Daughters will meet at the home
of Mrs. J. D. Britton Friday (tomorrow)
afternoon at 5:00 o'clock. All
ex-students of Winthrop College are

Dr. Thornton Whaling yesterday
tendered his resignation as president
of the Columbia Theological Seminary.
Dr. Whaling is one of the most
distinguished theologians in the south.
He is well known to the Presbyterian
congregation of this place. His resignation
was accepted

They have gone to quite a bit
of trouble and expense, backed by the
town officials, and they wish to ask

for the children.

RECREATION.
The five-day program of the Red- [ <
path Chatauqua, opened in Kingstree '
last Saturday afternoon as previous-1;
ly advertised in the columns of The i
County Record. The opening Saturday
afternoon marked the second visit <
of Redpath artists to Kingstree, and j
while the financial end of their engagement
has not been easy sailing <
for the guarantors this year as it was <
last, owing to the great change
wrought by time in the financial con- ]
dition of the country in general, there 1
has been no lack of interest in each
performance on the part of those who 1
are attending. So far every number j
on the program has been of the highest
order, each and every performer ]
an artist of exceptional ability in his (
or her particular role.
The first of the series to come to ]
us was the Hippie concert Co. This <
company is composed of four real art- i

"Wizard of the Xylophone". In
his performances here he made clear
his entitlement to the distinction, and
most certainly he is not a novice in
handling the numerous other instruments
used by him in the course of ^
the concert. And if he is a wizard j
of the xylophone what is he with
respect to the trombone and Saxo- j
phone? The entire performances of c
the Hippie combination was of a high
degree of excellence. j
The lecture Saturday night by Mr. t
George L. McNutt, at once a very able j
and distinguished gentleman, was
pronounced to be worth the pi-ice of j
a season ticket. His subject was "The j
War on Hunger". He is bitterly ar- ^
rayed against fraud, sham and deception,
not because an Orlando, Florida j
dealer sold him a basket of what ap- ^
peared from the top layer to be staw- ,
herries of very fine quality and below
the surface proved to be anything 11
else, but on general principles and in''
whatever line 01' social or commercial ^
endeavor. His discourse was thorough ^
ly interesting, with humorous^garnishments
enough to make it pleasing. ^
Miss Irene Stolofsky was the sec- ^
ond day attraction with a delightful (
lecture in the evening by Mr. Harry
L. Fogleman, perhaps the most rapid
and at the same time distinct speaker j
on the lecture platform in this country.
He is a magnetic speaker and ^
for one hour and a quarter he held his j
audience spell-bound with a discussion ^
of the fundamentals of success in life ^
and in business. His subject was
"Success or Failure". Mr. Fogleman (
was suffering from the effects of a .
bad cold while here. He was accom- ,
panied by his wife. 1
Miss Stolofsky is a violinist, and ,
an artist in her line. Aside from her
ability as a musician of merit, she is
a charming young lady. ,
Tuesday, the third day, Dunbar's
White Hussars, a musical organiza- |
tion, composed of nine males, Mr. A1
Sweet being the director. Each of j
the members is a high-class artist ar.d ,
the evening program was replete with ,
versatility of the performers. In con- .
nection with the afternoon concert by j
the White Hussars, Mrs. Beulali Buck
very delightfully entertained the p.ud
ience with readings and impersona- 1
tions.

Sandy Bay School Closes.
The Sandy Bay school located in '
what is known as the McKenzie set- .
tlement closed its session last Friday ]
night with an interesting and highly
creditable program of exercises by the
pupils. The school was taught by
Mrs. Lillie McKenzie whose work, and
untiring efforts in its behalf Lave won
for her very favorable comment from
friends and patrons of the school. The
session just closed is pronounced a
success due in great measure to Mrs.
McKenzie's interest and her ability to
overcome suchr^obstacles as possibly
confronted her.
At the closing exercises Friday evening
the children showed that they
had been well and carefully trained.
The Rev. John WJ Davis was the
speaker for the occasion and he made
an excellent talk. Thn program as .

on the Xylophone.
