Miss Elliott as is well known wrote this hymn a upon bed illness, lament in g that as a confirmed, invalid, she j had not the power to do anything for j Christ. How many it bas since been j instrumental in bringing to Christ;! how many more it will be the means j of bringing to him in years to come ! j How little she foresaw the la.? tin g influ- j enee of her words, the effect of which j will never cease. Grief i Sorrows can be told, but grief is j voiceless. We feel it, but cannot speak j iL It finds oo solace io the crowded j streets or halls of fashion. Grief j buries itself in our deepest affections, j like the grave of its object. It listens | to the moaning night-wind as an echo j of its own voice. It is always-watch j lng for the face it shall never see. It j loves the silence of the night rather j than the bustle of the day. lt is en-' tranced by tbe music of the minor key. j How rare tbe home which knows it not! The more affectionate the home j the deeper the sorrow. Grief is always the child of love;! and its depth is measured by its silence. ! Tens of thousands look into tbe clear! sky every night and only the angels see i them. They who sing the sweetest io heaven, leave the saddest hearts ! here. Home has its glory in winter time; and the ioDg evenings are its crown ! O, ye whose eyes have beeo blinded and \ whose songs are hushed, the vacant clx< ir j shall make the long evenings longer, and ! their pleasures less real. Strange | that we never bear the sweet voice call i DOW! Strange that when we almost for- , get and speak the dear name, no an- j aver comes. And yet not strange. ? The houses of tbe dead outnumber those j of the living, and the mourners shall j always crowd our highways. The j streets of gold are better thao these . streets of snow. The mansions of God I are better than our mansions. The \ trees of heaven never st^pd with with- i ^eriog, falling leaves. Its river is iver fresen. The harps of the great ira ar?gjpcver broken ; the voices sing are never ^discordant; and us heightens their joy ; and our lore for tbein deepens our grief. Thus love and grief pow ever on earth from the same stock but joy sbali come in the eternal morning : and we shall then look back, evea as our loved ones arc now looking upon us, and almost wonder why we ever wept at all.-Golden Rule. A Word to Husbands. Has anybody ever written, upon tte responsibility which rests upon a ? husband with regard tu education ? of his wife? Of course wc know what j you will say about her being supposed j to have 'finished her education' before j marriage, and ail that ; and we all know ! she begins aa^ducatioo with him as new j as if she had never seen a'n alphabet. His j views, feelings and ideas are they noth? ing to her if she loves him ? * Years after when they who knew her as a girl come to talk with her as a matron, do j they not find her husband reflected in ' every sentence, either for good or ?yil? Of course the more strongly a woman loves the more completely is her identi? ty absorbed in that of her husband. This is a point that is too much neglect? ed by married men. A good husband is almost certain to have a good wife ; and j if she be not as good as be can wish, at j the commencement of their married life j he could educate her up tn the proper j mark. And. on the other hand, he can j educate her down so as to render his j house a purgatory, and perhaps bring on himself and family the. greatest agony and keenest disgrace which a husband can feel. Every converted man should be a -preacher of the gospel ; not from the pnlpit. but by the wayside, or from such position as each is called to fill. Common gratitude should prompt every one who has received the inestimable blessing of peace and pardon to pro I claim the fact : silence under such cir ; cu m ?:ances is ingratitude and sin. Tbe i desire to bring others into the same I blissful relations to God should incito j us in the same direction. When ?ne j hears the Saviour's voice saying. 'Thy j sins are forgiven thee,'the spirit that j prompts the question, 'Am I my broth ? er*8 keeper y takes its flight . and there j comes an earnest desire to bring in \ those who are without ; to seek and to save the lost. It is by proclaiming the truth, too. that one becomes rooted and grounded in the truth. Repeating the story intensifies it iu our own hearts I and makes it still more potent and precious. The proclaiming of ?he gos- j pel not only burns it into other souls j bat into your own also Tell the story j then, and repeat it o'er and o'er. A contented spirit" is the sweetness ? of existence Polishing the Wrong End.
