OUR COUNTY FAIR Opens to-day, and although thc drought bas been most unfavorable for a complete success agriculturally, every other means bas been resorted to to make np for this deficiency, and from lae present prospects it will not fall far short of what might have been if cir? cumstances had been otherwise. The country people show their wisdom when they lay aside all home duties and labors, and devote so many days to the County Fair, for unless it is attended and backed up by our own people it is hardly probaWe it will be attended and sustained by others from the adjacent counties. The financia: worth of an Annual Fair to a county j can only be estimated by comparing those ! that have never had any with those that have, j It invariably brings capital fi om all parts of j the State, and from other States to be cir- j culated to the benefit of the county in which j it is held. It infuses the spirit of competition j in every farmer to try to do his best from ! \-ear to year in order to excel his neighbor j farmer m producing the different agricultural I commodities, thereby unconsciously laying j the foundation for the highest state of culti ration. Also a County Fuir is one of the be;t ! places for amusement and enjoyment whit h j is very essential to the well being of the hard j working farmer. COLUMBIA, October 20.-Dr. John Lynch a brother of Bishop Lynch, died at his home in Columbia of Brights disease. He had been suffering with it a long time, bnt has been confined to his bed only about a week. He was born near Georgetown, S. C., January 8, 1819- His father was Conlaw Lynch, Esq., of Cheraw, S., C. About the year 1856 he removed to Columbia for advantages of education for his growing family, and con? tinued to reside and practice his profession there to the present time. He was appointed surgeon-general of the State during the late war, after tue death ol Dr. Gibbes, which position he continued to hold. He was a I professor in the Medical Department of the | University of South Carolina after its recon- j struction, subsequent to 1368, and retained ; tbe position until that institution was closed, i He leaves a widow and nine living children, j several cf them married.
