rom mmmr MORALS AND PHILOSOPHY. Kev. a C. BROWN, Editor. V. : POSSESSIONS. ST W. W. HOLLOWAY JR. Wt new CM entirety los? What wehave oece had grate to ase Or wbftTvtVer fore betd as all oar own. The ta? io. beeres shines sparkling bright, 'And theo is dimmed by shades of nigh': Bat eli the world ? richer that it shone. Tb? towera ?tve their sweet perfume, Aaft ?8 too seo? they drop their bloom : Sss lil? is happier that they once hare grow?. WUk pleasant dreams we laugh in sleep, Thea wake to ton, perchance to weep, But dressa? will cheer though they bare Sown. The frieocs whose presence was so sweet, Depart ia death-so more we meet : Tis sot sa if their tare bad been unknown. Think this when thou dost mooro thy loss, Th? wares of t ime may sarge and toss, Bett they CSA never wrest from thee thine ow?! The Light on Little Graves. It ts very bard to become reconciled to thc death of little children eren if they aro not jour own. It seems so ajajch like the erssbiog and withering of bods of promise that the haman heart naturally rises op ? protest against Jest across tho narrow space that two city dwellings, and al? ^within reach of the hand that these Hoes, since early antonin of a little boy that looked like one of Raphael's ch erubs, had peered above tho window-sill, cheery as a ray of early son? and thrown its light into th? neighbor's house. Bot for two woeks the sweet face with its pleasant sssEe that Kt sp the.golden bair like a kai* of glory, did not press the pace and the dimpled hand did not throw the liss of morai og greeting. Little Cferecee ?as sick, and a fe? days ago they hore his preci?os form away in a ?hita casket to it? boris!. Tho story may bc an old-a repre? sented ono. ., "There is no fold however tender, Bnt one dead lamb is there." Bot ?o cannot get used to this. It is no comfort: to a lend mother to know tba* other people*? children have di^d. T?hc*may help the bond of sympathy, ont it only increases the sadness to think of the sweep death makes. Yet there is a very beauteous light situating from little graves. It comes soi from anything earthly, for that; would bc bot a phosphoric ray of cor motion. No, the beams of hope and joy must be from above. The little OBOS go to heaven, not because they cte children,'but because the death tad resurrection of Christ avails for them, in that relation to the Redeem er of the world, the 'early bat' become the 'early saved/ Death is not a grim destroyer hst a harvester. Through it God takes the lovely flo were as well as corn ripe in the ear. And "to faith there is no music floating over the little world of comes and sepulchres more sweet than the Canticle which says, .My beloved is gone down into his gar? den to gather lilies.' The Kves of little children have not bes? is vain. The world has been brighter to us, for the song they sang, though they 'teemed to linger but a lit? tle ?bile ere they winged their way Hke thc soaring lark, over the fading rainbow into the blue .heavens. Rut OAT chief joy is in knowing that they ar? sot lost, but gone before. Not osly (bsd parents, but neighbors and pastors remember them, as those they loved, and hoped to meet again. And they will be restored to us. not as an? gels-another order of beings, but as our o?n precious darlings, glorified in Christ Jesus. Thoughts of these and of alt our own dear ones of whatever age, make ss anxious for the coming of the Lord ?bes-the lutes of salvation sill blend harmoniously with the trum petings of the resurrection,-The Mes Well Built Christians. A ?efl built Christian is harmonious is all his parts. No one trait shames another, fie is not a jumble of incon? sistencies-to-day liberal to one cause, to-morrow niggardly toward another ; to-day fluent in prayer and to-morrow fluent is polite falsehoods, He does not keep the fourth commandment on Sunday and break the eighth on Mon? day, He docs not shirk an honest debt to make a huge donation. He is sot io favor of temperance for other folk and a glass of toddy for himself. He docs not exhort or pray at each of the few meetings bc attends to make np arrearages for the meetings which he neglects. Be does not so consume his spiritual foci during revival sea soot that be is as cold as Nova Zesnbht during all thc rest of the Ibo Bight Kind of Pride. A yoong ssas 'that works for his boyd/ no matter ?bat honest work he -dons, has so reason for shame. A yoong osan ?ho eats the bread of idle scat, no matter bo? much be has, is disgraosd. All men, starting in life, ought to aim first of all, to find a place ?sere they can ears their bread and botter ??tba hoe, ax, spade, wheel-bar? ro?, curry-comb, blacking-brush-no Stutter ho?. Independence first. The bread-and-bot ter question settled, let the yoong man perform bis duty so faith folly as to attract attention, and let sim constantly keep his eye open for a thence to do better. About half the poor, proud young men, and two-thirds of the poor discouraged yoong men, are always out of work. The young who pockets bis pride and keeps a stiff up? per lip, need not starve, and he stands j n chance to become rich, if be cares to. h Christian is one who loves God and keeps bis commandmects. Love, ibes? it ? not a mere sentiment, a feel? ing ; it is principle, the principle of a | ne? lifo which bolds the life true to it-1 self? troc to duty, true to mao, trne to ! God. *If ye love me, keep my com- j man dm en ts.' A usan never knows what a weak, fickle and uncertain master he has in himself until he is at liberty to govern his ovo lifo and do as bc pleases. To Wives and Mothers. Keep your face, your heart, and your home bright. Don't let the cobwebs gather in the corner of the pretty sitting room, or dost accumulate on the furni? ture till you can write jour name j thereon. No matter what is on hand i or how much you have to do, take time ; at least once a day to tidy your rooms and gather fresh flowers. Yon will never regret it, even though at the close of life yon may not possess quite so much of the world's goods as some of your neighbors. It is the best plan by far to enjoy life as it comes, and this jon can never do to a slovenly, di sor* dered home. Would yon keep yonr husband from evil associations and your children from wayward paths? Remember there is nothing in this world so attractive to a man as a pleas? ant home and a smiling face therein ; anti as for the little feet, they will mt be apt to wander far, so long as your face beams with the love and solicitude a mother is a queen always, not of va*t that yonr heart bears for them. A wife or domains, to be sure, and not of sooiety, but of the most sacred spot on earth to every bnman heart-home. You nev? er thought of it perhaps, bot it is true ; and it is true also that there is a no more pitiable sight than one of these queens who does not, either from want of judgment, or lack of will, gov? ern her subjects aright. Did yon ever see a truly happy family without a lov? ing, watchful, and affectionate wife and mother at its head ? The father may be sour? hard, or cross-grained, bot if the mother is all right, there is sure to be happiness in that family. m i i ir Diamonds in the Fire. A set of diamonds in the fire caused a panic in a lady's breast recently. A Pennsylvania journal states that a short time ago a gentleman and his wife we;e staying in a hotel at Harrisburg. Penn? sylvania. Before retiring the lady wrapped ber diamoud earings, valued at ?1,000, in tissue paper, and placed them on the bureau. Next morning, after completing her toilet she was ar? ranging tbiug8 on the bureau, and, see? ing the tissue paper picked it np and threw it into the open grate. As she did so it flashed through ber mind that her diamonds were wrapped in the paper and she made a snatch for it as the blaze caught and consumed it. One of the ear-rings was polled out with the blaz? ing paper, but the other remained in the midst of the red-hot coals. The lady, forgetting her pain, picked the jewel from ?he fire with ber fingers, burning them considerably. The dia? monds were rescued in time, thanks to the lady's promptitude and courage ; but the gold setting was spoiled. This kind of heedlessness is going on in many families where the existence of something far more precious than dia? monds is involved. Mothers are throwing their children into the fire of temptation from which, when they realize the danger, they cannot rescue them, even though they brave personal peril themselves. (1 Sam. 3:13.) Christian Herald. --mw*- M - *The very word humanity,' says Max Muller,'dates from Christianity.' No such idea, and, therefore no such term, was found among men before Christ came. The true Christian is like the sun, which pursues his noiseless track and, everywhere leaves the effect of his beams in a blessing upon the world around ; bim. Revenge is a momentary triumph, in I which the satisfaction dies at once, and i is succeeded by remorse ; whereas for- j giveneas, which is the noblest of all re-1 venge, entails a perpetual pleasure. j Youth and age have too little sym- j pathy with each other. If the young ; wonld remember that they may be old. j and the old would remember that they j wore once young, thc world would be j happier. Banish the pagan thought that rest : is a concession to human weakness, or j that one must be weary before he bzs a ? right to rest. Resting is divine. It is ! a condition of well being, of fruitful j work. If I am between two moral evils, I will not bave either. A man is not to lie to save from the necessity to steal nor to break the Sabbath, lest he should not be able to pay his debts. Never choose to do wrong. A present heaven is enjoyed by every one in whom is truly set up that kingdom of G"d which is righteous? ness, peace, and joy in the Holy j Ghost. These are the essential ele- j ments of spiritual felicity in all ? worlds. A little Swedish girl, while walking I with her father on a starry night, absorbed in contemplation of the skies, being asked of what she was thinking, replied : 'I was thinking if the wrong ! side of heaven is so glorious what must i the right be.' Disease is an effect, not a cause. Its origin is within; its manifestations without. Hence, to cere the the disease the cause must be re? moved, and in no other way can a cure ever i be effected. WARNER'S SAFE KIDNEY ! AND MYER CURE is established on just ' this principle. It realizes that 95 Per Cent. of all diseases arise from deranged kidneys: and liver, and it strikes at once at thc root of 1 the difficulty. The elements of which it is' composed act directly upon these great organs, ? both as a food and restorer, and, by placing ! them in a healthy condition, drive disease j and pain from the system. Fer the innumerable troubles caused by un- ( healthy Kidneys, Liver and Urinary Organs; fat tbe dt8tiessing Disorders of Women ; for ? Malaria, and for physical derangements gen- ! era]ly, this great remedy bas no equal.
