Magic Transformation Wrought by
Paint and Flowers and Shrubs
X
young farmer we knew got married
last year. He took his bride to a
i newly built little cottage which had
A been erected in an open space of
white, bleak, glaring >and and gravel.
We chanced to pass this house one
day with a friend. "What in the
^^^^vorld caused the fellow to build his
^^^?>use in a place like that!" was his
^^^^ciamation. "That farmer will nev
S^Hbe able to make his home look like
^^HHthing in such a location."
few days ago. we traveled the
^^K&ime road, but with a different com^^Bpanion.
On coming again to
HB)f this young farmer, the exclamation
^^Vthis time was. "What a pretty home!"
What had changed this unattractive
B^K place into one o'" beauty which caused
^ travelers to exclaim in admiration?
^HtThe answer was plain- -paint, flowers.
Hp shrubs and grass.
Br When the surrounding yard had
been plowed, graded, manured and
grass started, it showed that the loca^ r^tion
selected' by the young man. except
for the absence of trees, was not
I^Aso bad after all. The simple use of
HHflowers. shrubs, paint, grass and a litI
He time was all that was necessary to
H^Kurn an ugly picture into a beautiful
^^K>ne?and young trees with proper atB^Btention
and fertilizers will soon bolarge
ones.
The reason we do not have a won
K deriuiiy oeauuiui soum is unausc
m too many of our farmers and farm
women do not unuerstand the magic
of these simple beautifers, as this
H young farmer seems to have understood
it.?The Progressive Farmer.

Cuts Insurance Rate on Cotton.
Fire insurance companies recently
|fl[ announced that when a warehouseman
joins the United States warehouse
B system the fire insurance rate on
stored cotton is automatically reduced
| 25 per cent. This is tangible recognition
of the value of the Government
inspection.of warehouses and of other
> regulations of the United states ware|
house act.
' The purpose of the act, with regard
to cotton, is to standardize warehousing
and to provide for the issuance of
a standardized bonded-warehouse receipt
of unquestioned value and in1
tegrity, backed by a bond to the
United States Government The Gov*
eminent, authorities do not interfere
v ^ in any way with the warehouseman's
management and control, and require
^^^mly that the conditions of the act.

inspections made four times a y<
include a check of all canceled
ceipts against receipts issued and
the quantity of octton on hand. C
short monthly repoit relating to
ceipts and deliveries of cotton and '
amount of insurance carried, if a

The receipts of bonded warehou
under the warehouse act are among i
best possible collateral. Local bai
crs fully appreciate their value,
they can be more readily discoun
than the receipts of warehouses tl
are not bonded. Any building tl
will adequately protect cotton fr
the weather is acceptable as a wa
