IT IS GHOST'S MOVE
NOW IN ANTIGONISI
Patient Scientist, With Electri

Awaits His Visit.
I
The mystery of the haunted hous<
of Antigonish, Neva Scotia, whicl

as claimed the attention of science
said a New York expert has beei
asked to solve the puzzle of tiie nov
famous ghost which has aroused th<
entire Canadian province.
Dr. Water Franklin Prirce, di
rector of "he American Institute fo:
Scientific Research, was appealed b]
the Halifax Herald, which i-ccentlj
sent a reporter to Antigonish Val
ley, only to have him slapped 01
the wrist by unseen, though report
ed as quite, substantial, hands. Dr
Prince has notified the Canadian pa
per he is ready to visit the north
cm province and run down the fa
ruous ghost of Antigonish, "even i
^the devil himself is at the botton
~ of it."
The "haunted house" as a goo<
portion of Canada has now come t<
know it, is the t!d homestead o:
Alexander McDonald, 100 miles a1
the crow flies, from Halifax. In th<
dead of winter, Mr. Mcdonald, i
seventy year old farmer, his wife
a year his junior, ana their fifteei
year old adopted daughter, fled th<
house in a state cf terror.
Unseen hands had loosed his horse:
in their stalls, braided the tails o:
his cattle, and kindled mystcriou:
fires of ordinarily not highly com
bustible materials in his home, th<
aged farmer declared. A provincia
detective, accompanied by a news
paper man, took up their resident
ir. the McDonald home for thre<
nights, fleeing it, finally, with ar
eerie tale of being slapped in th<
night by hands that did not seen
to be attached to anything in par
tfcular.
The mysterious happenings begai
six years ago when McDonald went
out one morning to ine oarn w ice*
his stock. He was bewildered to fine
cattle and horses loose in the stabh
when he remembered having tie<
them securely the night before.
Exercising particular care he fastened
them in their stall again am
returned to the house to tell hi)
wife of the strange occurrence

same startling manner. At length 1
- the old farmer visited the clergy- I
man and laid the matter before him.
Oddly enough, the strange happen- v
ings ceased as quickly as they had i
e begun. ! t
l On January 6, Mr. McDonald arose *
s at his usual hour and proceeded to *
i, the kitchen to start a fire in the *
l ccoking stove. He was surprised to 1'
7 see cinders on top of the stove and |
5 glancing upwards, saw a burned spot
en the boards of the ceiling near the
- entry of the stove pipe. He took '
r it for granted that the fire had been;
{ caused from the pipe and marveled
1 at their escape from a serious fire
- during the night.
i The next night tne family retired
- early. There had been no fire in.c
'. the kitchen stove after 4 o'clock in)
- the afternoon, the evening meal hav- 1 1
- ing been prepared in the dining room
- ir the main part of the house. !l
f Shortly after retiring Mrs. McDonald
i declared she smelled smoke and an 1
investigation revealed a fire in the
1 kitchen loft about the chimney which 8
) had been cold since 4 o'clock in the
f afternoon. The fire was extir.guish=

i On Sunday, January 8, Mr. Mc- J1
, Donald took every precaution to pre1
vent another outbreak of the fire *
s about the chimney, but agaiii Mrs. F
McDonald awoke and smelled smoke 11
3 after getting into bed. This time
f he found the upholstery of a rock- 8
5 ing chair nine feet from the kitchen r
- stove abkize. When he had thrown
i the chair out into the snow he turn1
ea to find a couch ablaze. McDonald
- did not go to bed again but there u
i were no more fires.
i Late Wednesday afternoon, Jan- ?
l uary 12, fires began breaking out *
i at intervals in different parts of the ?
i house and neighbors were summon- 11
- ed to help extinguish the blazes. ?
The McGillizray boys, Dan and Leo, *
i and Duncan McDonald, brother-in-law _
t of the McGfllivrays, spent a night
I ot terror in the house with the Mc1
Donalds. From 10:30 p. m. until 5
? a. m., 31 fires were discovered in e
1 various parts of the farmhouse. o
Michael McGillizray and John Ken- ?
- ny, neighbors who lived four miles ?
1 distant apd who had received the f
i midnight call for help, reached the ?
i McDonald farm at daylight. As they r
- approached, and according to McGii- 0
- lizray, about ten feet from the house, "
r they saw a bare arm and hand ex-1 .
tend through an upstairs window j_
