TIME FOR COUNTY
FAIRS TO GET BUSY
f ANDREWS ALREADY WORKING (
ON PLANS FOR BIG SHOW
IN OCTOBER
One of the great drawbacks to the j
county fairs cf South Carolina is the i
neglect of the officials to start work- j'
timo TTio mottpi' li'ft '

open until the summer is well advanced.
Plans are then hurrieldly *
drawn up, a catalog thrown together i
and the matter left to lag along un- 1
til a few weeks before the show when *
all is rush and bustle at the last min- :
ute with the result that nine out of ]
every ten fairs in the state are never
k ready for opening day.
L This condition of affairs is being T
A overcome by the officials and boosters
B1& of the Tri-County Fair at Andrews. ,
says a correspondent in the Charles- j
H ton News and Courier. ]
gB The dates were fixed some months }
h ago and prizes annuonccd in .*xne of (
Br| the departments. This applies es- j
pecially to the agricultural depart- .
B ment. It is well that it should. One ^
eB oan not prepare a farm display on a
H|f week's notice. It requires the entire 1
growing season to work up a creditable
exibit. The Tri-County Fair is- (
sued a circular several weeks ago j
|p%ji announcing the liberal prizes which
WB will be offered at Andrews this year.
9 With ample notice it "is expected there j
H will be a good number of complete (
BH' farm exibits in place when the cur|9
tain rises this fall. The dates of the ,
9 Tri-County Fair are October 11 to 14
I inclusive. j

J The Twentieth* Century Mothers'
Club held its regular May meeting
3" Friday afternoon at the home oi: Mrs.
LeKoy 4.ee, Mesdames J. W. Swittenburg
and W. I. Nexsen, serving as
hostesses.^. '
c A motiOTi had been made at a prea
vious meeting that the new officers
I- of the club be elected in September
><1 instead of May, as the constitution
e_ calls for. After much discussion, it
was decided by ballot that the election
be held in compliance with the
original constitution. The following
ie officers were elected to serve a term
of one year,
j. President, Mrs. L. A. Van Keoren; y
;o vice president, Mr3. J. W. Switten)r
burg, recording secretary, Mrs. T. E.
j Arrowsmith, treasurer, Mrs. D. A.
te Montgomery.
y. The question as to whether or not
n the club shall become federated was
i_ discussed, but the decision was post
in poned until fall. ,
ts Mrs. B. A. Brown, who acted as
x. county chairman of the "Save the
h Baby" campaign sent a message to
d the club, expressing her sincere apy
preciation of the efforts ofj the memd
bers towards making the campaign
)_ such a success.
The program committee had arranged
for two Bible stories to be
told as they should be told to children.
Mrs. Harry Britton kindly consented
5. to tell the story,of "David and Goliath"
from the old testament, and
j1 Mrs. L. W. Gilland the story of the
"Loaves and the Fishes", from the
new testament.. Both of these were
ie i admirably told, and reflected much j
>l credit to the tellers.
" On acco.unt of the large membership
and the. fact that it'is still in10
creasing, k has become impossible
^ j for most of the memberf to entertain
'; eomfortably in, their hom * for lack
of room. Consequently, it has be!S
come necessary for some arrange,e
ment to be made by which' the meets*
ings may be held outside of the indi1
vidua! homes. Prof. J. W. gwittenberg
Superintendent of the High
ir | school has very generously offered the
use of the school auditorium for a
e meeting place, and the Domestic
e Science equipment to facilitate the
l~ serving of the usual refreshments.
^ i This offer is much appreciated, and
will be taken advantage of for the
,e fall and winter meetings. Many of
>. I ?
' j the members being absent from town
? during the summer months, these
' meetings will be held as heretofore.
l~ The semi-annual Fathers' meeting
'' will take the place of the regular
j' June meeting and will be held at the
ihome of Mr. and Mrs. T.. E. Arrow"
j smith on Main street. Mrs. Arrow1
smith has asked the foMougng come
mittee to assist her in entertaining:
'? Mesdames L. A. Van Kueren, A. C.
!f Swails, L. W. Gilland, W. K. Mclnl*
tosh, R. K. Wallace and J. D. Brib5
ton.
Mrs. B. T. Kelley was a welcome
I new member. It is earnestly hoped
!r that any mother who wishes to join
^ the club will feel free to do so, even
if not individually solicited. Any o4's
ficer or member is priviledged to re*'
cieve names of applicants, member0
ship duee being $1.00 annually.
I' At the close of the meeting a ris'
jng vote of thanks was tendered Mrs.
R. K. Wallace, as the club's first president,
in recognition of her sincere

work for its welfare.
