On last Friday night when Dr. Garmany and bis oldest son were going home, and near his residence on Washington- street, they were suddenly assaulted by two negroes, who sprang ont from behind a tree. One of the negroes, who was recognized as John Howell, and with' whom young Garmany had had j some words down town that evening, pre j seated and snapped a pistol, against bim, and i the other negro straek Dr. G. with a stick. I Yoong Garmany closed with Howell, and j knocked bim down, and fell on bim; but i failed in secnring him, and both the assail I ants becoming alarmed took to flight, j- A warrant bas been issued for Howell : j but he has not yet been arrested. Good Templars. j We were unable to attend the open-door j meeting of the Good Templars, last week, but j bve been kindly furnished by a friend wbo [was there with the following : r rn accordance with previous notice, ?. ?. ? G. W. C. Templar, j Cbrekrberg officiated, and the officers were ! duly installed and entered upon their duties. P. G. W. C, Templar, Cuttino, gave an in I teresting account of the actings and doings ? of the G. W. Lodge held lately in Spartan I burg, and Bro. Cbreitzberg interested the au i dience with a stirring aud eloquent address {all along on the "prohibition" line! The j evening was passed in a truly enjoyable manner, and a frequent return of'such op? portunities will do much to enlighten public j sentiment in regard to the "crime of crimes " The following officers were installed : . The S. I>. I. Pie Nie. . j On last Friday morning, the 4th, the S. j L. I., and their guests embarked on the train j of the Central R. R. at 8.45 A. M., bound for i "Vernon," to celebrate their Anniversary } with a basket pic nie, which had been post J poned oh account of the inclemency of the i weather. i j To say that the day was propitious would j but faintly express the grandeur of that j bright May morning-a more beautiful day j never dawned. Not a cloud could be seen: j the trees with their covering of new leaves I seemed prettier and of a brighter green than j ever ; the birds vied with each other in song, ! and nature seemed endeavoring to make j amends for the many disappointments of the j Tuesday before. j After a pleasant ride with that prince of j conductors, Mr. J. Rhett Motte, the Company i debarked at a temporary platform in an old j field just ba?k of the pic nie grounds. Here j had been erected a welcome arch, surmount- ! t ed with tbe initials "S. L. I.," and from this i i ? arch to the house, where the dance-halls had j . - - .. \ . *. .. -; - ^t?. . ] been prepared, a road had been cut fully a j quarter of a mile, along which the party ! ! wended their way. The grove in front of the ! house had been cleared np, and temporary j seats prepared. All theee preliminary ar- j : rangements, from the arch to the house, were j tbe work of that whole-souled'friend and ac- j I complished gentleman-that gallant ex-Con ! federate soldier and patriotic citizen, Mr. j j Arthur Harri n. i Arrived at the house, a hearty welcome I was extended by the estimable lady of the { big-hearted gentleman already referred to, I surrounded by some of Clarendon's and Sum? ter's fairest daughters, who had gathered to welcome the party from Sumter. To describe the doings of the day would take the pen of a readier writer. Suffice it to j say that the dancing was good, the shooting j was fair, and tbe dinner fit for the Gods, j Men never behaved more gallantly, or women were never sweeter or prettier than those as? sembled at Vernon. The prizes for shooting were won and presented as follows : First prize, a silver cup, won by Sergt. F. J. O'Connor and presented in behalf of the Sumter Light Infantry by Mr. Arthur Har vin; second prize, the "Gates medal," won by Color-bearer W.H. Cuttino and presented by Capt. D. J. Auld ; third prize, the ,;Sulz bacher medal," won by Private C. P. Osteen and presented by ex-Lieut. Marion Sanders ; fourth prize, tbe "Tin Cup," won by Sergt. Henry Barnett and presented by Lieut. Bart? lett in a humorous and laughter-provoking speech. The visitors prize, a beautiful chased butter knife, was won by W. C. Reames, and pre ' ?^oted by ex-Ca A. W. R. Delgar. j Before leaving for home a resolution was t unanimously adopted expressing the heartfelt J thanks of the S. L. I. to Mr. Arthur Harvin ! for bis great kindness in preparing the j grounds so handsomely, and for many other j favors. I The slight delaying of the return train in I the afternoon only lengthened the stay at j Vernon, and added to the pleasures of the ? day. Everything passed off well, nothing i occuring to mar, in the slightest, the enjoy j ment of tbe party, and at candle-light every j body was at borne again, proclaiming that I tbe S. L. I. pic nie was a decided success. Just received a beautiful- lot of Glass, Butter and Preserve dishes for 25 cents and upwards at Sca&Vs. ? Handsome Monument;. A very handsome monument has recently been erected over the grave of the late P. J O'Donnell in the cemetery adjoining the Catholic Church in this place, which is worth going to see. It is the work o? Messrs. C. Mayhew & Son, and is from their Florence yard. The base ?3 of a light grey Granite, from their quarry near Winnsboro, and the balance of the monument is of dark Italian Marble, with a gloss finish from top to base. The style is Gothic, and different from any monument we have seen about here. A large block which bear3 the name and inscription, rests upon a second base and is surmounted by four columns supporting an arch termi? nating with a shaft bearing a cross-the en? tire monument being about twelve feet high. The name and inscriptions are in parti}' raised and partly sunken letters artistically cut ; and upon the front of the second base the name "O'Donnell" is cut in large capital raised letters. The job is certainly a very handsome one, and Messrs. Mayhew ?fe Son can refer to it with pride as a specimen of their work. They are prepared to do any work in their Hoe, and have their headquarters in this State at Columbia, with a branch at Florence. Business communications addressd to them at either place will receive prompt attention. Their card will be foand in another column. * -??-??? -- Why buy a pattern when you can get your dress cnt bythe Dressmaker's Magic Scale Co. for what the pattern costs you ?
