Mrs. Brown's Rag-bag.
Tommy Brown sat on ?lie doorstep
thinking. It was almost Fourth of
CT
July, and bc had only a few cents in
his pocket. How wav lie to get enough
to buy the fire crackers lie wanted ?
In thc little village where ho lived
boys never had much money to spend,
but 'hey all wanted at lea^t two packs
of fire-crackers apiece on Fourth of
July. Tommy lacked ten cents of the
needed amount, and where was he to
get it ?
Presently Sam Town went by the
gate whistling, with a bag on his arm.
'Hullo, Sam ? Where are you going ??
called out Tommy.
'Down to G i von's store to sell rags,'
replied Sam, cheerfully, 'aud get my
pay in fire-crackers I'
What a spendid idea ! Tommy sat no
longer to think ; it was time for action.
He ran into the house to find his moth?
er, who was busy cutting out aprons for
little Jennie.
'Oh mother !' he cried. 'Isn't your
rag-bag most full ? May T sell thc rags
and buy fire-erackers with the money V
Mrs. Brown had known her little
boy's longings, but had said nothing,
because she had uo money to spare.
So she too was glad when the rag-bag
was suggested.
'Yes, you may take it, Tommy,' she
said. Tiii afraid, though, there isu't
more tban five ceuts' worth in it. But
there are some old pieces in a chair
ther*>, that I threw by this morning,
and there will be some waste bits here
when I get through cutting.'
Tommy went hopefully to tho bed?
room closet The rag-bag icas rather
light, but he added the old pieces, scarce?
ly noticing in his eagerness that they
were not all so very old
Janie had laid her doll's white ^rcss
and ruffled skirt ou that very chair,
and her own best handkerchief, but
they were thrust into thc rag-bag with
Tommy's old pieces.
Then he went back and gathered up
all the shreds of calico his mother could
give him, aud put- in his slate-rag be?
sides.
Theu he weighed the rag-bag, and it
still fell short. He begged for a torn
towel ; he coaxed for a thin pillow-case,
and Jauie bestowed ou him an old
pinafore which really could not be
mended any more.
With all this he ran to Givcn's store,
and Mr. Given weighed the bag, emptied
the rags down through a trap-deur into
his cellar, and paid Tommy a dime,
which, added to the pcunies takcu from
his pocket, he at once invested in fire?
crackers. Then he went home proud
aud happy
The next day, when Mr. Givcn's
broad cellar-case doors stood open to let
in the air, little May Given slipped
down there to look at rags. Some?
times she found pretty bits there for
patchwork, which her father always let
her have.
TIus time, joy of joys! she found a
beautiful little skirt and dress winch
would just fit her- dolly, and a hand?
kerchief, too. Then May began to
think to hciself after this fashion :
*I s'posc some little girl broke her
dollie, and didn't want its things any
more. Stravagant girl she must bc;
might have saved 'em till she got a new
one ! Look just like Jauie Brown's
doilic's things, but site wouldn't put
'em in old rags, course not! Guess I
won't ask her. I'll ask my papa may
I have 'em, and then they'll be mine.'
So she ran and asked her busy papa,
who, without a glance, said yes, and
little May proceeded to dress her doll
up beautifully.
Fourth of Jul}' came, and there was
just as much banging and popping in
Tommy Brown's yard as in any boy's
yard in to wu, which was a great satis?
faction to his small heart. ,
In the afternoon little May Given
came strolling over with her doll, to ?
play with Janie But she found Janie j
very sober,
.? can't be happy at all. May,* she j
said. 'My doll's best dress U lost, and j
her ruffled skirt, and she has to wear
her nightie all the time ! I can't find ?
'eui anywhere, and it has made me cry !
two or three times Y
May began to bc sober now, and j
looked down at her doll doubtfully.
gMg dollie's got a new dress, and j
ruffled skirt, just like yours. Come out
of our rags, though, and papa gave 'cm j
to me. So they're r.vj things.'
.There, now !' exclaimed Janie ; !
.Tommy' been and sold my things in J
the rag-bag-I kuow he has ! Tommy ! j
Tommy !'
Tommy came up, and when he heard
the story, he was as sober as tho rest.
It looked very probable to bini that he
had sold Janie's doll-clothes in thc rag?,
lu fact, he had uo doubt of it.
.Wiil it make any di?Terhncc about,
the fire crackers Y he said. 'I've got
about ten left, and I can hand them
back to Mr. Given '
Thc sunshine came into little May's !
face. 'Oh no. you needn't Tommy !' j
she sai-', sweetly. 'Papa bought the ;
dollie things, and he gave 'em to me. |
Now they're mino, and I'll give 'em j
back to Janie. So now they're hers, j
don't you see ?'
They did see, and after this settlement
of the difficulty, thc sunshine was bright
in all three little faces.- Youth's Com?
panion.

Disease is an effect, not a cause. Iis origin
is within; its manifestations without. Hence,
to cure the the disease the cause must be re?

be eifected. WA RN EU'S SAFE KIDNEY
AND LIVER CURE is established on just
this principle. It realizes that

them in a healthy condition, drive disease
and pain from the system.
For the innumerable troubles caused by un?
