LETS HAVE MORE KIRKS j If Kirk's Mean Churches and Giurches Mean Righteousness. A writer in the Florence Times has the following to say about our good friend, the Hon. R. J. Kirk: "On the second day of June, the writer, with several friends from Summerton, jumped in a touring car and made a hurried trip to Florence, South Carolina, the object of the trip being connected with a certain bankruptcy proceeding before Referee Kirk, whom, after some difficulty, we found happily housed in the Federal Court house at Florence. Kirk, the referee, claims an aristocratic pedigree and traces his ancestral history back to the first beginnings of South " * .t.. v.00 Carolina nistory, ouc ine wnvci ii? Hl investigated the matter and finds that the word "K:rk" means a little church, and therefore Referee Kirk is not a . person at all, but he is merely a little sacred edifice, being made a part of the federal court building at Florence by the judicial decree of Federal Judge H. A. M. Smith. Ever since the writer first commenced the read- j ing of history, he has understood that when our forefathers settled this i country, they declared for the separa- j tion of the church and the state, but when Federal Judge Smith installed Kirk, the referee, in the federal build- j ing at Florence, he clearly made Kirk, j the church, a part and parcel of the federal court house and thereby violated the first principles of the constitution of the United States." Examinations to fill 3 vacant fouryear scholarships and one vacant oneyear scholarship will be held at the county seat on Friday, July 14th, beginning at 9 a. m. under the supervision of the County Superintendent of Education. 1?Four-year scholarships. Open to students desiring to pursue agriculture or textile engineering. Subjects for examination: English ?including grammar, literature, composition and rhetoric; Algebra, including quadratic equations; America;: and European history; and practical agriculture. Age requirement, 16 years or over at the time of entrance. Winners of scholarships must be prepared to meet also the requirements for admission of the Association of Colleges of South Carolina.
