law which go unchecked in our midst would
soon be stopped if the Grand Jury should take
cognizance of them and bring them before
the courts.

the following cases: The State vs. Joe How
ard, for mnrder; vs. Bob Toney, burglary;
vs. Sam DeVeaux, burglary an* larceny; vs.
Van Buren Anderson, iarcei.y ; vs: Edward
Benjamin and EH Benjamin, larceny; vs.
Henry Williams, grand larceny; vs. Primus
McFaddin,assault with intent to kill; vs.
Cyrus Gourdin, fraud ; vs. Alpheus Sanders,
failure to perform road duty; vs. Thomas
Washington, burglary and larceny; vs.
Swepson H. Sanders, assault with intent to

and Bob Toney have been found guilty and
sentenced to hard labor in the Penitentiary;
the first two for one year each, and the other
for two years. The case against Joseph How
ard for murder has been set for Friday. H is
Honor is working with energy, but an un
usually heavy docket will keep the Court
busy toe entire week with criminal cases.
Flourishing Establishment.
Mr. J. D. Craig, onr furniture man, has
built np a flourishing business in Sumter, by
carefal attention to the details of bis work.
It has been-steadilyincreasing, until now it
has-grown into proportions much larger than
be could have anticipated in the past.
"A passer-by or casual visitor to bis store
will not get an idea of the large and varied
stock that he' keeps on ba?d. In order to
know what he has, it is necessary to go all
over his place?up stairs and out into his
waie-xooms?or which he has some four or
five?where different classes of furnjtare are
kept in balk, in regular systematic arrange
ment. The front establishment only contains
a small part of his regular stock, and is large
ly used as a sample-room of what he really
has, especially in the Hoe of chairs and ta
bles?there being only, one of each kind
shown, * .
Io the line of bedsteads alone, he has about
six-hundred, of various styles and prices,
ranging from $2.50 up, until you reach the
fioe Walnut sets. The undertaking depart
ment of bis busintss is really astonishing, em
bracing coffins of all sizes and prices from
the lowest price up to the elegant caskets;
and ? coffin can be supplied ready for use at
almost a moment's notice. His assortment of
bedding upholstery, picture frames, &c, is
very large, and purchasing his goods by the
car ioad reduces the first cost and freight
charges to the minimum, al! of which advan
tages he divides with bis customers, acd
parties in want of anything in his line should
look at his stock before ordering or buying
elsewhere, ?3 he can save them money.

At night, quite a large audience assembled
in the Presbyterian Church to listen to an ad
dress on temperance hy Rev. II. F. Chrietz
berg. The Presbyterian choir furnished de
lightful music. The lecture was highly
complimented by the* audience, many of
whom ' jgretted he did not speak longer.
Messrs. F. EL Folsoru k Bro. have received
some attractive goods in their line, and are
wailing for more before tbey make a formal

Hiss Lillian Spencer.
Miss Lillian Spencer will appear as "Cora,"
the Creole, in the drama called Article 47, at
the Music Hall, on Tuesday evening, Oct. 9tb.
It is one of the best plays ever presented in
Sumter, and no one should miss seeing the

Sell's Circus.
The great show comes to-morrow and so
will every one else. It is a wonderful exhi
bition of what can be done by an energetic
use of money. The Richmond Whig, in
speaking of the circus says 'bat everything
was shown and done that was advertised.
One of the most interesting features was the
bicycle riding by the Stirk family, and the
thousands who witnessed the various perfor
mances unite in the universal verdict that
Sells Brothers have the best show that has
exhibited io the South for many years. We
cut from the Review the following:
Sells Brothers' Circus and Managerie exhi
bited this afternoon and will give another ex
hibition to-night. Their enormous tents are
pitched on Dickinson's Hill, in the Northern
portion of the city, thither thousands hare
wended their way during the day. The com
pany made the usual street parade th is after
noon, much to the delight and amusement of
the throug of lookers-on who lined the side
walk of every street through which the im
posing pageaut passed. The procession was
very long and very fine consisting of 42 cages,
110 borseSj 9 elephants, 8 camel", 4 bands of
music, a steam piauo and other features to
give interest and effect to the display. The
performance under the canvass this afternoon
was witnessed by thousands and the general
expression seems to have been one of satisfac
tion. We cannot particularize as we go to
press almost simultaneously with the close of
the show but we saw enough of it to say that
Sell's Bros, carry out the advertised pro
gramme more scrupulously than any circus
show that has visited Wilmington since the
war.

The Keowee Courier came oat last week in
a brand new Sunday suit. It is getting on
into middle age, being nearly 35 years old.
We notice the name of Gen. Easley among its
former editors. Col. Robert A. Thompson
became editor and proprietor in 1853 and ex
cept one year has been connected with the
paper ever since?thirty years.
We are in receipt of the September number
of the Country Merchant, a journal devoted to
the interest of general merchandise, and well
filled with the thousand and one things which
are of importance to merchants. Published

A man purchased a piano for his daughter
recently, and the other day called on the
ageutand wanted to know when the "forte"
would be delivered. The piano had arrived
all right, but the "forte" had not yet been
