No trait of character is more valua
ble io a wife than possession of a sweet
temper. Home can never be made hap
py without it. It is like flowers that
spring up in onr pathway reviving and
cheering as. Let a man go home at
night, wearied and worn out by the
toils of the day, and bow sweet is a
word dictated by a sweet disposition !
It is sunshine falling on his heart. He
is happy, and the cares of life are for
gotten. A sweet temper has a soothing
influence over the mind of the whole
family. < When it is found in the wife
and mother, yon observe kindness and
love predominating over the natural
feelings of a bad heart. Smiles, and
kind words and looks characterize the
children, and peace and love have their
dwelling there. Study then to acquire
and retain a sweet temper.
Fear in Children,
No pain is more dreadful to endure
than fear. Few parents realise how much
their children suffer from this cause.
'There is nothing to hart you/ is an
assurance which does not allay the ap
prehension. An undefined something,
existing often only in the imagination,
is the occasion of just as real suffering
as the most tangible evil should be.
This suffering from fear has much to
do with the almost universal dislike
which children have of going to bed.
They are left alone in some chamber,

ment so far as quietness is concerned
and judicious only if the child exhibits
no fear. But only those who remem

alone in the dark, can fully realize the

punished for crying when put to bed

in Alaska, draws a gloomy picture of
the intemperance among the natives.
'The Indians will give away wife and
children, he says, 'to obtaio liquor, and
their carousals are so fierce and reckless
that murders and suicides are frequent

the Alaska Indian is not far off.
