AN EATING MAN. ? Good Appetites in Kingstree, But This j Fellow Takes the Cake. j ] Special dispatch from Philadelphia to one of New York's big daily news-1 papers tells this story of a man with an appetite. V.'e believed we had J some prize appetites in Kingstree until we read about this man, Lee: William Lee always boasted of the fact that he could eat as much as six men at on sitting. Last Sunday he confided this to Michael Yaffee and William Smith. They would not ' take Lee at his word and demanded a demonstration with $25 as the stakes in case, Lee won. If Lee lost , he was to pay for the meal. The I trio went to a restaurant where Lee, who is 6 feet, 4 inches tali and weighs ' 238 pounds, tucked a napkin under ( his chin and beckoned to the waiter. 1 He first ordered a 12 pound turkey with stuffing. This vanished within forty-five minutes. He picked the bones clean. Smith and Yaffee then i saw their cash going Lee-ward. Then in the words of John Paul Jones, Lee ; said: "I haven't started to eat." He then ate fifty-three oysters, two : pounds of pork chops, one dozen eggs. two slices of ham, a large beef stew, drank twelve cups of coffee, ate three loaves of bread, and during the mea! d' auk six bottles of soda water. Then he stopped and Smith and Yaffee passed over the stakes to the diner. Now this story should end by Lee , pushing back his chair, arising and i saying, "Well, I guess I'll go home J for supper now, but Lee didn't. Lee attempted to arise but found j ht was unable to do so. A look of i pain came over his face and he mut- ! tered: "Get a doctor; get a doctor." Yaffee telephoned for a physician who had Lee carried to his home suf- 1 fering from indigestion.
