J. R. Earvin, Esq., expects in about three
weeks, to bid adieu to Old Sumter, and
gratify bis earliest ambition-to "go West."
Mrs. A. E. Diukins and her daughter, Miss

sore affliction and oar deepest sympathies are j

The Sumter Light Infantry have decided to
go to Charleston on the 22d of next month, j
It is likely arrangements will be made that j
the round trip will not cost more than $3 or .
$4, and all those wishing to enjoy a short j
stay in the "City by the Sea,*' can avail
themselves of this opportunity.
The Trustees of this District have succeed"
ed in getting good desks and seats for the
White Graded School. Thi-y were much need- j
ed, and the thanks of the pupils as weil as j
teachers are due those gentlemen. In our
opinion comfortable bouses and good furni?
ture are as necessary in making successful
schools as good teachers. We welcome all
sneh improvements.
Why can we not hare the town of-Sumter
- made into a School District? Then an ad?
ditional tax of two mills would carry on the
schools nine months. Our Legislators would
do a good thing by such an act.
Capt. T. B. Johnston has been appointed by
the President, Collector of the Port of Charles?
ton, and his confirmation by the Senate, if
considered almost certain. We congratulate
the Captain on his success. His nomination
hat given general satisfaction, and we think
he will fill the office acceptably.
Dr. I. N. Boyd, whose social qualities made
him a favorite in the large circle of acquain?

Williamsburg county a few months ; then he
intends seeing what the fates hare in reserre

Important to Farmers.
The advertisement of Messrs. Screren &
Bridges, which appears in this issue, should
; be clipped and kept in a memorandum book ;
by all the farmers, so they will always be pre- !"
pared to inform their neighbors, or any one
else, where the best engines and mills, the ?
most superior threshers, the best tempered I
plows and machinery of all descriptions can j ?
be had. Every piece of machinery Messrs.
f?creven & Bridges have ever sold has given
?stire satisfatioo, and as an evidence of this,
there are many farmers in this county who i
are now using their engines, and other ma- ,1
efeinery, who could not be induced to try any
other kind. Those needing anything in their
Une should give them a trial.
Runaway. ,
A horse attached to a wagon, the property I
of Mr. Fra-..k Brunsen, became frightened, at <
.ometbicg or other, at the depot, yesterday
morning, whereupon he took into bis head j

. dilapidated condition near the SuaresHouse.
Hr7Brunson held to the reins to the last, and
we hear got his hands somewhat bruised.
Our peerless hotel-man, Mr. J. E. Jervey, j
was, at the same time, leisurely driving down' <
Main street in his buggy, and on seeing the '
affrighted beast, suddenly recollected that im- *
portant buisness called him in another direc?
tion, for which point he forthwith, and with
onnsual alacrity "skipped," and not long af?
ter his departure, his turn-out and the runa?

South Carolina Sunday School In- j <
stitute.
The attention of Sunday Schcol workers
was called in our last issue to the Sunday |
School Institute to be held in Charleston, S.
C., February 21 and 22, 1882. Mr. B. F. !
Jacobs, of Chicago, Chairman of the Execu- i
tire Committee of the International S. S. Con- ? i
?ention, and Mr. E. Payson Porter, Statisti- j :
cal Secretar}-, and others, will be iu attend- ; :
f*?e? It vrill be ibe most important gather- j
?og of Sunday School workers ever had in 11
South Carolina, and no County in the State j j
can afford to be without intelligent represen- : ?
tatioa. it is important that all the officers j ?
of County Conventions attend-also ail Min- j ?
isten who are engaged more or k-ss in S. S. i
work. Provision has been made for the en- j 1
tertainioeot of delegates and tA*ir attendance i i
? urged. ..Each one who has been honored j 1
with an ?filial position in his County Organ- ? j
izatiorr ?rl?rnestly requested to be present. ;
Those attending are requested to send ibeir j ,
names to Rev. A. Coke Smith, Charleston, j.j

[For the Watchman and Southron.]
Messrs. Editors : The White Graded School
will soon close as a public institution, and
arrangements for the rest of the term should
now be made. It would be an unmixed evil
for the School to close when the public funds
are exhausted, and a little effort on the part
of tbose interested io its welfare would make
its contin?ance a certainty. We teed the
school. We have the house and it will soon
have good furniture, and it should be kept
open at least nine moths in the year; bat the
patrons ought to make the necessary arrange?
ments, and not leave it to the teachers to go
around soliciting scholars and urging their
claims upon parents, (a most distasteful
work to those who have a proper respect for
their prfession. ) We sadly need organization
in such tbiogs here. 80 much is left to
chance and accident. Can we not do better ?
Other towns look after their primary aud
academic schools and seem to interest them?
selves in their welfare and prosperity. Sum?
ter did so once, why not now ? If the schooi j
is not to close it would be advisable for the
children, who continue) to remain in the same
rooms and classes as at present, provided sat?
isfactory arrangements can be made with the
teachers. The tuition^ ? suppose will be as
low as possible, but that depends somewhat
upon the number of pupils, co it is to the in?
terest of all who contemplate sending^ to In?
duce others to do the same;
Changes of teachers and classes always
cause loss of time, and are unfortunate in
most cases to both teacher and taught.
I am confident that the teachers wonld be
thankful if the patrons would think over this
matter and let theta know what to expect.
We can certainly do this mach.

?IAYESVILLE ITEMS.

We have plenty of rain now. It falls jnst
right to wet the earth;
Rev; Mr. Manien, formerly a member of the
South Carolina Conference, has lately moved
to our townj and expects to make this bis
permanent home. The doctors forbid his
preaching at all.
Rev. Mr. Bradley preached for the Presby=
terian congregation last Sunday morning and
night. The communion was administered in
the morning. The congregation has not yet
called a pastor.
The demand for lnmber here far exceeds the
supply Capt. Atkins often runs his saw till
10 o'clock at night.
Mr. C. O. Wheeler now has control of the
wood and blacksmith shops, formerly owned
by the Chandler Brothers. The same efficient j
hands are employed and are turning out
wagons and buggies, in the latest styles.
It is rumored that arrangements are being
made for the general improvement of our
streets and side-walks. Tbs drainage now is
very good ; but the council is not yet satis- !
fied.
Immense quantities of corn are hauled j
every day from our depot. Often the wagon*9 j
are ready to unload the cars as they arrive. J
If anybody has a boy or girl to prepare for I
college or business, Mayesville is the place to !
send them. Our schools are up with the
times. Thc best and most efficient teachers :
are secured. j
Why is it so few advertisements from ?
Mayesville merchants appear in the columns \
of the Watchman and Southron? Send your j
man over and see about it. If the business I
men would step in the stores of the Solomons' ?
of your town and look around a little they !
will certainly be convinced that it pays.
The Baptist Congregation bas services every j
fortnight, morning and evening and prayer- j
meeting every Thursday night. The congre- :
g?tions are large and attentive. The build- |

Mr. Ball has entered upon his fifth year as j
pastor, with encouraging prospects.

Interesting To Ladies.
Our lady readers can hardly fail to hare ?
their attention called this week to the latest
combination of improvements in that most
useful of all domestic implements,- the "sew?
ing machine."
As we understand lt, a machine for family
use should meet first of all these requiremets : j
It should be simple in its mechanism, so as to
be easily managed ; it should run easily, so as
not to weary the worker unduly ; it should do
a wide range of work, that the owner need
not wish for any other machine ; it should be
as nearly noiseless as possible, that it may not
be a nnisance j" it should be light, handsome,
durable, and as cheap as is consistent with i
excellence throughout. j
These conditions tbs "Light Ra?ning New j
Home" certainly meets. j
It bas also,- seteral very important and use
fol attachments and "notiems" of its own, j
which go far to make gosrd itt claims to pop
alar favor.
Now a great many families bate been and j
are still usiug the old machines-waiting for j
tbe times to improve ; waiting for the latest j
improvements is designs and mechanical I
excellence.
Bet why delay langer? Considering the j
low price at which good machines are now '
sA?, and the improvements that have beeu
made, now is a good time to boy, and the
-'New Home" specially recommends itself to j
purchasers on acconntcf its superior meehan- j
?cal construction,, ease of management and
reasonable price. Nearly half a million have j
been jsold in the last three years, all of which
are giving universal satisfaction. This un?
rivalled machine is manufactured by JOHN- '.

Something that never fails-Fever and

how they are cured, whether from a rational
