'What T inquired Bess. *I don't know-I thought maybe that might be what the text meant,' said Gussie, slowly; 'sort of half doing things ; not giving quite so much as yon pretend to' Gussie stopped, afraid of offending the sister of whose superior gifts she stood greatly in awe; 1>ot Bess ou ly laughed as she answered, 'You do think : of the queerest things, Gussie ' That was what they all said of Gussie, but she kept on thinking. It was her day to dust the parlor. .I'M help you,' said Bess ; 'and then j you'll get through, so we can go for chestnuts.' 'Bat you don't do the corners, Bessie^ and you haven't moved any of the books,' said Gussie, as she watched - her sister's rapid whisks of the duster. ?What's the difference T said Bess It looks all right ; you s'pose anybody's, going to peek around after a speck of . dost? The next thing in order was to pick over the grapes for jelly, and even pa- j tient Gussie sighed over the big basket, bot, as usual, Bessie's part was com? pleted long before hers. 'I wish you could learn to be a little morenimple with your fingers, Gussie,' said her mother, and Bessie added, in an andertone, 'Ifs 'caase you fuss so ; 8'posin' a bad grape does go in now and then who's going to know it when they "re all smashed op "?' don't '.are/ said Gussie, feeling a little touched by her mother's criticism. 'I shan't have any balance 'bout my work, 'canse the Lord can tell a bad grape if ?tis smashed up. and it isu't the grape that matters, it's putting it io. 'I just wish, Gussie Maynard, you wouldn't talk any mote about that grocery man's text. It's just nonsense tryiug to make it Ot us.* But after all Bessie did not feel quite comfortable, and she went back and reamed the beginning of her lesson. 'There,' she enid, 'that's good, full weight and ? don't intend to bc a 'boai ioation any more.* Preaching. A plain farmer iu a country congrega? tion, over which was settled a very dull preacher, was on?c asked how lie managed to get along with his dominic. 'Oh, ^ .11,'was thc reply, *he aiut above us for one thing, and then he always preaches the gospel.' There is more in this reply than would appear at first. Too much of the preaching of our day is 'above' the people, and runs off from their ears.like water from a duck's back, and this not because tho speaker studies so hard, tut because bc does not study in the right way. lie does not take ;;.?ins to be so lucid and plain that his hearers must understand him. Daniel Webster used to address tnass-meefings in a political campaign in such a way that country people un? derstood him with ease. If a mau will make himself master of a sar jed and then set it forth with directness and simplicity, and without taking too much for granted as to the kuowledge of bis hearers, be will get and keep j their attention. But not a few are un? willing lo bestow the pains needed for this, and so their words go above the people and pass into the empty air. A^ain, it is certain, that^ it takes .a great deal of stupidity to kill t-he Gos? pel's power. Even accomplished theo? logians,, as Drs. Livingston or Archi? bald Alexander, who are af the same time truly devout and spiritual men, will s?t.undcr a series of 'distressing platitudes, and yet be refreshed. The tflitb, the precious truth of God, deliv? ered on his own day and iu his own house, comes to their ears, and how? ever wearisome its accompaniments, they rejoice in it as they that Sud great spoil. And so with many of lesser abilities. They get no intellectual stimulus, their minds are not r< used by new or fresh aspects of truth, yet famil? iar doctrines, precepts or promises are set before them, aud they absorb spirit? ual nutriment They get what they come for, another presentation cf old and familiar truth, and this feeds their souls They are not astonished with eloquence, orginality or force, but they have what is far better, such an utter? ance of the Word as quickens their j memories and warms their hearts - ' Christian Inteligenc.er. - - I > ll ll IIW - Oar Influence. Every spoken word, every outward act, is a help or a hindrance to those with whom we are associated. Every word or action sets iu motion a wave of influence which flows on into eternity. O that we fully realized this, that loug after .we have died and been forgotten, others will be guided iu certain direc- j tions and led to do certain things, j either'for good or evtl, because we to? day were patient and kind and honest and conscientious, or cross and dishon? est and wicked and faithless. We may live an outwardly reputable life, may? at last, by the mercy of God, reach heaven, while others, influenced by our example, may be forever lost, 'f?ow earnestly ought we to pray on this, the threshold of another year, that our lives may be so pure and true that otheis may *take knowledge of us as we follow Christ.
