when he came home, to find that John?

But Johnny had no wood, so he ran
?j ont to the grocery and begged some
??mpty cigar-boxes, to practice on.
Then began straight lines and curved
l?tes, ind the snapping of tiny saws.
Be broke a good many of those tiny j ;
Ettie saw-blades while learning. And
f l once begot a hard blow on his forehead,
^-v because he was bending too closely over
- the tilting table when a blade broke.
But he was learning all the time,
Nannie watebed bim with great ad
Antrat ion, and whimpered confidentially
^S"^.' to mamma,
^ "Johnny seems'a great deal older,
like a big man to me, now he's got his
' #etoH?8?W.,
She. might well admire him. for he
'presently cot out arms, back, aud seat,
r^?- fenr a little toy sofa, and glued it to
?ether for her.
But now be wanted wood, hollv,
. . walnut, white-wood, basswood, an j
eighth or an inch, a sixteenth of au j '
inch,-a quarter of an inch in thickness, j
and made in sheets on purpose for j
scroll-saws. He studied his patterns j ]
over and over, he could do such bea uti- j i
fol things if be only bad wood. He j4
was shy about asking for it, for he-kj
wanted two dollars' worth right off. j
But mamma only smiled ; this want ! <
she bad foreseen, and she went with j i
Johnny from one ?tote to another in j j
search of wood. They bad to go way i <
down Fulton Street before they had ? i
found the proper kind. j J
Then Johnny wanted a sheet of trac?
ing paper, and a little invention which
was shown bim for "blowing away the j <
: saw-dust from bis work. Also a dozen j
~ new saw-blades, because so many of bis j
snapped.
?Seems to ?ce, we're getting poorer j
instead of richer, now Johnny's got his j
scroll-saw,' sai'j little Nan, critically. |
Bot bis first work appeased her. It j
was a tiny holly-wood corner-bracket j
for ber doti's bou*?. Then he made a j
pair of black-waluut rests for the carving j
knife acct fork, to surprise papa at din- j
uer? and a very pretty match-safe for j
the bed-room. 1
?llore my holly scroll-saw, mamma !' j
be said, with a bright face.
The next thing be made was a little !
work-basket--^f white Holly, almost as j
dainty as frost-work. It bad eight j
sides, tied together with bows of narrow j
pink ribbon This was to be a surprise J
for Nannie when her birthday came,
and be had to work at it very cautiously, j
hiding the pieces whenever sbe ran into
the room.
When it was done, he put it in the
china-closet, up on tho pile of soup
plates so that she should not find it.
'Ob dear!' said Nanny one day soon
after? 'my Dame Crump book has all
fallen to pieces, and part of the reading
ts lost Now I don't care for it any
more V
.Will you give roe the pictures V
asked Johnny.
Nanny thought a minute. She was
just going to play with her paper-dolls,
sod they seemed nicer than pictures.
.?es, you may have them,' she de?
cided.
.Thank youT said Johnny; sod he
picked out the prettiest one and panted
it on ft sheet of white-wood of the sr.me ? 1
? te. As soon as it was dry he took it | *
to tbs scroll-saw, and sawed it ali up j1
" irregular carving lines, so that it I
fell into more than twenty pieces
.There, mam ma !' he exclaimed,
*isn't that just as good a dissected
picture as they sell iu the toy-shops V
Mamma said she thought it was, and
offered to pay bim thirty cents apiece
fur three similar oues, which she would
then send as presents to some little
nieces.
'I will put them in pretty pasteboard
boxes,' she said, 'aud they will do just
as well as the ones that cost seventy
five cents in the stores.'
Johnny felt that business was bright?
ening. He had three or four old books
himself, with just such gaily-painted,
full-page pictures ; and if he could gi t
four pictures from each book, and sell
them for thirty cents apiece, why, that
would bring him almost fivo dollars I
So he whistled cheerfully and mean?
while sawed up his odd bits of waluut
and holly into little palettes, such ns
ladies use to pnint pretty things on f< r
souvenirs. Mamma lent him the pat?
tern, and he sawed out fifteen of them
and smoothed thc edges with sand?
paper.
.Nannie,' he said, 'if you will go
down to the 'five cent store' and sell
-these pallet ts for four cents apiece, you
may hate ten cents of the money.'
Nannie was unusually gracious. She j
jumped np and said, eagerly,
'Yes, I'll go if you want me to,
Johnny/
? lt was wet weather, but she did. not
mind that. She put on ber robbers
and took an umbrella and started out,
with the precious pallettes done np in a
paper inside ber waterproof pocket.
In half an hour she came back.
.Did they buy them V asked Johnny,
anxiously.
Nannie was almost breathless with
excitement.
.I went there.' she said, 'and I asked
the woman behind the counter if she
wanted to buy pal letts for four cents
apiece. - But she didn't ; she said she
didn't want any such things at all. Buta
pretty lady was in there, and she look?
ed and said she wanted them ; it would
save her going down town to buy them.
And she paid me seventy-five cents !*
The children were both radiant over
this success, and Nannie said.
.Johnny is getting rich now, mam- !
ma. isn't be ?' .
Mamma thought thc eager rosy face ?
of the little pa?lette-peddler had some- j
thing to do with the sale ; but she said j
it teas encouraging, and now if Johnny j
would make some larger pallettes and
some panels, too, with as nice a finish j
as he ena ld put on, maybe he could j
sell them at the rooms near by where
there were classes in oil-painting.
Iir a few days more Nannie's birthday I
came, and she was delighted with the |
dissected Dame Crump picture, and in
ecstasies over the lovely work-basket.
Johnny was so pleased with her pleas?
ure that be did uot notice she was not
so surprised as &he ought to be.
But io a twilight talk that evening
with mamma. Nannie said,
.Mamma, one day I climbed np to
the closet to get my pink cup, and I j
saw that basket on the soup-plates. I j
was so in hopes that Johnny would j
give it to rae that I have tried to be a !
real good little sister ever since.'
Mamma kissed her and -said,' 'If the j
scroll-saw brings love and good-will i
into the house, it is better than if it :
brought money.' !
.But it brings money too !' said Nan- j
nie stoutly.
So it does It pays its own way at}
[rast. Johnny has made no intricate !
tlock-cases yet. no wonderful cabinets,
no elaborate brackets, but he has sold !
about a dozen of his dissected pictures, j
and he Suds a steady demand, week by ;
week, for his pretty panels and pallets, j
This is quhe enough, I think, for a j
boy who is not by any means a big boy j

"I wish to express my appreciation of the
valuable qualities of
Ayers Cherry Pectoral
as a cough remedy.
.? While with Churchill's anny, just before
the battle of Vicksburg, I contracted a se
Tere cold, which terminated in a dangerous
cough. I found no relief till on our march
we came to a country store, where, on asking
for some remedy, I was urged to try AYEE'S
CHERRY PECTORAL.
"i did so, and was rapidly cured. Since
then I have kept the PECTORAL constantly by
me, for family use, and I have found it to be
an invaluable remedy for throat and lang
diseases. J. W. WHITLEY."
Thousands of testimonials certify to the
prompt cure of all bronchial and lung
affections, by the nae of AYER'S CHERRY
