In that day, with the strength of his
arm he will scatter the proud in the
imagination of their hearts, and put
down the mighty from their seatb to
exalt them of low degree. Then will
he raise up the poor out of the dost and
lift up the beggar from the dung-hill to
set them among princes and to make
them inherit the throne of glory. Put
on humbleness of mind, and it shall
prepare yon to share the bliss, life and
glory of the redeemed.
Every Moment Brings Its
Mercy.

many troubles. Every day something
happens to annoy them. Grant that
|> evils befall us every day. If every
day brings its evil, every moment
fe?^~i>rings its mercy. Hence we have
more reason to be thankful than to
complain.
Every moment brings its mercy. It
is a mercy that we are at this moment
on the earth and not in hell. Nothing
?mt mercy fcas kept us herc with the
}fM?:... means of grace.
It is a mercy that we have not been
permitted to backslide and bring a re?
proach on the cause of Christ.
It is a mercy that we are in a Chris?
tian land, safe from persecution, and
surrounded by the means of growth in
holiness and of doing good.
It is a mercy that we have an open
Bible, and are able to read it, and thal
we have so many aids to correct inter?
pretation of its pages.
It is a mercy that we have pious
friends to watch over us and pray foi
H _ ns ; to reprove and encourage us tc
persevere in the straight way.
It is a mercy that we are permitted
to be laborers in the Lord's vineyard,
and that we know that our labor is not
in vain in the Lord.
It is a mercy that we may deny our?
selves and take up the cross for Him
?> who bore our sins in his own body on

with those that rejoice, and weep with
those who weep, and comfort those who
mourn.
It is a mercy that we are permitted
to cast our burdens on the Lord instead
of bearing them ourselves.

*I bave read a grear, many books on
the evideuces of Christianity, and most
of tbe arguments in them I can answer
satisfactorily to icy own mind. But
the change I bave seien in the life of
my little daughter in a year or two
past I cannot explain. There is evi?
dence of some power working in her
which I can not understand/ This
was, in substance, the expression of a
father concerning his daughter of four?
teen or fifteen years of age, who bad
recently made a confession of her faith
in Christ. The father was not a Chris?
tian, and was, indeed, inclined to what
is erroneously termed 'free thought/
A man of more than average mental
ability, he could -meet arguments ad?
dressed to the intellect, but he did cot
know how to resist the power of a
child's life of faith. May that child's
life lead him to the Saviour. But let
us all ask ourselves, what are men
r?adiog in our lives ? We are 'living
epistles, whether we will or no. Tbe
important question ?is, what are men
reading in us ? Is it of the power of
Christ working in us ?

A Cheerful Home.
sisgie^bitter word may disquiet an
entire family for a whole day. One
surly glance casts'a gloom over the
household, while a smile, like a gleam
of sunshine, may light up the darkest
and weariest hours. Like unexpected
flowers which spring up along our path,
full of freshness, fragrance, and beauty,
so the kind words, and gentle acts, and
sweet dispositions make glad the home
where Christ's peace and blessing dwell.
No matter how humble the abode, if it
be thus garnished with grace, and
sweetened with kindness and smiles,
the heart will turn longingly toward it
from all the tumults of the world ; and
home, if it be ever so homely, will be
j the dearest spot beneath the circuit of
the sun.
And the influences of home perpetu?
ate themselves. The gentle grace of
the mother lives in her daughters long
after her head is pillowed in the dust of
! death, and fatherly kindness finds its
echo in the nobility and courtesy of
sons who come to wear ibis mantle and
to fill his place ; while, on the other
hand, from an unhappy, misgoverned,
and disordered home, go forth persons
who shall make other homes miserable,
and perpetuate the sourness and sad
cess, the contentions, the strifes, the
railings,* which have made their own
carliy lives-so wretched and distorted.
Toward the cheerful home the chil?
dren gather 'as clouds, and as doves to
their windows,' while from the home
which is the abode of discontent and
strife and trouble, they fly forth as vul?
tures to rend their prey.
The class of men that disturb and
disorder and distress the world are not
til ose born and nurtured amid the hal?
lowed influences of Christian homes ;
but rather those whose early life has
been a scene of trouble and vexation,
who have started wrong in the pilgrim?
age, and whose course is one of disas?
ter to themselves and of trouble to
those around them.
A good temper generally comes from
thorough breaking and discipline.
The death hour is a high point of
observation, from which one obtains a
clear view of both worlds.

If the thought of dying were oftener
before us, sinful things would lose their
deceitful influence.

I renew daily my covenant to become
j altogether Christ's and to watch every
moment, that I may cot lose one op?
portunity of doing good to the souls of
men.
