McADOO OPPOSES CHANGE i

of the Volstead act to permit the saie s
of light wines and beers would ultimately
destroy the entire prohibition
amendment, William G. McAdoo, former
secretary of the treasury declared
in a statement made public to- 1
night. He said he believed a "modi- i
fying clause would make every lunch <

a saloon, encourage youth to drink i
and bring a curse upon the country <
greater than war." <
"Prohibition means prevention," he j
continued. "It does not mean license 1
in any form. To permit the sale of ^
light wines and beers is to open a (

once the crack is open the door is 1
wide. It is impossible to administer 1
a light wine and beer law in such a i
manner as to provent the gravest i
abuses. s
