The Meeting of Harmony Presby

- V.
[Cor. New* and Conrier.J
MAMO?, April 7.-Harmony Presbytery
met pnrsnant to adjournment at this
place on the 4th inst., and was opened with
a sermon by the Rev. James McDowell, of
Manning. Seventeen ministers and twenty
nine elders were present. The Rev. J. L.
McLin, of Hart s vii le, waa elected Moderator
and the Rev. E. G. Smith, of Mars' Bluff,
temporary clerk. The Marion Church, in
which the Presbytery is meeting, was organ?
ized in 1851. Its membership is small, but
it embraces five lawyers, two of whom are
Chancellor Johnson and the Hon. J. T.
Walsh. Harmony Presbytery embraces ten
counties, forty-one churches and about twen?
ty-seven hundred members. It has under its
care eight candidates for the ministry and
two licentiates.
A* greater part of the second day was spent
in bearing reports from the churches. These
reports show an increase during the past year
of 185 members. The Rev. W. B. Corbett of
North Carolina, was received into the Pres?
bytery. He is preaching to the Bennetts
rille and Marion Churches. Calls were sent
np to Presbytery from the Midway Bethel and
Brewington churches for the pastoral ser
rices of Licentiate S. E. Bishop. Calls
were also, sen t np from tue Lynchburg, Ben
lab and.Fair Hope churches for' the services
sf the Rev. H. B. Garriss. These calls were
iccepted, and;: the Rev. Messrs. McDowell,
Sregg and McKay were appointed to instal
Mr. Garr?s pastor of said churches.
The singing dflrir.p the meeting, under the
?nduct of Mr. ^T. Walsh and. his accom?
plished daughter, Miss Jennie, the organist,
tribu ted very mo ch to the pleasure of the
occasion. Among the more prominent dele?
gates present were Judge Fraser af Sumter,
Sen. Prince of Cheraw, J. P. ?tase of Flor?
in ce, and Dr. J. B. Jennings of Ben net ts
rille.
The next stated meeting of the Presbytery
will be held in Mount Zion Church, Sumter
County, the second week in October.
Humpty Humpty.
Oar readers who want to enjoy a hearty
laugh are advised to keep in mind that Hew?
lett's Humpty Dumpty will play in Music
Sall next Friday night. The Wilmington (N.
C.) Star says of its appearance in that city.
"Tfie performance of Humpty Dumpty at
the Opera House yesterday afternoon and
?vening, by Rob. A. Hewie!te's Compa ny was
t most agreeable disappointment and through-,
?ut a decidedly laughable and enjoyable en?
tertainment. A noticeable feature was the
.tage management, which eleverly rushed
?verything through on time without the nu?
merous hitches and painful stops so usual in
ill affaire of this kind. Starting with this we
must next commend Mr. Hewlette's most
clever impersonation of the -Clown, upon
which part the entire success of the panto?
mime rests. Mr. Hewlette possesses real ap?
titude and ability, and did 'himself great
credit.. Of the specialties, Renaldo's contor?
tion act was a difficult and really wonderful
performance. Mart Daniel's . performance on
the harmonica m and bis clever imitations with
a common lead pencil were features that
pleased, and his song and dance won bim a
deserved encore. Rob. A. Hewlette's perfor?
mance on the Wire, given outside of the
Opera House, was really marvellous; and as
good as we have ever seen. His inside per?
formance waa cut short by the giving away
sf the sill of the box to which one "end of the
wire was fastened, but it was understood at
ance and the performance went oo as if noth?
ing had happened. Miss Devere's singing and
lancing was excellent. The other attractions
were rery good.
The audience was the largest at the Theatre
in months, and vociferously expressed its ap- j
proval and appreciation of the presentation of
the pantomime.
The troupe gave a first-class performance,
md well deserve the liberal patronage they
ire everywhere receiving.
