THE FORCE OF HABIT.
The haman being is a carious study,
joy boy. When you come to consider
lum by piecemeal, "nothing is more
curions about him than this thing we
call habit. It has more to do with his
?access or failure in lite than you have
:. reflected OD. While we make our
habits, they make or unmake us. A
habit is something which is at first
.\v undefined, bat which in time may be?
come a positive moqster. The tie is at
?rsfe a weak thread ivhich "an infant
could snap in twain, bat as the years
; go by, the thread becomes a cord-a
/'T?pe--a chain which no human effort
can break. Lecture a man on his
~"~~r?io?s-hobits, and -g&ie he will admit
the justice of your assertions, he cannot
break .his bonds without putting forth
auch efforts as discourage forty-nice out
of fifty at the start. . Let me talk to
yon a little while as ahoy, and waru
yon how habit may spoil you as a
man. .
While it is true that some persons
seem born good-natured and others
peevish, the peevishee? is more a habit
; ? than a birth-right. You can let little
things vex and annoy you, or you can
throw them off. You may have heard
a child snarl and cry by the half hour
because refused something. The moth?
ar will make a peevish youth of that
child. You have met boys who were
^ always whining that their kites were
lost, or some one made up faces at
them, or their knives were mislaid, or
i some one called 'em names. If those
boys grow to be men they will have no |
friends. Their whining is simply a ;
habit. ?
On the other hand, you can name j
~ boys who never appear to have any j
cause for complaint. They are good
natured, cheer "ul and willing, and they
never want for friends or favors. * You
can class yourself with either, just as
you will. AU your Utile annoyances
'/ and. vexations can be trodden under
foot, or yoa can magnify them until
yon firmly believe that you were born
into the world for a first-class martyr.
- PROFANE SWEARING.
Great numbers of the male popula?

guage. Why ? Ask any man and
his reply will be : 'Oh, I got into the
habit of it-and I don't think.'
He doesn't swear because he wants
to be,classed as wicked, but habit has
him on the hip, and men dressed as
gentlemen go aboat blurting out oaths
< that shock you. You can become just
such a man, or you can carry a clean
- mouth and win respect where they ?
secure disgust.
CHEWING TOBACCO.
One-third, perhaps, of the men of '
America chew and smoke. Ask that
man who has just discharged a half a I
gill of tobacco juice on thc side-walk if |
he chews because be loves the weed,!
and he will answer: 'Bless you, no I
It's a filthy, unhealthy, abominable
thing, hut I've got into the habit of it
and can't stop.' And so from the day
he begins chewing, say at sixteen, until .
he dies, say the age of sixty, his to?
bacco not only costs him twenty-five
cents per week at the lowest estimate,
but for forty-four long years he soils
> his clothes, dirties bis house, disgusts
bis best friends and weakens his physical
and mental system. Habit, my boy
all habit. The first few chews make j
him terribly sick and ne could easily j
?top. He perseveres, however, -and
the habit begins to gain strength. Let" I
your first chew be your last. Let your j
first smoke end the matter of pipe and
cigars with you.
* "DOWN TOWN/'
If you live in a town or village, there
is an 'over town,' or 'up town,' or
'down town,' or 'across the river,'
which has its charms for a boy of your
age,* or you can imagine such to be the
case. There is a drug store or grocery
or barber-shop where certaiu men gath?
er in the evening to brag and lie and
swear and discuss all subjects. At six?
teen I looked upon those men as heroes
and sages. At twenty I was ready to
kick myself for ever havir-g given them
fifteen minutes of my tiree. A*k them j
why they thus idle a wu/ two cr three j
hours which could be so pleasantly I
spent at home with books, and any one |
of them will answer: 'Ob, I've kind o'
got in the habit of it, I suppose.' j
There may be nothing so very wicked \
about it, but you can see for yourself j
how silly it is to waste time in *bat ?
manner. It ;s the starting point in the j
- careers of lazy mea and ijafers. Look
around among your business acquain?
tances aad you will fiad that nine-tenths
of the successful ones and entirely all of
the representatives of good society, have
no 'down town' loafing places.

There is an example of habit. John
has just as much respect for his father
as William has, but he has fallen into
the habit of answering the handiest way, I
and his father has fallen into the habit j
of permitting it. 'Oh, what's the ?
difference?' you exclaim. Well John j
will let that habit grow on him until it I
will be 'yaas' and 'uaw' to strangers, j
ladies, everybody, and be will create j
aversion in place of friendship. And
more than that. I stood in a store the ?
other day, when a boy came ia and
applied for a situation.
'Can you write a good hand V was
asked.
'Yaas.'
'Good at figures V
*Yaas.'
*&aow the city well ?* .
*Yaas 9
'That will do; I don't want you,
said the merchant.
:But,' I said, w'-en the boy Fad gone,
*I know that lad to be an honest, in?
dustrious boy. Why don't you give
hioi a chaucer
'Because he hasn't learned to say
'Yes sir,* and 'No, sir.' If he answers
me as he did when applying for a situa?
tion, how will he answer customers after
being here a month V
What could I say to that? He had
fallen into a habit, young as he was,
which turned him away from thc first
situation he had ever applied for.-De?

St. John at Home.
The following clipping from the
Olathe, Kan., Mirror Gazette, shows
how highiy Gov. St. John is esteemed
ia his Kansas home :
The liberality of the people of Olathe
and surrounding country, regardless of
political bias was manifest last Saturday
forenoon by the cordial manner iu which
Es. Gov. J. P. St. John was received
at home. At ten o'clock a Dumber of
citizens in carriages marshalled by Capt.
E.jfJlark formed in line at the City
Park and marched to the Ft. Scott
depot to meet our distinguished citizen
whom the telegraph had announced
would arrive on the 10. 30 train. After
the usual greetings and handshaking at
the depot-, the procession moved down
Park Street to the band-stand where
the address of welcome was delivered
by Mr. J. R. F. Pilcher iu one of the
happiest efforts of the kind ever deliver?
ed iu this cit}?. The Governor responded
with considerable feeling in a short
speech, thanking his old neighbors and
friends for the many tokens of con?
fidence, esteem and good will that they
have ever manifested toward him. The
reception was tendered by the citizens
and received by Gov. St. John as a
spontaneous offering, without any politi?
cal significance whatever. li was a
worthy compliment of a generous people
to their distinguished friend and
neighbor.
The procession was Dearly a mile in
length and the crowd around the stand
was estimated at 3,000.

compel them to refuse a charity to
which it would give them pleasure to
contribute if they could, and we have
seen a little boy cry in secret because
a companion had called him stingy, j

be guilty of so great an indescretion as j
