Begin having missed the key to bis store-room cn Friday night, immediately suspected his porter, Tom Gardner, of having taken tbem for an evil purpose. In order to entrap the thief, Mr. Bogin, Jr. took his seat at a convenient place after night, and waited for Tom to come upon his thievish mission. He did not have to wait very long before Tom came and entered the store-room. Mr. Bogin tbixefore went in upon him, and as be escaped fired two shots at him, one taking effect in his-hip, the other in the lower part of the leg Baring tiie night be was arrested at some noose near the depot, and put in the lock-up. It ie hoped ne,&-that the thief will meet bis reward. He has already been on trial several times, and Trial Justice Moses says he has co3t the County several hundred dollars by numer ous trials for crimes; but somehow he has heretofore esot|?ed justice. He cannot hope to get diar tbxs time. The Six O'clock Arrangement. All the business houses in town except two bad, at last accounts signified tbe'r willing ness to close at six o'clock. As we under stood that an effort would be made to secure the consent of these bouses, we hold over a lengthj communication on this subject. Burglary and Larceny. In April, and on the 27th and 29th of March, Henry Richardson and Roy Lee, by drawing the staple off of the window, entered the store of Mr. A. White, and stole 7 pair of shoes, one side of meat, and a piece of cloth. On last Sunday, June 4th, Mr. Henry S. Dar by saw the parties attempting to cut a hole through the back of the chimney in said store. They were arrested, and carried to the Guard House by Chief of Police, and confessed that the shoes were in Alfred Brunson's house, where they resided. Justice Moses issued a search warrant, and 2 pair of shoes were found in Branson's house, together with a pistol that had been stoleu from Col. Graham. Branson was committed to jail, but afterwards discharged for want of evidence of complicity. Henry Richardson and Roy Lee were commit ted by Justice Moses in delault of bail, for burglary and larceny, and for attempting to break and enter the store of Mr. A. White. CANDIDATES. DE. J. J. BOS SARD FOB THE SENATE. SUMTER, S. C , June 5, 1882. Editors Watchman and Southron: We deem it a great privilege to second the nomination of Dr. J. J. Bossard for the Sen ate which we saw in the last issue of the Advance. Dr. Bossard we know has filled that position with the greatest acceptance to the entire people of this County, and we think that ss long as we can get bis consent to fill the position he now holds we may justly con sider ourselves fortunate. By reasons of his pre-eminent conservatism we are confident that he can carry more votes for the Democra cy than any other man that may be brought out for the position?a democrat to the back bone, but strictly conservative in all bis sen timents. Again, Dr. Bossard is just now in the position to do the people .of Sumter County the most good by bis thorough ac quaintance^ with the affairs of the Senate. Therefore we heartily endorse his nomination, believing that he is pre-eminently the man for the place, and if nominated can be elected with greater certainty than men more ultra in their opinions. Bossard for the Senate, every time. MANY CITIZENS. COL. JOS*. H. EARLE. Messrs. Editors : There is no consistency in worshipping . the phantom of Democratic Conservatism, while putting into office men who are fitted neither by disposition, train ing nor by peculiar bent" of genius, to plan and carry out those principles and to impart the same to our bodies politic. This misfortune is the source from whence bad government springs. History confirms this; and it should be overwhelming enough to cause all personal favoritism aud animosities to sink_ioto -insignificance in the breasts of our people, when the tirae~n?s~arriveo"fbf them to say, "who is the best man to serve U3 in this or that position." This has ever been and will ever be the sentiment aud wish of all true patriots. Why ? because their country's interests first, their personal likes last, are considered. And* .feeling" 4u our hearts, Messrs. Editors, that the Old GameCock Coun ty would be the last in the Stale to ignore such noble principles, we are constrained do longer to keep back the name, of the man whose ability to grapple with political difficulties and fortbeexecution of any work which imper atively calls for. the exercise of foresight and good judgment, is the one above all others who should be brought forward as a candi date for the Senate.. That man is Col. Jos. S. Earle. View him from all standpoints, and see if he is found wanting in the slightest degree. A democrat, ccnsercatice but firm (none of your weak-kneed and afraid-to-do-sort of con servatives) of the purest character. A man with the gravity and dignity of an Indian Chief, but wiih the simplicity and modesty of a child. One who has ever been ready and who has responded . to every duty whereby the County's welfare has been advanced. This he demonstrated most patriotically in 1876, when he was brought forward aud insisted upon to run for the Legislature, and to prevent a split in the party he declined in favor of a gentleman who there was every reason to believe would run as an Indepen dent. His work in all our campaigns is only equalled by his earnestness and zeal which he exhibited at all limes and UDder all cir cumstances solely for the cause of the demo- j cratic party. Be bas gone to the TJ. S. Court | and stood up manfully and patriotically for I oar citizens, paying all bis expenses in every J instance, except in the trials recently held in j Charleston. Col. Earle, being a practical man with the loftiest conception of what is right before the eyes of his God and hi3 fellow man, is pre eminently suited for the Senate. Yours truly, MANY FARMERS. . FOB COMPTROLLER GENERAL. Messrs Editors: As the time is rapidly ap proaching for the session of our Democratic State Convention, we beg to present for tbe consideration of that honorable body the nameofCAPT. WM.E. STONEY in connec tion with the office of Comptroller General. We would not claim anything for him on account of his gallant conduct during the war, though his wounds could speak eloquent ly in his behalf. With our people such con-^ duct was-the role and not tbe exception. If we refer to it, it is simply as of an instance of duty well performed. Knowing this gentleman's character and ability we put him upon bis merits, as a citi zen iu every respect worthy of the high posi tion to which we nominate him. Already well informed as to its duties, be would bring to tbe office the purity and steadiness of princi ple, the high intelligence, and the clearness and exactness of a mind well disciplined by education, insuring a successful administra tion thereof, which would be rendered still j more acceptable by bis unassuming dignity and pleasant manners. An Address to the Colored Teach ers of South Carolina. The Executive Committee of tbe South Carolina Teacher's Association have received a comaiunicatioo, sign ed by one hundred representative citizens of Columbia, authorizing them to send you happy greetings and to extend you most cordial welcome to enjoy the privilege of our city and the hospitality of our homes during your visit to the Normal Institute in July. These citizens have furthermore pledged themselves, over their signa tures,, to obtain board and lodging for each member of the Institute at rates not exceeding three dollars per week. Our homes shall be your homes, our firesides your firsides, 'for we?be breth ren.' Your sojourn shall be pleasant. Therefore we siucerly beseech you to use every endeavor to have a large at tendance. Your school sessions have been short, your salaries small, true. You may be compelled to make great sacrifices to come, yet we are confident that you will cheerfully meet this para mount obligation. Free tuition will be afforded to all teachers of public and private schools. Tbe corps of instruc tors is able and efficient. Come ! Come! Come to the Institute. By all means let every County be fully represented. Railroad companies will doubtless of fer reduced rates. The Superintendent of Education may give due notice of the same. Tbe President of the State As sociation, whose address is Columbia, will gladly give any information. We remember with regret that several Boards of Trustees ordered certain schools to be opened on the eve of the Institute last Summer and that thus they unintentionally, perhaps, prevent ed a large number of teachers from at tending. Seeing that the success of this movement must indirectly affect the welUbeiog of tbe entire comrrfcm wealth, we earnestly appeal to every citizen of tbe State to lend his influence to promote the cause. We appeal espe cially to the-pulpit and the press to wield their great power continually in urging this matter upon tbe people. Do we appeal in vain ? WILLIAM M. DART. President of tbe South Caroliana Teach ers' Association. J H. Sims, Secretary. Columbia, S. C, May 11, 1882.
