"B? Stift, and know that X ara '{>od ; I will
be exalted among t*he heathen ; ? will be ex
.alted tu the earth.-Ps. xlvi. 1 f>.
O cease thy wanderings to and fro !
Return, my soul, unto thy rest ;
Hast thou not heard, "dost thou not know,
That in thy patience thou art ble sed ?
?ne winds may howl, the tempest rage,
The angry wares around thee swell ;
Bnt fear thee not, nor bo dismayed,
Thy Saviour doeth all things well.
And Ke who made the storm a calm,
And bade the raging sea be still,
Hath for thy wound a healing balm,
Au antidote for every ill.
He hears the cry of the poor,
-And to the needy soul He saith,
"I've set for thee an open door,
Sor every man I've tasted death."
Then follow not thy restless will,
But wait in silence, "watch and pray,"
*Be humble, lowly, meek and still,
And Christ himself W??? lead the way.
5e saith not, "Go," but, "Fc-Kow me-;"
And should the way be dark and dcear,
Stand still, and thy salvation see,
Assured thy Saviour's hand is near.
Commit thy way nnto the Lord,
And he will guide thee safely home ;
^The boon of Peace, a rich reward,
Shall for thy sufferings here atone.
ELIZA H. MKADER.
Hymnology.
-o
Pani wrote to the Ephesian Christians:
'Be not drank with wine, whereto is ex?
cess; but be filled with the Spirit,
speaking to one another in psalms and
flymns and spiritual songs, singing and
making melody in your hearts to the
-Lord/ The churches have followed this
advice through ail the ages, and even
when the early Christians had to meet
in caves and in forests to worship, they
sang, though they had to do so in an
tinder tone to avoid detection.
The antiphonal was the earliest mode
of singing. It came down from the
days of the Hebrew fathers. This seems
to be the method referred to in the verse
quoted above, One sung and another
.-answered. Perhaps one reason for this
-was that they often spent a long season
in this kind of worship, and the singers
?alternated in order that one set might
'rest while the others were singing.
Of the ancient Latin hymns, some of
which we often meet with, we shall have"
T)ut a word to say as they are not class- j
*-ed among what we call modern popular j
lymns. There is a solemnity of rhythm j
un them that is not equalled by any
-of our later hymns. The 'Te Deum/
?sed principally in the Catholic Church,
ls remarkable fer its beauty and espe?
cially for the humble spirit of reverence \
that pervades it. Tradition says it j
broke, in alternate parts, from the lips
of Ambrose and Augustine as the latter
was about to be baptized about the year j
430, A. D. Robt. Hall, the celebrated j
English Baptist preacher, once prepar- j
ed a sermon on the words : *A11 the |
earth, doth worship Thee, the Father j
everlasting/ When he had finished it, !
be turned to his Bible to find the place j
of bis text, but it was not there, and he !
afterwards discovered that it was a line !
?irern tbs 'Te Deum.' Its truth and
"beauty had misled him. So are there
many to this day who devoutly believe
"that the trite saying, 'cleanliness is next
to godliness,' is a quotation from thc
Bible.
The most beautiful of all the ancient !
%ymns, in our opinion, is thc one enti- ;
.tied, 'Stabat Mater,' written by Jaco- j
bus de Benedictis. Its rhythm and j
softness of tone are unsurpassed. It |
represents Mary the mother of Jesus, j
standing by the cross of her dying Son. |
Th second verse and its translation are j
as follows ;
Quis est homo qui non fleret j
Christi raatrem si videret,
In tanto su pp! icio ? i
Quis posset non contristari,
Piam matrem contemplari,
Dole G lera cum Filio?
Who, unmoved by tenderest feeling,
Could behold her, struggling, reeling, ?
'Neath her weight of sorrow sore?
Who could view, unsyrnpatizing,
That fond mother agonizing
With the child her l.osom bore ?
- * i
Passing on down to the middle ages, j
we hear a hymn sounding out from a j
quiefc retreat in eastern France-(and j
who has not been sweetly moved by j
it?)- I
"Jesus the very thought of thee
With sweetnefs fills my breast ;
And sweeter far thy face to see,
And in thy presence resi."
This hymn arose from the sanctified j
fceart and lips of St. Bernard of Clair- i
j
vaux, A. D. 1153. He was a saintly
man. He had had a pions mother, and j
praying above his cradle, like Hannah, j
she dedicated her son to the Lord j
Bernard, it seems, was impressed and j
afterwards converted by seeing his moth- j
er die. He sought to elevate the stand- j
ard of religion in his church, and bad
an exalted and pious view of the atone- j
ment of Christ. Some of his first con- ?
verts were his father and brother and j
personal friends. Ile lived to close thc j
eyes of most of his family, praying as ;
he did so, and finally died exclaiming, j
"I am in a statt betwixt too, having ?
a desire to depart and be with Christ, :
which is far better.
In other similar papers we shall dis- j
cuss the later hymns.

So far as the Bible can be considered
as expressing any opinion on stock op- ;
erations, corners in grain, and that sort |
of thing, we presume it might be rc- '
garded as siding with the bears and j

Prayer Mcc?irg in Spurgecn's
Church.
The meeting was held in the raain
audience ro-m There were about 2,
000 present. Thc preacher, with per?
haps a dozen others, sat in the large pul?
pit, which contains the baptistery, and
just underneath and in front of the one
I from which Mr. Spurgeon delivers his
I sermons. None were calkd upon to
talk, and only those who sat around
him on the platform were asked to pray.
At 7 o'clock, the pastor, rising from
his chair, said': "Now, dear friend,s let
us worship God by singing the 125th
hymn." He always reads one stanza
at a time all through thc singing. The
hymn was sung quite heartily (for they
ali have books and all seemed to sing,)
after which he talked a little about the
pleasures of thc prayer meceting-how
many longed for thc time to come.
4*0ur meetings have been very unlike
eacli other. A fortnight ago it was a
time of agonizing prayer, and some of
us were well nigh exhausted. A week
I ago it was totally different, a time of
cheer and gladness. I am sure I can?
not tell how it will be to-night. The
wind bloweth where it listeth-it may
be from the north or south, or the east
or west, or from a point between these
points. We can only say, "Awake I
oh, heavenly wind, and blow upon us."
Then followed about half a dozen pray?
ers, offered by one brother leading and
a second following, the pastor first read?
ing some request and asking the breth?
ren to pray especially for that. For j
example : A request from a mother, |
whose son is in a lunatic asylum, that
he may be restored to his right mind
and given* back again to his wife and
five children.
Now, said Mr. Spurgeon, I want to
talk to you a little while about a ques?
tion that none of you can answer.
Reading from the Bible, "Where wast
thou when I laid the foundation of the
earth V &c. It would bc impossible to
reproduce his admirable talk. "Can
you answer it?*' said he. "I will ask
you others. Where wast thou when
God ordained thee to be saved ? Where
wast thou when Jesus suffered and died
for thee? AU of this was done with?
out you, and yet it was well done. Oh !
how vou sink into nothing before such
questions. Don't think that God must
have you to do his work. Oh ! you fly
upon the chariot wheel of God ; don't
think the wheel must move by your
strength. Sometimes I am troubled
about the Master's kingdom, and then
this comes to me, 'Where wast thou
when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Does it depend upon thee whether My
kingdom shall prosper ? No, no, let
us get to be nothing, and then we can
look to God for everythir g."
Then followed other prayers, and
among them one by himself for some
old church member near the gates of
death. It was not a prayer, it was the
child going up to the father's house,
and opening the door, and earnestly, af?
fectionately, bclieviogly, making known
some heartfelt want. And then he said
he had a tract he wanted to read. He
did not read tracts much, he generally {
gave them away, but this contained an
incident of direct answer to prayer. It
was with reference to one of his own
meetings concerning which a clergyman
had written the little pamphlet.
A German minister made some
remarks, after which Mr. James Spur?
geon closed with prayer.
1 have given this hasty outline, be?
cause I know it will be of interest to J
many of our readers ; some of whom, j
as well as the writer, may profit by it. j
May it help us to get out of the old ruts j
-a hymn and a prayer, a prayer aud j
a hymn, an opportunity afforded some
brother to speak "a word" cf encourage
ment, &c, which word is about a half j
an hour long, and the result of all
which is death to thc meeting.
Let us pray for the "heavenly wind,"
and when it blows, find out which way
it is blowing, and set our sails accord?
ingly. I need not add, the meeting
was enjoyed by all. Thc interest did
not flag-all listened-they had to lis?
ten, and the old brothers and the old
sifters, too, who sat around me respond- j
ed a hearty amen to the prayers, and j
sang with all their might the hymns.
