heaven, and those who neglected their duty to the weak ones of the earth will be. pointed back to this world where the poor were neglected and they will be sent away empty. Consider tbe poor and the promise is Heaven.; .neglect^ and despise thain and. the promise is bell. \ I hope those who haye the power and means in this direc? tion will give tbe matter more earnest atten? tion that baa been done in the past. Not only the County Commissioners but the Church seems to be sleeping in this mat? ter, and will some day be awakened to ber sorrow. My object m this is to bring about some influence for good, and that right speedily. 1 have beard and seen enocgh of late to arouse any living mao, and I intend to be more awake along that line than ever before. We may think some of these suffering ones are not worthy, but we are not to be the judge tn this matter, and of one thing we may be certain, help is needed and needed now. What we do must be do:<e in th's world, and I there is nothing more forcibly laid on ?3 as a duty than the consideration of the poor. Give this matter one serious thought and see if you can find any other object on the face of this pleasant earth more neglected. We need a reformation and I trust that every man will use the means placed in his reach to re? lieve suffering and do ail the good he can while be lives. - ~D> D.
