The Icy End.
In tbe winter of 1873a man attempt
ed to cross the frozen surface of the
Merrimac. Wboo about ten feet from
the shore be broVe throogh. A work
man in a sawmill Dear by seized a plank
and thrust it oat to tbe drowning man.
Unfortunately, one end of the plank
was covered with ' ice, and that end
the workman in bis excitement extend
ed to the struggling man. He caught
bold of it several times, and tried to
pull himself up ou the solid ice. But
at each attempt his hand slipped and he
fell back into the water. At last, he
cried out, in the agony of terror:
'For mercy's sake! don't reach me
the icy end of tho plank V
A perplexed student once went to a
college professor for help in a certain
study, 4I am willing to help you/ the
professor said, with chilling courtesy,
"but of course, you know that my time
is fully occupied and that I can't give
special attention to every student.
What is your difficulty Y
The student stated what bad per
plexed him. *Ob, that's nothing 1'
answered the professor. 'You don't
need my, help to get you out of that
difficulty. Still, when you really need
assistance,. I will cheerfully give it to
yon. But you won't fotget that my
time is valuable.'
Tbe student bewed bis thanks
and departed, without^ receiving the
help be really needed. The icy end
of the plank was held out to bim.
From that day be bitterly, though un
justly'classed all tbe professors together
as cold and unsympathetic. He carried
this prejudice through bis college
course, because he had been denied a
little timely sympathy.
A few years ago a young minister
and bis wife began tbeir work in a
growing Western town. Tbe people
were attentive and courteous, the salary
was ample, and a new church edifice
was erected. But in less than a year
tbe minster and bis wife sought a small
er cburcb and a lower salary. A
friend, surprised at the change, asked :
'What was tbe matter ? ?idp't tbe
climate suit you Y
'Perfectly.'
* 'Well, wasn't your cburcb har

'Yes'
'You bad a fair salary T
'Yes: more than J get now.'
' Why did you leave, then V
'Because my wife and I were tired
of living in a^ moral refrigerator.
Every one was kind, but it was a
kindness wrapped up in ice, as if they
were afraid it 'would spoil. We bad
help enougb, but no real pympathy.'
Tbe icy end of the plank had been
extended to tbe minister and bis wife.

chased at Louisville, Ky., a very fine bred
colt, and in shipping be got his bock badly
hurt on the outside of the joint which caused
it to swell three or four times the natural
size, which made him very lame. I tried a
great many liniments which failed to benefit
the injured part. At last when disgusted,
and ready to give up the colt as ruined, I
happened to see yonr advertisement of "Ken
dall's Blister and Spavin Cure," and thought
I wonld give it a trial, I first applied the
"Blister" to the hock which by this time had
become calloused, and to my "surprise found it
work like a charm. In twenty fonr hours
the part that was hard became soft and tbe
lameless began to leave, I then got some of
"Kendall's Spavin Cure" and applied it ac
according to directions , which has made a
perfect cure, and the colt is uow as sound as
any horse alive. 1 merely write this letter to
you, as I think it a duty I owe to yon, and
also for the good of the public at large.
The foregoing statement I will make affi
davit to, and can also have the same verified
by the best horsemen in our city whosavr-^he J
