are right and good. They but show

Forgiveness.
Only where Christianity has been
molding the nations is forgiveness' re?
cognized as a manly and a no*ble virtue.
Among savages and half civilized tribes
revenge is incalcolated as a religions
duty, and family feuds are often kept
up for generations. Especially is this
the case among some tribes of Arabs,
who seem to live for revenge more than
for any other purpose ; and we are sur?
prised that in some sections of our own
laud the ?ame hellish fires of revenge
are burn l?g. Can we not keep before
us the spectacle of our crucified Lord
praying for his murderers ; and ought
we not inherit hts spirit as did the
martyr Stephen ? Remember that we
are told, 'If any man have not the
spirit of Christ he is none of his ; and
judged by this rule, there are some
church membrrs who will be excluded
in the last day. We have known pro?
fessors of religion who cannot partake
of the Lord's Supper because they are
not ia love and charity with their neigh?
bors ; and they will rather disobey the
solemn command, 'Do this in remem?
brance of me,' than to obey the call of
God to forgive. Au unforgiving spirit
shuts one off from communion with
God, and deprives the soul t of its rest
in Christ. Such an one dare not re?
peat the Lord's Prayer, for if they utter
'Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us,' they
virtually pray that Biviue forgiveness
be withheld. They court the wrath
of Almighty God that they may exhi?
bit their puny wrath against his crea?
tures. And what good does it do ? If
it secured any personal happiness or
future good, if it even brought material
prosperity, it might find some apology ;
but it makes men miserable, and is ex?
ercised often at great personal risk and
cost. They most resmble their divine
Lord who are ever ready to forgive, and
at least among Christian men, Paul's
command, 'Be not overcome of evil,
but ovorcome ev# with good,' ought to

Which reminds me of a letter shown me the
other day by Hiscox & Co., of New York,
?igned by Mr. E. C. Williams, of Chapman,
Snyder Co., Pa., a prominent business man
of that place. He writes :
"I have suffered with Asthraafcr over forty
years, and hnd a terrible attack in December
?nd January, 1882. I hardly know what
