yesterday for Fayetteville, N. C. to
join her husband.
Miss Elizabeth Kellam has returned
from a trip to New York, Boston,
Niagara Falls and Canada, and is
the guest of Mrs. A. C. Hinds. While
in New York Miss Kellam was a student
at Columbia University.

in Atlanta, Ga., under the Agricultural
Department of Georgia for a trip
through several states, going as far
as Chicago. This party is in charge
of Milton P. Jarnagin, animal husbandman
of Georgia State Agricultural
College, and left Atlanta Sun
m day. They go to Lexington, Ky.; La^
fayette, Ind.; Champaign, Bloomington
and Chicago, 111; Columbus, Ohio
where they will attend the Ohio State
fair. The party will return to Atlanta
on Sept. 5th.

Isaac Pendorgrass Murdered.
About dark Thursday evening a colored
man named Isaac P? ndergras was
shot to death, it is alleged by
Nelson Simmons, another colored man.
So far as the details of the affair
have been brought out. it seems that
Pendcrgrass was leaving his place.
, which is next to that of Mr. 1.. C.
Montgomery, just across Broad
Swamp, with a load of tobacco for the
! Kingstree market. He had gotten

! when he was assaulted on the public
highway and fatally shot by the nci
gro. Simmons it is alleged. The
wounded man was left lying in the road
j with his bowels protruding. A negro
| by the name of John P. Gamble came
i along and found Pendergrass and of fered
assistance. He claims that Pendergrass
told him that Simmons had
i shot him. Peforc Gamble could get:
' assistance the wounded man became
unconscious and died shortly afterwards.
Simmons is said to have disappeared.
Coroner Grown yesterday;
held Gamble under bond of $1,000 for
his appearance as a'material witness.
. Xo provocation for the shooting of
I Pendergrass was brought out at the
coroner's hearing.

Entitled to Federal Aid.
Last week the federal board for voational
education started a cleanup
campaign in South Carolina with a
view of settling every application for
vocational training which has not been
definitely acted upon. Tip state has
been divided into four zJhes. with a
squad of federal board agents assigned
to each zone. The purpose of
this intensive campaign in South Carolina
is to locate and interview personally
every disabled man in the
state, whose application for vocational
training is pending. Many applications
for vocational training cannoi
be acted upon on account of incomplete
or unsatisfactory medical examinations.
In order to secure complete
and accurate medical reports, a physician
is with each squad of federal
board agents for the purpose of giving
a physical examination, to every
disabled man whose medical records
are incomplete or unsatisfactory.
South Carolina has at present 155
disabled men who are taking courses
in vocational training from the federal
board. There are 72 disabled men
in South Carolina who have been approved
for vocational training, among
these are several from Williamsburg
county: Isaac Holmes, Seley W.
Cooper, Lawrence Swails, Albert L.
John A. Brown. Fleming Par
son. Julius G. Lifrage. William Kinder,
William Joyce, William T. Hemingway;
Isaac Hohues, Reese Williams.
