A Celestial Head-Light,
A. railroad engineer recounting, his
experiences, said that he had thus far
escaped smash-ups, bot that he thought

"It was a clear autumn evening, and
I was running a passenger train in Vir?
ginia. We were a little behind time,
and I was whooping the old machine
alon g at a good pace. There was a strip
of cypress forest to go through, andj^

to westward. Just as we made that turo

teeth, for there coming straight down
the track, was another engine, with her
head-light flaming in my-eyes. I blew
'down brakes' and had my engine re

and sent the train back on a dead run to
a s witch station about a mile behind us.
I got in OE: a siding,: and waited for the
other train, that I supposed to be jost
on top of cs, but she didn't show up. I
got the agent to wire up the line to see if
there were any specials or wild engines in
they way, but the answer was that the
line was clear. The passengers got out,
and began to talk and ask questions, and
as for me, I was stumped. I thought of
runaway locomotives and train-wreckers
and tramps. Everything was quiet
around, the bend, so far as I could see
and bear. While standing on thc
station platform I happened to glance
westward across a clearing : there was
the head-light shining through the cy*
presses, as s?rene and steady as you
please. It was the planet Venus.

expand. When within about 3,000
feet of the earth the cord was cut and
the parachute rapidly descended, with
Godard hanging on the bar. The bal?
loon-shot upward again. The descent
of the parachute was keenly watched by
the thousands of spectators, and many
expected to see *the daring man dashed
to the earth in the twinkling of an eye.
It was observed, however, that the
nearer to the earth the parachute came
the descent was slow and easy. At last
the man and his big umbrella faded out of
sight over ;he hills, and we learned
next morning that he came down all
right on bis feet, like a cat, about a naif
mile west of the old Bell travern on the
Darby road. The bftMooo landed in
Delaware county, near the Philadelphia
line. Godard and his brother were
Frenchmen. They returned to their
native country, and, I believe, were
valuable to their countrymen during thc
Franco-Prussian war. Gambetta sailed
out of Paris to Tours tn one. of their
balloons.
The Trial Justices.
We publish in another column a let?
ter written to the News and Courier
concerning tte trial justice system. The
writer hits the nail on the head when
he says poor pay secures poor work.
Our present magistrate system is a dis
grace to the State. The office is an
important one and one that should be
?lied by a good lawyer or one who has
prepared himself by a course of reading.
As difficult questions come up before
these officers as before the Circuit Judge.
How can a man who knows nothing
about evidence decide a question of ev?
idence ? It is simply guess work. The
great majority of our trial justices are
legal ignoramuses. It is an outrage to
place the rights of State and individuals
in the hands of such men. For instance,
trial justices try a great many criminal
cases. It is a well known fact that the
State cannot appeal. Suppose the jus?
tice makes some great mistake against
the State. The criminal is acquitted
and the State can't help itself. Wby,
then, does the Legislature, whose duty
it ts to guard the interest of 1118 'gl^.
impose upon it by the continuance ot
such a system of guessing at right, and
oftener bitting the wrong? The fee
bill should be raised so as to give thc
trial justices respectable pay. Then
competent men would accept the office.
If we can't have this, then, for the sake
of justice, let us abolish the system.
The Legislature claims to be progres?
sive and yet takes no steps to improve
the trial justice system. It progresses
the wrong way. Because it reduces in?
stead of increasing the pay of these offi?
cers. How on earth can the trial jus?
tice at Bickens Court-house be expected*,
to do, and do well, ail the criminal bus"
iness which is brought before him fr""

Yet this is the pay. Good pay secu,res
good work, and nothing else will or can

In a difficulty which occurred at a
livery stable in Greenville on Monday
night, Robert Walker, who was drunk
at the timer" stabbed Ben Brockman,
colored,-in tbe left breast with a pocket
knife', inflicting a wound from which
^Brockman will probably die. Walker
was arrested and put in jail soon after
I the killing.
The Columbia Register says that a
gentleman of that city will prepare a
bill to be introduced in the Legislature
providing that all legal hangings in
South Carolina shall be done within the
walls of the Penitentiary by a regular
executioner, to be elected or appointed
Such a law is in force in Ohio and has
been found to work well thus far.
The missionary is needed amongst
the belligerent editors of our State. It
will fake a tidal wave of holiness to
wash all the hate and murderous m al ig
nity from the hearts of some of the
brethren, that is if their words indicate
the state of mind within. The 'sec
ood blessing' would not sweeten the
temper and affections and language of
these erring brethren, who seem to glo?
ry in this unbecoming warfare.-Caro?
