ANSWER TO MR. McCLENDON JUL HODGES DEPLORES STAND TAKEN BY MINISTER IN FAVOR OF BLEASE. The following letter is sent to The County Record from Cades, S. C., with a request that we publish same. He letter was written by C. P. Hodges in reply to a statement by the Rev. Baxter McLendon and originally published in the Pee Dee Advocate at Bennettsville, S. C. The lettar follows: Brownsville, S. C., July 29th, 1922 Editor Pee Dee Advocate: In Prov etbs 14 and 12 are these words: "There is a way which seemeth 'right xtSo a man, but the end thereof is she way of death." I noticed in your paper of last week that the Rev. Baxter McLendon has come out in defense of ex-Gov. Blease's pardoning record and we^e it not that Rev. McLendon is a minister of the gospel, I would have nothirg to say about it whatsoever; but I will not allow his ur.reasonable defense of Blease's pardon record to go nnchallenged. Mr. McLendon, why did you negfcet to .review that in four years that Gov Blease pardoned over seventeen hundred convicts, among them were tho vilest of murders, house-burners, ravishers of women, thieves, thugs, and cut-throats? This, I consider as being the darkest page ever written ^in South Carolina history and was the greatest crime that could have been committed against the moral fcfu of the young men and women ami boys and girls that will take generations to eradicate. Rev. McLendon, as a minister of the gospel, you have gone up and down this country preaching to sinners of the wrath of a just God and a judgment to come mod that the church of God is founded on obedience to his law, and that God never made a law without prodding a penalty, and that the basis ?f God's mercy, forgiveness and only hope of salvation is repentance and the new birth and my Bible teaches no other way. Now, in the mercv of God, he has provided a hell for the damned that his saints might live with him in everlasting glory. Poor Dives found this out when in hell he lifted up his eyes and saw Lazarus in Abraham's bosom, and when Abraham. teld Dives that there was a great g :lf between them and that it was impossible to send Lazarus to even administer a drop of water. I merely mention the above to show you the fixedness of God's law. Hi? word declares that the way of the transgressor is hard; that be sure your sins will find you out, so I ask, how can ten thousand petitions and pardons by ten thousand governors remedy the condition of the criminal ? As God has provided a hell for the rebellious sinner; so civilized society has provided laws, courts, jails, penitentiaries and chain gangs that it may protect itself against destruction from the criminal element, that is an mixed up in human society that it is impossible to eradicate it and I am horrified at the position you take, being a minister of the gospel. There is no temporizing or compromising in the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with the sinner or criminal against God. His punishment is sure and I warn you not to preach a gospel that palliates sin for a moment. The inexorable laws of God agaihst crime is one thing, and Blease politics is another, and thank God you can't mix th#m ud: hut as a minister of the gospel you can so confuse the ignorant mind and the criminal heart, that God alone can measure the destruction to the criminal or criminal inclined in the earth. Rev. Baxter McLendon, answer me this as in the sight of God. If you know we would have a Cole Blease for governor of South Carolina for forty years, the same kind of Blease that we had for the four years that he was govenor (indeed not mention that kind of governor we had; vnti lrnnw mnw about that than I do ss you were on the inside) would jon voluntarily remain in South Carlina? Would you be willing for your son to pattern after him? Would you be willing to take Blease's pardoning record with all of it's attachments and assignments and go into the judgment with it to face the H Great God of all the world? You fuILy understand that a minister of the gospel has got to preach the same Kind of gospel to himself that he preaches to others. You will no doubt recall that the "Word" declares, that in that day of days, that there will be those who will say; Lord I have prophesied in thy name, I have done many wonderful works in thy name, but the answer will come back, "I know you not." Do you believe in precept and example? Do you believe in the influence of the strong minded, evil hearted man over the weak? I know you do. Such a man aaa take God's "little ones" and can lead them into crime and hell by the multitude. "Lord lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil." * Do you believe in God's judgment e here upon earth? I do, with all my t heart. Don't you believe there are I hundreds of fathers all over South e Carolina who defiantly stood up for a the state dispensary and the open bar? And those fathers have lived f to see their daughters wedded to s drunken, gambling men who have Y made their lives a hell on earth? And b their sons to disgrace their family p and bring terror to the community b in which they live ? Who knows but r God himself; that ten years ago when . Blease was in his prime in turning " loose convicts and annulling .the de- 1 cisions of the courts that the three poor human beings that butchered that taxicab driver who were only [ ten or twelve years old at the time Blease began his pardoning of convicts did not hear some one in their c home or someone else boasting of the; great deeds that the governor of the state was doing in turning out men; who were guilty of murder and all the crimes in the decalogue, and that s germs of murder were planted in J their young hearts then, and who ? knows but that there may be thous-, c ands of other murders and criminals' ( who got their first conception from * some "noble" pardoning act of Gov- j ? ernor Blease! There is a way which 'c seemeth right unto a man, but the! end thereof is the way of death." I $ The vilest criminal and the great- \ est saint can't get away from the ? eternal consummation of God's laws, a "Though I take the wings of the morning and fly to the end of the:' earth, God is there, and though I' a make my bed in hell etc., God is 11 there." If Blease's pardon record is 1 righteous, and you seem to think J that it is; why not urge him to tell e the people that he is going to, if ( elected governor of the state open c wide the penitentiary and jails and' cut the shackles off of every convict ( and close up the court houses ? as he is a great stickler for cutting out | useless offices, a great economist. Why in this way he could save more than a million dollars annually to his rich corporation taxpayers in the <; state. Rev. Baxter McLendon, and Cole T Blease, both of you are outspoxen men, come out in the open and tell < the poor "down trodden" taxpayers what you mean to do. To the Christian Ministry and Christian men and women of South Carolina, the clock has struck, the hour has come for 1 action; will you act? It would be a1 thousand times better to raise our children on bread and molasses with c a God fearing character and as a law ? abiding citizen than to rear them in ? affluence and wealth with an utter c disregard for the laws of God and ] man. s Rev. Baxter McLendon, these are * perilous times in which we are liv- ? ing; the honesty, moral and social t life of the state is at stake and no f man in the state understands the I situation more fully than you should, j You know that there are thousands of men in the state who would den stroy the prohibition law, that stand J ready to commit murder, who stand' ready to rob stores and banks and a steal automobiles and anything they g can lay their hands on. Now, elect 1 a man as chief executive of the state J3 who has an established record that a he is utterly opposed to law enforcement (and as far as I know he has made, no statement to the public that ? he intends to make any change along that line if elected.) If the Chris- jfc tian Ministry and the Christian men 7 and women sit quitely by and allow such to take place, they will not deserve any better. If we elect to have good government, we have it, if we elect to go to hell or heaven, we get it, but lest you forget, my friend Rev. Baxter McLendon, my text 1 will repeat for yours and my benefit and for the benefit of men and women everywhere who perchance may read this article, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof is the way of death." In Sayville, N. Y., a man ninetyive years old, was attacked by a warm of bees. His daughter ran to lis aid, knocked him down with a iroom, swept him clean of stingers, licked him up, and carried him to a lospital, where it is stated he will ecover.
