Reed, colored, has another petition which he is carryicg around, asking the citi zens to .sign. It contains grave charges against Sam Lee, denouncing bim as a liar, thjef and a swindler. Reed asserts and says he can prove it by several colored preachers and others, that Lee appropriated, to bis own private use, the funds of the Joint Stock Company and of their organ, the Vindicator. If Reed succeeds in proving these charges, Lee will be rather in an uncomfortable position, when the time arrives to. canvass this Con gressional District. Whether true or not, Hon. John S. Richardson would do well to remind some of Lee's supporters in Washing ton how this aspiring Congressman is thought of by some of his colored brethren at home. Maj. John W. Maj. Dargan refused to give the name, but whoever thecman is, he should make a will bequeathing all his prop erty to the Radicals to be used for election purposes this fall, and.then sneak off to some swamp where the buzzards will be unable to find' his carcass, and shoot himself. Las* week a" pair of mules of Mr. A. S. Brown, while pulling a reaper, were killed by a dead tree falling across them. Although the, falling of this tree at this particular time might seem mysterious to the unthoughtful, it is really not at all so; for if there were som?- method whereby v. c. could calculate with mathematical precision tbe disintegra ting effect of the weather and other influences which have, been operating upon this tree for years past, Mr. Brown could not only have knowo the day but the very second it was 1 going to fall, and, as a matter of course, could have ordered his dnrer not to attempt to pass it at that time. It is our ignorance, not the occurrence, that is mysterious. Messrs. Being rather closely confined in the sanc tum, oor knowledge of the various commoai tieSrW-hich are likely to create a boom in the financial market, is somewhat meagre, but as there seems to be a hankering for moonlight straw-rides, we would advise Speculator, by all means, to buy up all the straw he can get; and if this amusement increases in pub lic favor, before the Summer is ended, Specu lator will undoubtedly have made a snug little fortune by said investment. ? i ? Inspection, Drill, &c. "The Sumter Light Infantry will be inspect ed by Gen. Manigault on Monumental Square, on next Thursday, at 12 o'clock. After in spection, tbe Company will be .drilled by Capt. Atdd, in tbe manual of arms, and in the marchings. It is absolutely necessary that every member of the Company shall turn out that day as the Company will receive a certain sum of money per bead for every man who is in ranks, and only those, in ranks will be counted. Tbe Company is ordered to as semble at Music Hall at il o'clock in tbe morning. Let every man be at h?s post promptly. At 8^ o'clock, the same evening, there will be a Plume Drill at Music Hall. Two plumes will be awarded, to the best and second best drilled men, in the manual of arms. Tbe public are inviteds to attend at the Monumental Square in the morning, and at the Hall in the evening, where the per formances will close with a Hop. - i? i i ? Broom Drill. From the July number of The Delineator, a Metropolitan Fashion Magazine, we extract the following on the subject of theTJroom Drill*: '1 'Eight, sixteen or thirty two damsels form tbe company, and while no regulation cos tume is insisted on, still a much prettier effect is-gotten when, like tbe Household Brigade, they, are apparelled alike. A pretty toilette consists of a kilted skirt of wbite nun's vail ing with a Jersey jacket of tbe same, orna- j mented for the time being with gold braid and lace; the caps may be neat ones of white muslin. * $ s- ? ~ * v ? * The initials of the fair soldier arc embroid on a ribbon band, about six inches wide ; and ibis is put around the centre of the bushy part of the broom and fastened tight. Then a narrower ribbon is placed nearly half a yard above tbe brush on the handle, and an other about tbe same distance from the top, each being tied in a full bow. A soldier friend must teach the gentle cap tain how to drill her company, only the sim plest tactics being attempted. Tbe picture is at once pretty and funny; -1.2 jaunty but sedate expression of the brigade, and 'the ex actness with which the drill is performed being very attractive." Bishopville Democratic Club. Peterson's Magazine for July is before us, with ope of the most exquisite steel engravings we have ever seen, 'Chasing the Butterfly,' alone worth the price of the number. Theu there is a charming colored steel fashion-plate, with five figures ; a colored pattern in crewels, Pomegranites and Leaves;' and something like fifty wood-cuts of dresses, work-table pat terns, etc., etc., a perfect galax v ' of good things. We have often spoken of this maga zine as the best and cheapest of the ladies' books; and we can only now repeat this praise and advise everybody to subscribe. No family should be without it, for the low price?only two dollars a year?placing it within the reach of all. To cluhs, the terms are even lower, with handsome premiums for getting up the club. A Horrible Tragedy. A dispatch dated Lumberton, N. C, June 7, says: Jane McKellar and Frances McNair, two young women in St. Paul's town ship, N. C., were rivals for the love of a young man of the neighborhood. The man in the case seems to have courted them both. At all events both of the girls were dead in love with him and had set their hearts upon winning him. For a long time there had been a bad feeling between them. They avoided each other as much ae possible, bat at last their hatred overcame them and they quarrelled openly. During the past few days hostile messages had pass ed between the two women and, having agreed to fight it out, they met on Fri day evening in a secluded dell, not far from the main road, and began to settle the trouble between themselves. Jane McKellar was the larger and more muscular, though her antagonist, while spare, was lithe and quick of mo tion. They fought ..each other like tigers, and, finally, Jane McKellar suc ceeded in throwing her small j but plucky, opponent, and with her heavy knee pressed in the stomach pfthe pros trate woman, grasped her by the throat with the fury of a tigress, and Well nigh choked her life from her. Finally, by a last terrible efiort,\ Frances McNair, who had been wriggling .upon the ground, like a serpent in agony, gave a sudden twist of the body, forcing her antagonist to lose her "seat and fall side ways to the ground. Befbrershe. could recover herself, Frances got on her feet, drew a bowie-knife, and plunged it into the heart of Jane McKellar, who died with one gasp. Francis was sd frightened when-she saw what she had done that she swooned and threw herself across the prostrate remains of the murdered woman where she was found. A party bad followed them, but too late to prevent tbe terrible tragedy. Faded Colors Bestored. Editors Watchman and Sou?iron : I endorse every word contained ia the com munication signed "Many Farmers," nomi nating Col. J. H. EARLE for tbe Senate. Tbere is no man in Sumter County more de serving of the position than Col. Earle, nor one that will come nearer carrying the whole vote of the people, (conservati*'es included.) Tbe peoi'le of Sumter County owe Col. Earle a debt of gratitude, politically speaking, and I hope they will liquidate the same by elect ing bim unanimously to the Senate. _COUNTRY MAN. J. Bossard for Senator, and as your subscriber thinks he is both a voter, (if he can get a ticket,) a citizen and tax-payer, he. claims the right to say that he belongs to a very large class who are going to elect Joseph H. Earle to that position. Mr. Earle has not yet agreed to accept; but many, very many, voters, citizens and tax-payers are going to elect him and force the position upon bim, and make bis case one where the office will seek the man, which is rare in Sumter Coun ty.
