A Narrow Escape.
An attempt was made last week to take the
life of Mr. DeSaussure Bull, of Statebnrg
Township, by means of poison. Mr. Bull is
the owuer of a saw-mill a^d employs a num
uer of banes. His attention was called to
the steak which was prepared for breakfast
on one morning last week, by the cook, who
said "it did not taste quite right," and in?
duced him not to eat it. A piece was given
to a dog, wliich it killed, and tbe remainder
was brought to Sumter and on examination
proved to contain strychnine. Two ounces
of the meat produced convulsive twitchiugs
in !*. dog in seventeen minutes, and caused
his death in two and a half hours. It has
been iearned that a negro fron Stateburg
bought a drachm of strychnine from the drug
store of Dr. A. J. China, on the 2d instant,
and another drachm from Dr. J. F. W.
DeLorme two days afterward. No arrests
have been made as yet.
