TOBACCO PRICES ARE
SLIGHTLY DEPRESSED
Nearly Six Million Pounds of Leaf
Tobacco Sold in Danville Since
Market Opened.
Danville, Oct. 20.?Official figure.on
sales of tobacco on the local auction
floors fci the week ending yesterday
show that Danville has disposed
of Vearly six million pounds
since the market opened the new season
on October 3rd. The season's
sales total 0,1)86,716 pounds which
sold for $2,018,556.23, the average for
the market so far this season being
$33.71 per hundred pounds. The sales
for the week totalled 2,140,272 pounds
, which brought $702,489.74, the week's
average being $32.28.
The rales again today were ex
ceptionally heavy and were not tuny
carried over from yesterday. Double
sales were put on in one big warehouse
this afternoon to expedite the
tale. Prices have not fully recovered
the level early in the week, the depression
b.eing ascribed largely to the
large volume of offerings and the
congestion in the redrying plants.
Both of the^receiving plants of the
"pool" organization have been busy
throughout the week the graders being
engaged from nine in the morning
until night grading the tobacco.
The influx of tobacco to Chatham has
swamped the facilities there and reports
indicate "boom" times in the
county seat. ' j

NOTICE TO SCHOOL TRUSTEES.
The law says that it shall be the]
duty of the Board of Trustees of each
school district to determine at what
. time the period of compulsory attendance
shall start in their respec- j
tive districts and to give due notice j
thereof. It has been the custom in
Williamsburg county in the past to
begin the compulsory attendance period
on the first Monday in November,
all schools beginning the period
at the same time. I, therefore, suggest
that the period of compulsory
attendance begin in this county 011
Monday, November 6th.
The following are the main previsions
of the law:
Section 1814a. School Attendance
Required.?Every parent, guardian, or
other person having charge of any
child betwen eight and fourteen years
of age inclusive, must send such child
to a public, private or parochial school,
or to a competent tutor, subject to
the approval of the County Superintendent
of Education, for four consecutive
months, or eighty consecutive
school days, during the scholastic

term of any school is less than four

for the full term of such
school shall be sufficient to meet the
requirements of this Act except as
hereinafter provided.
