OUR TERRIBLE STREETS
Kingstreeans should wake up to the
necessity of improving our streets.
In their present condition they are far
worse than the county roads?so full
of bumps and holes that one riding
over them in an automobile or buggy
is almost thumped and jostled into a
state of insensibility. For the past
month and as they are at present, is
a positive disgrace to any town or
village where civilisation prevails.
As a matter of fact, the town government,
from its meagre income, is
not able to build streets and it has
come to a point where the individual
citizens will have to go down into
their pockets and rake out some of
he sheckles that have been accumulating
and moulding there and pay to
have made whatever improvements
we may reasonably expect.
If we cannot get paved streets it
does at least appear that we might
maintain smooth, decent thorofares
with a surface that will not drop into
impassible pits and holes when a
heavy rain falls. The County Record
will head a citizens' subscription
list with a contribution of $100 for
hotter streets.
The County Record is authentically
informed that it is the intention of
the few public-spirited business men
who purchased the hotel to form n
local stock company with sufficient
capital to convert the old plant into
an up-to-date hostelry. These gentlemen
have paid $1,000.00 and hold
an option on the property until October
1, next. In the interim it is
proposed to call upon every busines.man
and enterprise in town with a
view to getting a subscription to the
stock. They do not expect or care to
make a dollar out of the deal, they
merely want to see a hotel here?a
thing that Kingstree has long been,
and still is, in need of. If a stock
company is formed, the property Hill
be turned over by the purdiasers to
the stockholders at the original purchase
price, $25,550.00..
We understand that the North Carolina
tobacco market will not open until
September 7th. The Kingsfree
market is not due to close until September
20th, which will give ample
time for all the tobacco in this section
of the belt to be taken care of
by the warehousemen. It is not good
policy to rush too much tobacco on
the market, according to our notion, in
one day, or even in one week. Suppose
the fanners of the county were
to come trailing into Kingstree with
an hundred thousand dozen eggs.
There are no eggs in town to start

hen fruit, but the fellows who trailed
in late in the day would find the market
glutted, and his eggs would
scarcely command ten cents the dozen.
The egg buyers would be overstocked
and worn out handling them.
Of course, there's some difference in
eggs and leaf tobacco, but it's our notion
that when the tobacco buyer has
so much of the leaf rushed on him in
one day he becomes overstocked, gets
tired, worn out following the sale, and J
lapses into a mode of careless bidding,

owns the tobacco gets a price that
does not satisfy him. He tucks his
sales tag and delays the game getting
matters adjusted to his notion, because
he feels that his tobacco is just j
about as good as that of his neighbor,
< who sold on a clear market the day
before for twice the amount he was
offered on a stagnant market?the
buyers were tired, fagged nut, h.i'
enough for one day, but still trying
to be nice by making a bid.
At the moment it appears that the
citizens of Kingstree are to realize
the long-felt need of better and more
modern hotel accommodations for visitors
and the traveling public who en
ter her gates for the purpose of business
or pleasure. The matter is now
in the hands of a few public-spirited
business men of the town, and it rest?
with others of our citizens to determine
whether or not our dream of
better hotel facilities shall be realized.
What are we going to do? The opportunity
is at hand and prompt ac-1
tion is required; therefore, let's de- i
dde to do this one thing without
fail?give the town a creditable hotel.
This can only be done through the
unselfish cooperation of our business
and professional men. Nuf Said!

object; indeed, I think it is a necessity.
This campaign is of very great
importance, not only to the people of
the country, so far as the issues in\olved
are concerned, but it is of tremendous
moment to the f' f ire peac?
and happiness of the wond.
Managers of election at the various
precincts will please provide
boxes for this purpose.
