Somehow,' said the engineer,'every
thing worked like a charm. As ?

conductor's lantern was in the air in a

Everlasting Flowers.
Eadv in the spring of the year I
came to England for borne affairs that
required, my presence. ?. weut to
London, intending to regain a fort
night, winch would complete the matter
for which I bad been summoned, and
then to. proceed into the country.
A few days after my arrival, how
ever, I was seized with severe illness.
My couch was in a small apartment on
the ground floor looking in the street.
A longiug for that which was denied
me came to disturb yet more that of in
action. " I craved for the fresh pure
air of the country. There was nothing
sinful in desiring the fresh air, you will
say. There is sin in a rebellious desire
for what is denied, (Proverbs xxiv. 9 ;)
a lack of subjection, a lack of love. The
crfiss was galling, and I wanted it
changed, before it had borue fruit.
I closed my eyes. Visioos of green
woodlands and mountain paths rose be
fore me, and last of all, the childish
memory of a river, with every bend of
which I was familiar. Its banks were
fringed with flowery sedges, and on its
bosom blossomed the white water lilies;
the very ripple of the water for a mo
ment seemed conjured back by my
heated imagination. A brother or
sister might upbraid me ; but let me fall
into the hands of the Lord, for he is
pitiful and of tender mercy ; he remem
bered I was dust. My brain throbbed ;
I tried vainly to rest my loogiog vision
elsewhere, and turned heavily on my
pillow. Through the open window,
round the corner of the street, came
distinctly to my ear a low monotonous
cry.; It was from an old man who sold
wreaths. Clearly his voice rang through
the still street, 'Everlasting flowers!

I raised my head and listened, for to
my sad heart the words sounded as
though from heaven,Teminding me that
this was uot uiy rest. There was no
mistake. The words came again dis
tinct and clear, 'Everlasting flowers !

The man had unconsciously delivered
-his heavenly message. The fountain of
ray tears was unsealed ; the scales fcii

riding along a familiar road with a gen
tle horse. To gratify his child the
father placed the reins in his hands,
but at the same time, unseen, retained
his own hold onv them. As they rede
