The above is the title of a monthly publi | cation, issued from Boston. Its mission is a warfare against cruelty to man or beast, and it contains much that will interest the thoughtful reader. . Our eyes happened to fell on thepaper, jusl after coming in from the street* where we had been a witness to a sick ening exhibition of cruelty on the part of a driver to his overloaded mule and we could not but regret that no society existed here for the arrest and punishment of such miscreants. What a pity that such comfortable rooms should be abused. - We would call attention to the article of oar correspondent -"J. S. O." on "Country Sociables." and say,~that while not cognizant of the facts mentioned in the communication so sharply criticised, yet, the position and j character of the writer was such, th:U we had j ?no hesitation in publishing it. The gallantry j of "J. S. C." in defending the ladies, is j worthy of all praise, but we think he is pret ty wide of the mark ip some of bis conclu sions, and were he to know the writer of the objectionable artic'e. bis surprise, we imag ine, would be equalled only by the amuse ment of the criticised party, when the letter we publish to-day is read. They are too well known in this com ; munity for it to be doubted that their guar | antee is worth the price of any article sold by j them. They have built up a reputation for j correct dealing, and are determin'd to main ! tain it. p Court. j The court was getting on swimmingly last week, and was busily engaged in sending j recruits to the State's boarding house on the i Congaree, when suddenly the whole bottom j dropped out. The judge, the lawyers, in ! fact the whole machine found out that there j was no jury, or that it was an illegal jury, ! and everything came to a dead halt. We are j no lawyer and of course do not understand j the technical flaw which has invalidated the [ jury panel, and if we were a lawyer we very ! much doubt if it would be understood much better, and so can only say that on Tuesday his Honor was compelled to discharge two j of the jurymen who were such fools or knaves j j as to be unfit for that important trust. It seemed to our unsophisticated eyes that the j j panel was much better without those repro- j I bates than with them, but such was not the | lease. *d& when the court was officially in- j formed of the maimed condition of that im- ; i portant factor in the administration of justice, i bis Honor had to stop everything, and the j I criminal business will lie over till next term, ; I much to the delectation of several evil doers J who were iu mortal dread of the eonsequeoce of tbetr wrong doing. This delay is much to ! be regretted, for punishment should follow crime as speedily as possible. But accidents will happen in the best regu'^ed families, j In consequence of this mishap, the case against Jos. Howard for murder, will lie over j till next term. Several other esses b>ive been postponed, among which the most not able were the whiskey indictments. The ! grand jury completed their work and was discharged on Friday. In addition to those whose sentences were published last week, the following persons j have beeu convicted and sentenced : Charles I Boyd, larceny, two years hard labor in peni- j tentiary; John Lynch,.*bduction, two years i hard labor in penitentiary or one thousand | dollars fine; Thomas Summers mid David Summers, assault, one yea;- in the penitenti ary to Thomas or one hundred dollars fine, and six months to David or fifty dollars fine. Col. J. J. Dargan, our solicitor, was pre vented by ill-health from attending court, and M?j.
