Mrs. W. H. Welch returned here
Tuesday evening from Charleston
vhere her little daughter, Mary Elizabeth
was taken several days ago
for observation and treatment by Dr.
Mclnnis, a specialist in Children's
diseases. The little girl returned with
her mother.
Messrs A. C. Hinds and W. C.
Claiborn were in Charleston Tuesday
to attend the final meeting of creditors
of the Williamsburg Hardware
Co. We understand that the affairs
of this concern, recently in bankruptcy,
have been satisfactorily adjusted
and business will now be re- '
sumed, with Mr. L. R. Mcintosh as

Yesterday the work of laying as- ,
phalt on east end of Main street was
completed and the big steam roller
crossed the railroad and is now rolling
out the black mixture on Main
between the railroad and Academy
stieet. Co; Tete work on Hampton
street is ab ut completed, and by
the end of the week it is hoped that ,
the concrete work on Academy between
Main and Mill streets will be {
completed. School street is also to ,
be concreted.

The County Board of Equalization !
was in session at the court house here J
Tuesday. Leaving town late in the j
afternoon each member carried a
large package of returns made out
by the tax payers in their respective 1
townships. The board will meet here .
again next week. In speaking of the 1
meeting here Tuesday one of the
members said that there was a very
liberal amount of hot air dispensed,
sc much in fact, that some of the
less talkative members of the board .
were obliged to "open up."

The Rev. Frank C. Hawkins accompanied
by Mrs. Hawkins and their
little daughter and Miss Bennett arrived
in Kingstree this morning. Mr.
and Mrs. Hawkins will occupy the
Baptist parsonage which has been
made ready for their reception. We
welcome these good people into our
midst and feel quite sure that the
same cordial welcome will be meted
rut to them by the citizens in general.
Mr. T. B. Young in a letter to Mr.
T. M. Cathcart advises all truck associations
in this county to send representatives
to Charleston on March
31, for the purpose of attending a
meeting to be held at St. John's hotel
with a veiw to organizing into
f>ne general trucking association.
He says the meeting is of vital importance
to truck growers. Several
from Williamsburg will attend the
meeting in addition to County Agent
Cathcart.

We reported last week that Mr.
Robert Godwin had refused to accept
a* insurance adjustment on account
of the loss of his home by fire on a
basis of three-fourths of the cost of
replacement which, as we understand
it, amounted to several hundred dollars
less than our figures gave. Our
informant was not talking for puoucation
and Mr. Godwin says that the
adjuster made him no proposition of
settlement.
We learned since the above was
put into type that Mr. Godwin's
claims have been satisfactorily adjusted.
Good Returns for Potatoea.
County Agent Cathcart reports to
u? that during the week a car of
banked sweet potatoes was shipped
from Gouruin to Richmond, Va.,
through the South Carolina Sweet
Potato Association for Messrs J. P.
Gamble, W. M. O'Bryan and S. A.
Granam. The lot was composed of 322
c ne hundred pound sacks and netted
the shippers $408.96, or an average of
76 cents the bushel. It will be understood
tliat the price paid for banked
potatoes is not as good as is commanded
by cured potatoes.
Week-end House Party.
Cades, Rt 1, March 28.?The eleventh
grade of Hebron Rural Graded
school was most enjoyably entertained
last week-end at the home of Miss
Thelma Smith, one of their number.
Ihe other members are Misses Eunice
DuBose, Mae McElveen, Vela and
Hazel Smith
These girls, with Miss Carolyn McElveen
accompanied Miss Thelma
heme from school Friday afternoon,
and had a lively time among themselves
until Saturday afternoon when
they were joined by the following
girls and beys: Misses? Vera Smith,
Elizabeth McElveen and Messrs Hertcrt
and Liston Smith, Barnie Wiltnn

Kalph McEIveen, Ehrlich Wallace and
Eli Kennedy. All went on a straw
ride to Black river, and there whiled
uv/ay several pleasant hours.
About sun-down the crowd was
rammoned to assemble at a cozy spot
where a deb'ghtful picnic lunch con:;rting
of sand-wiches, cake and home
made candy were served. This having
been prepared by two of the
girls, was an agreeable surprise to
the others.
On the homeward ride the happiness
of the crowd was expressed by
ihe singing of favorite songs. Arriving
home about seven o'clock, these
young folks found many more of
their friends awaiting them.
Together they enjoyed a play-party
until eleven o'clock when each one
reluctantly departed for his or her
bome.
The unique part about this good
time is the enjoyment it afforded

John Carter, a negro barber of Denmark,
about thirty-five years old, was
spirited away from Bamberg Friday
night following threats of a lynching.
Carter is charged with attempted
criminal assault upon a twelve
year old school girl yesterday afternoon.
