The new comet presents a magnificent ap- j
"-pearance. From 4 e*clock it grows io beauty
until the splendor of the newly risen sun hides
it to the naked eye. It is even more brilliant
than the one which appeared in the Western
sky just before the war. Ko one should miss
this grand ind unusual spectacle. The tail is
about 20 degrees long and between 4 and 5
so'clock in the morning it makes an angle of
45 degrees with the eastern-horizon, pointing
towards tb? lone star Alphard in Hydra. I t
is slightly baot, or sword shaped, the concave I
side being toward the Jiorth. There is an ap- !
pearanceas .ot. narrow, dark rifts running
lengthwise through it, as. though . a painter
bad drawn it with a coarse brush. Its ^harp
outlines and steady light increase the appear?
ance of solidity which atones impresses the
beholder on seeing the comet
The best time to see it is between 4 J and 5
o'clock in the morning. It rises tail first,
and the red bue that it borrows from the
morning base increases the impressiveness of
the scene- Nobody who rises early to see this
comet will regret the loss of sleep it costs, for
re may not behold such a spectacle in the
"n^yeats. -'

Mr. E. S. Carson, foreman of tbe Grand
Jury, offered the following Presentment on
Tuesday, too late for our last issue:
Presentment of the Grand Jury.
OCTOBER TERM 1882.
The Grand Jury respectfully submit to
the Court that as all the County offices were
examined in February 1882, the Grand Jury
concluded that it was unnecessary to do so
again.
They would respectfully present to the
Court that they have examined the work of
R. S. Brad well, for which he was to be paid
the sum of Three Hundred Dollars for index?
ing the books of the Recorder of Mesne Con?
veyance for this County, and find that tbe
said sum is too small for the work and we
respectfully recommend that Mr. R. S. Brad
well be paid the sum of Five Hundred Dollars
for said work.
.1 We would farther present to this Court
the fact that one Robert Cou neill, a violent
character, now under charge of burglary
and larceny, is now at large in the county,
having upon two occasions escaped from the
officers of the law, as this Jury is informed.

Esmeralda.
The Madison Square Theatre Company won
for themselves the boisterous applause of a
crowded house last night, in tbe domestic
comedy entitled- "Esmeralda." We noticed
in the house persons representing almost
every section of the County, and the troupe
were.enlivened by the fact that their visit was
at-least a pecuniary success.
?Tbe^p??? was simple and unique; and the
play was thoroughly decent and respectable.
Its morals were numerous-oneaboutjthe fury
of a domineering wife-one about the mu?
tability of shifting human fortunes--one
about the strength and i?ncbahgeabl?ness of
true love, and one about the preciousness of
an old homestead.

A bachelor friend of ours ia/town "went to
one of thc shoemakers here to have his meas?
ure taken for a pair of shoes. That morn!pg
he looked over three dozen pair of socks to
gera pair without a hole in them. His
search was rewarded by his finding a single
sock intact, which he paton to make a pre?
sentable appearance. Entering the shop be
was told by the shoemaker to take off his
shoe,^phich be did with alacrity, having an
eye single to tbe sock without the hole. His
measure was taken. So far so good. 'Now,
let's get thc other foot, blandly remarked the
shoemaker. Horror! 'Thisfoot is tbe lar?
gest/ said tbe bachelor. But the shoemaker
insisted on having the measure of both feet,
and as no excuse WOP M be listened to, that he
"dido'-t bave time-would come back again/'
at last off came the other eboe, when lo I bis
foot was bare to the heel 1 The poor fellow
tried to explain by saying he wasn't "mar?

afterward bought two dozen pairs of the best
British hose. He certainly deserves the sym?
