It was a wonder to us wjbry, there- were two forms of the indefinite article,-*an* and 'a,* and only one of the definite. The truth is that in pronunciation, though not in spelling, there are two forms of the article 'the,' as distinct as those of the indefinite article. When itx?ciiri before.a word Beginning witlr a vowel sound, we prouounce it 'thi,' like the first three letters of 'this ;' but, when the nest word begins with a consonant sound, we call it 'the,' like the first three letters of 'then.' 'The man plays on the [tht] organ,' As to the indefinite article, some overlook an important exception to the usual rule. Though 'a*, regularly precedes a word beginning with a con* sonant sound, .'an* is used by the best writers and speakers, if the following word beginning with h is accented on the second syllable. We say *a histo? ry/ but *an historical work.' So, 'an harmonious combination. - . Silent Letters. We have many words in which cer? tain letters, though necessary to the spelling, have no iufiaence on the pro? nunciation, in these cases, it is as great an impropriety to give these let? ters any sound whatever as to fail to utter others .which custom requires tobe distinctly pronounced. m . The final syllable '-ten* in many instances gives no sound to either t or e We pronounce *fasten,' 'hasten,' .chasten,' 'listen,' 'glisten,' 'moisten,' .christen/as if they were spelled 'fas'n,' *has*n,' &c. In like manner, and especially, we call 'often' 'of o,' 'soften' sofn.' In final '-tie' after s, the t is almost always silent; as in Vpistle,' 'apostle,' 'castle,' 'wrestle,' 'bustle,* 'thistle,'* .jostle,' 'nestle,* pronounced epis'l,' j 'apos'l.' &c. We have several words mostly de? rived from the Greek, in which the first letter is sileut because of the difficulty of pronouncing it ia combination with the second. Instances of these are 'mnemonics:' 'psychology,* 'pneumonia/ 'phthfs?c,'~'"Ptol?my/ 'gnomon / besides ainumber which begin with hi or gn ; :as?'knife/ *gnat/ &c.
