A MOTHER'S REVERIE.
Ia the quiet of my chamber,
When the daily tasks are o'er
And the voices bf the children,
Hushed in sleep, resound no more,
Conies the question, oft repeated,
"What this day have I divined
Of .the vast and wondrous workings
In the kingdom of the tnio'I ?"
What great thoughts have filled my vision,
Fired my soul with purpose high
From the wells of bidden knowledge

And my restless spirit answers.
In its unfulfilled desire,
Vainly have its ba?ed pinions
Sought the heights it* would inspire.
Int the lowly vale of duty
x,Bave I trod tue way along-,
Pausing not to call the flowerets,
? Nor to hear the wild-bird's song.
For life's burdens-be they light or
Be they heavy-must be borne,
And the rest is not lill ereaing
From the tasks begun at morn.
Yet, O patient, tired mother,
Is thore naught to cheer thy toil, ]
Canst thou not some treasures gather j
From the rich and faithful soil
Of the garden where thou plantest?
Which shall aid thy downcast eyes
To look upward to the summits
Of thy higher destinies.

was a member of a Christian church,

On the morning of the Sabbath one of

**Come, let us off for a drive and the
sights."
.'No," said the young man, 4iI am
'going to church. I have been brought
* isp to keep the Sabbath, and I have
promised my mother to keep on in that
way."
His road acquaintance looked at him
for & moment, and then, slapping him
00 the shoulder, said.
"Right, my boy. I began in that
Way. I wish I had kept on. Young
?an, you will do. Stick to your bring?
ing op and your mother's words, and
will win."
} ?he boy went to church, all honor to
him in that far-away place, and among
snob men. His companions had their
drive, but the boy gained their confi?
dence and won their respect by bis
manly avowal of sacred obligations.
Already success is smiling upon the
yoong man. There is uo lack of places
for him.
We predict for him the most promis?
ing results as the months fly and the
years wax and wauc. His is thc stuff
of which'thc Puritan-? were made, stur?
dy, tough, puissant in the best man?
hood. God bless him as he builds his
earthly fortone! God help him to sow
broadcast his conscientious convictions
Such yoong men arc in need for the
foundations of our new homes and our
Western civilization. We thank God
w"hen such 4'go West," and bear with
them, without a blush, thc religion of
oor blessed Lord. Ah, how much bet?
ter for hundreds of Western pioneers if j a
they had not broken faith with their j p
God. The young mea that go into the
mines and into the new places with a
godly atmosphere about iZ^tu "will do "
