M. Harden, is very much gratified with the receipts of the Kingstree office. While it is admitted that this is the season when fertilizer is moved and naturally adds materially to the freight traffic in a community, in addition to the fertilizer coming into Kingstree there has been a considerable increase in the amount of general merchandise handled at this point The m'tw nf Pnlnmhin {a stacinc he:* second Palmufesta celebration and as was the cr.se last year there is to be a beauty show and the selection of 8 queen. This beauty show will be made up cf the best looking ladies in the state of South Carolina, one being selected from each of the fcxty-six counties. Now it is very evident to our mind that Williamsburg has just as pretty, if not prettier young ladies within her border j lines than any other county in the whole state, although it is true she hasn't so many to select from as some of the more thickly populated counties. This being the case, it is puzzling us to understand what kind of young men we have here. They seem to lack enthusiasm with regard to their charming sisters. They are not to be classed as gallants in the best sense of the term toward the sisters or daughters of their fellowmen. The County Record has been calling for the nomination of candidates for the honor of representing Williamsburg in tho Columbia beauty show for several weeks and so far not a nomination has been made, it is . up to the young men of the county to make the selection. In this matter they have ignored their "best girl" as if afraid she might slip awa/ ' from their admiring influences if permitted to participate in a big social i ^ function. The time for making a ' selection is short. Won't someone ' suggest a representative for the big j shovr from Williamsburg at once. Now that the farmers of this section are necessarily turning their attention to truck raising, \vc are going 1 to suggest in this connection the establishment of a first class cannery. This proposition, v/e know, has been ' put up to our people before, yes, before the boll weevil got here and at a time tfhen cotton and tobacco were ; more satisfactorily cultivated. But we have come face to face with vastly different conditions and as a way J out of a bad situation we are going , into the truck raising business. In the course of this business there are going to be slumps in the market and < great quantities of surplus trucks will i be thrown on our hands. With a < good cannery or two located in the region of the truck centers this sur- , plus stock may be hauled there and converted into canned vegetables and stored away until there is a profitable market for it. We would have our ( farmer friends and citizens in genera) think over this matter. V/e feel that it is necessary and also that there never was a more propitious time 101 organizing and establishing a few canneries in this section. We are not attempting to throw cold water on the truckraising industry. Far from it. But in connection with the extensive production of peas, beets, bean;: and sweet potatoes in this section, there should be a good cannery to take care of the surplus, that is the stock which an occasional dull market will throw on our hands. We believe a cannery would be a profitable investment at this time. It will not interfere with the profitable shipment of truck when the mar t kets are open and prices good, but when such conditions do not prevail it will be a mighty good tiling with which to take care of your product.
