Last Friday evening a goodly cumber of:
invited guis's assembled at the residence of i
Col. Biandmg, to see the "T&bleaux and
Charades," gotten up by a few of the young j
ladies and gentlemen of our town.
The improvised stage and stage appurte- i
nances, gave evidence of the amateaur's ideas j
of the "eternal fitness of things."
At half past eight o'clock the ringing of a i
little bell, announced that the first tableau j
scene was about to be presented, and before!
the young l.idies in the audience bad time to j
pat their bangs and settle themselves in an i
easy position, Noah and family were before 1
them. Although wedc not believe that Ham's J
and his wife's skin was black (and if it were |
it was Lee;: use they did not wash during their j
stay in the ark.) this scene was very amusing,
aud old brother Ham and his good lady being
well "corked" represented the "nigger" capi
tally.
Pocrhontas, the duel, and the confessional
scenes were very creditaoly represented^ and
reflected credit on all who took part.
The representation of the "Gallantry of Sir j
Wal:~r Raleigh" seemed to have been the \
teent of all the tableaux, if we are to judge by
the way a*! the boys craned their necks to get a
good ~.rjc\ at the charming queen.
Oar oly criticism is '.hat we doubt whether
Queen Elizabeth was ever as good looking as
she wp.s represented to be in the tableau.
Tht scene of the "Two Orphans" was a
most Successful burlesque and brought forth!
immoderate peals of laughter?most of the
girls exclaiming, "Oh! my!"
The two bast "bits" of the evening were j
"Epb," a ftfee devised by Messrs. Mikell and
Bossel!, and the song gotten up by Messrs.!
Mikell, Russel and Baynsworth. The song ;
was b-.sed on the familiar, air, "In the morn- j
ing by the bright light:" and brought down I
house.

Death of Mrs: 2C. Harley.
The news reached us on Sunday, of the
death of this most estimable Christian lady, i
which ocenred at Barawell C. H., on Thurs
day last. We have not yet learned the cause
of her death, but suppose it was superinduced
by a chronic complaint with which she had
long been afiiicted. j
Mrs. Harley has for some years edited the j
"Home Circle" Department of the Baptist \
Courier, and has won for herself multitudes of j
friends. I
She was left without property and without
a home, at the death of her husband, in 1363.
About ten years ago a distant relative in
England left her twenty thousand dollars
which she wisely used in dispensing needed |
charities. On the day of its receipt she gave
two thousand dollars to different Christian |
charities, and at her death the whole amount
has been bequeathed to the Southern Baptist
Theologieal Seminary at Louisville, Ky.

manner possible. The proceeds of the even- \
ing will go to repairing the Episcopal parson- I

The charades selected are entitled, "A j
Pretty Piece of Business" and c,'My Turn

past success will be sufficient guarantee to in
sure a most enjoyable evening and be the

?SS* The following letter has been receiv
ed by our School Commissioner :
U." S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. I
Washington. D. C. Feb. 2, 1882.
Mr. IF. F. Rhame, SupU Free Schools, Sum
ter, S. C.
Dear Sir :?I have directed two nice TJ. S.
maps to be sent to you, out of my allowance,
for the Free Schools of Sumter?one for the j
White, and one for the Colored school. |
Please present them to these schools, in my
came, and oblige, Yours truly,
JOHN S. RICHARDSON, i
I
We would be glad to say in connection j
with the above letter from the Hon. J. S. !
Richardson, that in our opinion, convenient j
furniture with suitable maps, charts, &c, are :
as necessary to make a school prosperous, as j
good teachers, and we are glad that our Rep- j
reseatative has in bis thoughtful kindness, |
done something towards supplying a want in j
our schools. "Times change, and we change |
with them," and the day, in which an educa- j
tion could be obtained in a log shanty, furn- j
tshed with pine slab seats, without backs, !
and all other things proportionately luxuri- j
ous, is passing, or has passed away. We are j
glad of it, for there is no reason why school i
rooms should not be made pleasant to teach- !
ers and pupils.

Murder in Clarendon.
On last Tuesday afternoon, the 7th instant,
Edwin Billups, a negro living in Calvary j
Township, Clarendon County, was waylaid j
and shot while crossing a branch on the pub- ;
lie road. He was shot with a pistol?four !
balls having struck him. lie was said to have !
been a goood man. and his death is regretted '
by his neighbors, white and black. At lastac- ;
counts his murderer had not been discovered, j
Although suspicion is is said !o attach to a j
certain party, sufficient evidence has not j
been obtained to warrant arrest.
The cause of the killing was of an entirely
private nature. Billups leaves a family.

The Wateree Railroad.
.Vcssrs. Editors:
We understand that a meeting of the Cor
porators of the above named road and the
Council will be held this (Monday) evening, j
to discuss the ways and means for carrying
i ut the enterprise, and it would be well for j
your readers to consider the importance of!
this undertaking,,
All who get freight from this depot, or who j
trade in Samter, are interested financially in I
building a road from hers to the Camden j
Branch. Sumter needs a competing line, and j
must have one. and where else can it be built j
so cheaply as along the Hue of the old W. & \
M R. R. ?
At least ?40,ODO worth of freight passes j
through this depot annually, one fourth of!
which can be saved by completing the new j
road, thus directly benefiting all who trade
here. It will also benefit the town, for re-j
duced freights will briDg reduced price:! and !
increase'3 trade.
If Suro'er were to build the entire road it
would be ampjy repaid in a few years: but;
the burden will no* be left upon her shoul- |
ders. Charleston will help, and so will the j
S. C. R. R., both of whic-h are interested in j
opening this line. The advantages of this
connection are not confined to freights, for
passenger trafic wrl! come in for a large share.
Take one instance; excursion rates to
Charleston by way of Florence are $6.65,
while from Middleton it is S*.60 and during i
I
tue Atlanta exposition the same difference was j
shown. Somter conld conveniently enjoy j
those benefits if the Waterce Road should be I
built. PRO BONO PUBLICO

[For the Watchman and Southron.!
Messrs. Editors :
By request, the undersigned wonld suggest j
the following view as a necessity to the plan- I
ters of Lynchburg and Bishopville; That, in- j
stead of moving the heavy crops of cotton j
from Bishopville and its surroundings, to !
Lyncbburg and return freights in the ordina- j
ry way, (by wagons:) a better medium o* j
transportation can be had by simply building j
a tramway between the two places. The util- i
ity of such an enterprise readily suggests it- j
self to the advocates of progressive facility ia
the relief afforded thereby to both man and ]
beast. The cost of such road would be corn- ;
paratively small, owing to the almost un- '
broken ievel of country between the two j
places, with the vast amount of suitable tiro- i
ber on said route.
Such transit will assuredly give impetus, I
not only to farming and domestic interests, ;
bnt to still greater improvements in the line;
of travel by extending it to Sumter. The ad- i
vantages arising from Lateral branches to j
prominent points on the main trunk, are in- .
calculable.
The writer will therefore encourage the j
planters of Sumter to Improve the present by |
attempting that which will be productive of j
so much good. M'/rc anon. J. U. ',

Presentment of the Grand Jury.
THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA,
COCXTY OF SCMTER.
IN THE COURT OF SESSIONS.
February Term, A. D., 1S32.
To ike Honorable J. B. Kcrshaw Presiding
Judge.
We, the Grand Jury, beg leave to report.
That in accordance with your Honor's in
structions, we have visited and examined in
to the condition of the various County Offi
ces, and would respectfully present the follow
ing facts and recommendations:
That the Office of the Cleric cf Court is at
present neatly and correctly kept, but that
the indexes to Judgments and the Register of j
Mesne Conveyance from 1S39 to 1871, both;
inclusive, are la a mutilated condition, some I
portions of them being already lost, so that!
it will soon be impossible to nscertain wheth- j
er deeds have been lecordtd or judgements i
obtained. We reccommend, therefore, that j
the County Commissioners cause a general j
index or indexes of the Records, cf the Regis
ter of Mesne Conveyance Office, siuce and in- j
cludi. ? the year 1S39 to be made; and also j
a general index of Judgments (Summary j
Processes and others, being united in one !
index.)
That the Sheriffs Office is sadly in need of j
indexes to the books of Ex-Sheriffs Cogblan j
and Tinda!. We recommend that the County j
Commisioners sell or otherwise dispose of the
two old iron Safes now in the Sheriffs office.
We recorameud further, that the Jail be
repaired, by replacing iron bars lost or brok
en, receiling cells, closing up rents in the j
walls made by prisoners in their attempts to |
escape, and in several other particulars of
minor importance.
That the Poor House Buildings be given all
necessary repairs, and that the dwellings of:
the inmates (at present 18 in number, com-[
prising 6 families) be thoroughly whitewashed j
within; that two bedsteads and furniture for j
a Stove be furnished, and we would call |
special attention to a fire-place in the main j
building, which endangers the whole pro- i
perty.
We would further present that the extrava- 1
gance of cur County Commissioners in pay
ing exorbitantprtce3 for bridges and footways, j
is deserving of the most severe censure.
That the General Road Law should be so
amended, that Trial Justices may be enabled j
to visit punishment upon those who refuse cr
I neglect to perform road duty.
That, as considerable opposiiion to the en
forcement of the Stock Law has been evinced
by our citizens, we recommend a quiet and f
peacable submission. That while this law j
may bear hardly upon some now, we hold j
the opinion, that it will ultimately result in j
the greatest bene5t to all. j
All cf which is respectfully submitted.
