Dock Tait, a colored man employed as sight watchman at Mr. Wm. Epperson's mill, ? in-Clarendon County, was burned to death on 1 Friday sight. He was found in the pit used for burning slabs. Being subject to epilepsy iu he .was supposed to have fallen iu during an 1 attack of that kind. I Dr. Ed Solomons was summoned by tele r graph a few days ago to go to New York to attend the trial of his suit against the parties who violated their contract for the manuf?c \ ture of his machines. Mr. A. S. Brown had the misfortune to lose his gin house, by fire, on Friday morning, together with his gin and attachments and ten bales of cotton, and three thousand bushels j ( of cotton seed. The-loss amounts to about fifteen hundred dollars. There was no in surance on the property. Mr. Chas. H. Singleton and Miss Anna . Walsh, daughter of Col. T. V. Walsh, were married on Thursday night last, by Rev. C C. Brown. Quite a large company of seventy-five or more friends were invited to witness the ceremony, and what with the good supper and the gay talk and the high spirits the young folks had a pleasant evening. Our best wishes attend the young couple in their new career. Maj. M. B. Moses will leave on Saturday, to attend the golden wedding of bis parents which will take place at Newberry oa Moo day next. He will return on the Wednesday I following. Those who may be inconvenienced by his temporary absence from his office will doubtless ezcc.se him on the grounds of the .' extreme j-iftsquency of his trips. The Annual County Fair which will be held next week will doubtless attract a large attendance. Ample arraogements are being 4'made by^he_officers for the care of the exbib jap-nke accommodation of spectators. As tflfe time draws near every indication points to the perfect success of the coming exhibition. 'A letter, seat to Capt. Cordes, last week expressing regret at bis resignation* es agent at the Depot and containing complimentary testimonials of bis worth as a business man and citizen was signed by a large number of our merchants. There has been a general :'change of base" i on Main Street. H. Schwerin has moved to I the stand formerly occupied by Bultman : Bros:, who now occupy their new building; I. Solzbacher, takes Mr. Schwerin's place and ' J. E. Snares takes the entire building which ? was partly occupied by Mr. Sulzbacber. Of ' course they have all prepared for a large bus iness. Look out for their advertisements. - We are in receipt of the first number of the " Out Look a new venture in Journalism iu New York City. It is a weekly paper published on Saturdays, edited and published by color ed men. Its principles are Democratic. The provisions of the Constitution require that the chief executive officer of a county shall be chosen at a popular election; but the recol lections of the dajs when the tax-collectors were elected by the people, and the fact that the County Treasurer and Auditor, in the discharge of their duties, touch the hearts of the people through the "pocket nerve," may account for the position taken by many coun ties in this State in making recommendations, through their conventions and primaries, of suitable persons for these responsible positions. What will Somter County do in this matter? Will she leave it to the Delegation, now about to be elected, to make the recommenda tions? We assume that these gentlemen are not anxious to assume this responsibility, as they will, in all probability, have enough of other matters to shoulder, without burdening themselves with the personal antagonisms of disappointed candidates for these positions. It might be unnecessary to call a conven tion to consider this matter, but the Execu tive Committee of the Democratic Party, com posed, as it is, of a Delegate from every com munity, is, we contend, a more representative body than the members of the Legislature. Their recommendations would give less cause for complaint than those of the gentlemen composing the Sumter Delegation. The committee cannot of course assume this privilege, contrary to the custom in this Coun ty ; but, will not the gentlemeu of the Delega tion surrender 10 the Committee this privi lege? and should it prove an apple of discord, "Thou canst not say that I did it," would be their happy refrain. JACOB. A CARD. Mr. Editor .- It has come to my knowledg: that I am among the nominees upon the "Greenback Labor Ticket" recently nomina ted at Somter. I desire to say that the use of my name was without consultation with me, and without authority. However gratifying it might be to have the endorsement of all of my fellow-citizens, yet as-the regular nominee of the Democratic party, I cannot consent even to appear as aid ing, encouraging or acquiescing in any move ment intended to overthrow the only political party which has brought honor and peace to the State and the only party capable of main tain i ng it, Respectfo 1 ly, Oct. 17 E. DIVINE, Gen'l Ticket Agt. Gen'l Supt. New Schedule to Charleston. A fast passenger train has recently been putoa the Central R. R., the schedule of which may be seen in another column. It is a great convenience to those in the vicinity of Sumter having business iu Charleston, ena bling them to go and return the same day after spending nearly nine hours in the city. Close connection is made with the Express train on the W. C. & A. R. R. which allows those living on the eastern portion to take advantage of the schedule. It is an experi ment, however, and should it not pay it will be taken off. Brand and Bartlett. The following was received by our mer chants from Supt. If the Herald knew the sentiments and wishes of the people of this district, it would have, iostead of saying that Con gressman Richardson's coarse was not patriotic, landed him to the skies. Con gressman Richardson, in declining to run in opposition to the regular Demo cratic norm* ee, deserves the highest praise of every true citizen of South Carolina. We admit, however, he but acted the part of a consistent Democrat, bat in this manly adherence to duty as exhibited through the public and pri vate life of John S.
